Cyclists "strongly advised" not to go on bike ride next Monday

Ok they've now U-turned on their advice (not the first organisation to do so after the inevitable backlash) but why on earth would British Cycling think this was a good idea?

"British Cycling strongly recommends that anybody out riding their bike on the day of the state funeral does so outside of the timings of the funeral service and associated processions, which will be confirmed later this week"

It's bonkers. We probably will watch the funeral as it's a bit of history, but we plan to go for a bike ride in the woods later that day, and get some DIY done. Maybe a dog walk.

Much I hope the queen would have been moved by people being affected, I'm fairly sure she wasn't a mopey type and wouldn't have expected everyone to be rending their garments (lycra or otherwise) for the whole day!

The whole Center Parcs thing has been a fascinating watch in terms of how a brand can shoot itself in the foot. I hope someone does a round-up of how businesses and brands have reacted at some point, because there seem to have been some questionable decisions from quite a few. But I reckon CPs will be front and centre (a few other companies are probably breathing sighs of relief that their own misjudgements have been put into the shade by the CP clusterfuck!)

pd339 · 14/09/2022 12:52

Pompous idiots who think they're more important than they are. Like most organisations!

pointythings · 14/09/2022 12:53

It's worse than the hysterical mourning when Diana died. Yes, let people pay their respects, but let's not go into a collective grief orgy.

TheHoundsOfHell · 14/09/2022 12:53

Let's have a day of Lockdown, why not?
We can reminisce as well being able to grieve in our own homes whilst watching the funeral.
The only exemption to Lockdown is for those actually attending the funeral.

MrsAvocet · 14/09/2022 12:54

Bonkers. If it's a nice day I will be going for a ride. The roads will probably be quiet so why not take advantage?I really don't think that the Queen or any of her family would care one iota what I'm doing on the day. I won't be riding down the Mall weaving in and out of the funeral procession for goodness sake!
Cancelling things out of respect has gone a bit nuts. Things in London where transport will be difficult or are close to the route- fine. Events which require police resources that are going to be diverted to the funeral- sensible and probably unavoidable. I even understand why our local harvest festival type thing that basically involves a village street party is off at the weekend. Things do tend to get a bit boisterous and I can see that could be deemed inappropriate by some of those living in the area.
But don't let your kids play football, don't go for a bike ride etc seems OTT. And, to my knowledge, the RF haven't even asked for these kind of things. Given that it's hardly an unexpected event, I am pretty sure that had the Queen wished for a lot of these things to happen she'd have asked for them. But she didn't. So I don't think it's disrespectful to get on with life.

As someone looking in from another country, this is all getting a bit nonsensical now. I read about the Centre Parcs debacle with a dropped jaw, and now this.

It seems as though you are being forced to mourn and grieve?

If you feel you wish to pay your respects and have a sombre day, it is very understandable, but what if you do not feel so strongly about the Queens passing?

I am finding things I am seeing here a bit bizarre in all honesty.

The BBC would like to believe we are all devastated apparently they have asked each and everyone of us 🙄

Notonyerwelly · 14/09/2022 12:57

Oh ffs what about people who have to cycle to work ?

Think the bolt is shot on that one.

MissAmbrosia · 14/09/2022 12:59

I saw on Twitter that Guinea Pig Awareness Week has been postponed out of respect! I think everyone has gone a bit mad.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/09/2022 13:01

Ridiculous. What a bloody over step. The cheek of them. Unless Good Housekeeping is strongly discouraging housework? ...

Bretonbear · 14/09/2022 13:03

LetMeSpeak · 14/09/2022 12:39

Im all for this funeral and paying respect but this is really getting out of hand now.

So your post on the other thread was sarcasm?

viques · 14/09/2022 13:04

All that Lycra! Very disrespectful.🙂

JemimaPiddleDick · 14/09/2022 13:04

The number of things that have been cancelled “out of respect” for Her Majesty is making me think “Lose your shit and cancel everything” is the new “Keep calm and carry on”

Guinea Pig Awareness Week is a bit mad in the first place though!

I wonder whether it's ok for me to cycle to work? Maybe I should wear black and cry or at least look sad as I pedal Hmm

viques · 14/09/2022 13:06

oh, and I have just booked my Covid booster online and they are still open on Monday.

Minesril · 14/09/2022 13:06

Ah I was wondering what to do with an eight year old and a two year old on Monday. The eight year old loves his bike and the two year old loves going on the back of mine. Bike ride it is!

Herejustforthisone · 14/09/2022 13:06

‘Mass hysterical grieving’ is right. I’m not going to stop doing anything for the Queen on Monday.

Lockheart · 14/09/2022 13:07

If you live near London it's probably sensible not to go onto public transport or the roads (car or bike) unless you absolutely have to, given the hordes that will descend. Or indeed if you live anywhere that will be broadcasting on a big screen.

I live in London and I will be staying in my house! I don't fancy tangling with the swarms of tourists.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 14/09/2022 13:10

British Cycling have some very strange ideas about life in general at the moment ( yes, Emily) .

Cheeseandwines · 14/09/2022 13:10

It's highly disrespectful to repeatedly rub lycra clad chubby thighs together when the Queen is being buried. I for one will look out for cyclists and if I see any on Monday they will be reported both to British Cycling and to Prince Charles himself. Respect.

Heath84 · 14/09/2022 13:11

Hollow whenever businesses and organisations comment on events like this purely for PR, but this backfired embarrassingly.

It's spreading like a virus!!!😂😂😂😂

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 14/09/2022 13:13

Gas Safety Week is also cancelled 🤷🏻‍♀️

Can't have people having safe gas appliances in their homes seeing as the Queen is dead and shit.

emmathedilemma · 14/09/2022 13:13

Because it will upset all the people who think we should be at home weeping gently into our hankies and glued to the TV was how I read the full notice.
To me it seems like a great time to get out for a ride if the roads are quiet!

@isthismylifenow I’m pleased to read the perspective of someone outside the UK. It’s beginning to feel a bit medieval and forced. I quire expect Charles and Camilla to be carried through the streets in sedan chairs.
