Cyclists "strongly advised" not to go on bike ride next Monday

Ok they've now U-turned on their advice (not the first organisation to do so after the inevitable backlash) but why on earth would British Cycling think this was a good idea?

"British Cycling strongly recommends that anybody out riding their bike on the day of the state funeral does so outside of the timings of the funeral service and associated processions, which will be confirmed later this week"

It's highly disrespectful to repeatedly rub lycra clad chubby thighs together when the Queen is being buried. I for one will look out for cyclists and if I see any on Monday they will be reported both to British Cycling and to Prince Charles himself. Respect.

That'll be King Charles to you @Cheeseandwines !

I saw on Twitter that Guinea Pig Awareness Week has been postponed out of respect! I think everyone has gone a bit mad.

I suppose this isn't a good week to be trying to get media coverage, so they might be using it as an excuse. Which actually would make more sense than some of the other more batshit stories we've had recently.

Alexandra2001 · 14/09/2022 13:16

@LetMeSpeak You were advising we all stay at home, be respectful, watch the funeral and go to the park afterwards (btw its shut) only yesterday?

Good to see the u-turn and that you can see this is all state/population control on steroids.

Absolutely shameful and will do great harm to the Monarchy.

Bubblemonkey · 14/09/2022 13:17

What a load of absolute shite.

orzoisorange · 14/09/2022 13:18

This is actually insane and I will now make a point of going for a nice long ride on Monday.

How dare "British Cycling" suggest what I should or should not do with my time?

Nowisthesummerofourdiscontent · 14/09/2022 13:19

Pensions Awareness Week cancelled too.

A STATEMENT FROM PENSION AWARENESS
Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we have decided to postpone our Pension Awareness live shows as a mark of respect. The events were due to begin next week, taking place from Monday 12th to Friday 16th September. We are rescheduling for Monday 31st October to Friday 4th November 2022.

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 14/09/2022 13:20

Good Lord, if anything could possibly persuade me to buy a bike, this would.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/09/2022 13:24

The fascinating thing is that all of these cancellations and edicts aren't coming from the government - they are self imposed rules or guidance/rules set by arbitrary groups as though everything has to be done on steroids. If we don't do it then we aren't respectful/not patriotic/want to kill people.

Queen dies: no cycling, no medical appointments, no having fun. All to clap outside, less the neighbours judge you.

Covid lock down: No sitting outside, no walking more than an hour, no picnics even if you are by yourself. All to clap outside less the neighbours judge you.

All these self imposed restrictions allow authoritarian governments to gain more control by normalising draconian actions.

She's going with the flow 😂

blobby10 · 14/09/2022 13:26

Well I live in the East Midlands and will definitely be going out on my bike early morning for 30 miles or so before getting home to watch the funeral on TV! No way I'm not taking advantage of not having to be in work for7.30am!!

WimbyAce · 14/09/2022 13:29

Our local country park is closed eg carpark and facilities but luckily is easy walking/cycling distance for us so may head over there while it's quiet. Young kids are not going to want to be sat indoors watching the funeral.

theunwashed · 14/09/2022 13:29

@isthismylifenow as someone in the country, I think it's fucking ridiculous.

<oils chain>

Butchyrestingface · 14/09/2022 13:30

Outside of clogging up London Town, I struggle to imagine the queen herself would have wanted everyone hermetically sealed to their armchairs for 24 hours on the 19th.

But sycophantic organisations gonna do what sycophantic organisations gonna do...

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 14/09/2022 13:32

Just when you think the government was the ones making batshit rules up
Stay at home but dont stay at home.
This is bonkers! Can I shower on monday or is it out of respect I walk around smelly? Jesus wept!

W0tnow · 14/09/2022 13:32

What was the centre parcs debacle?

museumum · 14/09/2022 13:34

It’s not “individuals don’t ride bikes” it’s clubs don’t organise a big bank holiday celebratory ride. It’s not a normal bank holiday. I’m not a royalist and won’t watch the funeral but even I know it’s inappropriate to have a “normal” bank holiday type day.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 14/09/2022 13:35

Taken slightly out of context. It was advice, not a rule or enforced in any way. It was a suggestion knowing what MAMIL's, especially, can be like. They're also not going to comment on the appropriateness of driving as they're British Cycling. It was also in an emailed newsletter from BC with other guidelines around BC events, races etc being held.

RIPWalter · 14/09/2022 13:37

I remember being 16 and messing about do jumps in the camping field at a downhill mountainbike race (in Devon I think) for the few hours that Diana's funeral was on, as they wouldn't allow us to race at that time.

I fully intend to take DD for a bike ride on Monday if the weather is nice. We are not Royalist and I'm not even sure if DD (4) knows who the Queen is let alone that she is dead.

It's sad that someone elses Mum, Nan, Greatgran has dies, but beyond that I am not remotely interested, and won't be told what I can and can't do in my free time.

LondonJax · 14/09/2022 13:38

@W0tnow Centreparcs were, basically, asking people to leave their cabins for 24 hours on Monday as the sites were closing 'as a mark of respect'. They've had so much flak they've rescinded it.

I think the problem is that we've not had a monarch die for 70 years. I don't think most businesses are sure what they should do 'as a mark of respect' but I'm pretty sure HM wouldn't have worried if the odd bike was on the road or if a holiday park stayed open!

Stravaig · 14/09/2022 13:38

I'm just waiting for the decree that we are all to stay indoors and sit in front of our televisons for the duration of the funeral service. Anyone found outdoors during the mandatory mourning curfew will be arrested, stripped of citizenship and deported.

Greensleeves · 14/09/2022 13:40

Christ almighty, it's bad enough that the BBC has turned into MournHub and MN is full of screaming vampires. Now we can't even go for a bike ride? Bollocks.

UniversalAunt · 14/09/2022 13:43

Eh?
In fear that someone might be offended by a single cyclist?
Cyclists three riding abreast on Her Highway (well, His Highway)?

I intend to observe the late Queen’s funeral in some way, but if other people do not do so & go about their usual business, or demonstrate without impeding the funeral, so be it.

@isthismylifenow I’m pleased to read the perspective of someone outside the UK. It’s beginning to feel a bit medieval and forced. I quire expect Charles and Camilla to be carried through the streets in sedan chairs.

@Maytodecember Like Kate and William !! So much wrong with this photo !!

I read in the paper today that Morrisons have turned down the volume of the beeps at the tills, as a mark of respect!

I admired the Queen, and I’m actually sadder than I thought I would be - but so much of what is being done/advised/prescribed in the name of national mourning seems completely over the top, even to me. But Morrisons’ muffled beeps win performative mourning, imo!
