Name changed as potentially identifying, but been here forever.

Many years ago (deliberately being vague but 10+ years ago) my dh came home from work and said he has a massive secret to tell me, that I couldn't tell another soul.....that his company was designing and building the Queen's Hearse. The business is just a small family-run firm based in the North, and whilst they had been making Jaguar hearses for years this was totally unexpected.
The whole team worked really hard on it and it was built with the utmost secrecy and respect, kept hidden until now - very few people even knew it existed (it's been hard sometimes not sharing with family).

I'm having mixed emotions since we saw it on tv last night - as I want to shout from the rooftops how proud I am of DH and the team but so far this is the only place I've shared as I don't want to look crass in what is a very sad time for our country.

So AIBU to finally share this secret and whilst it is very sad, also be very honoured to be part of our Queen's final journey.

to finally share this secret!

Maybe but at least I'm not a po-faced wanker who can't at least be pleased for someone who's just proud of her husband Confused

I feel we could be friends @InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream
Well said

Just imagine, designing your very own hearse.

Yes it’s an odd thought isn’t it? Makes me wonder if I should be thinking about what I’d like. 😄

I wrote grisly because I meant grisly. Why would I use a word that I didn't mean. And why to people want to gawp at a coffin anyhow. It's just weird.

Do you lack emotional intelligence and an understanding that not everyone is like you on all matters or just this one?

Can you really not grasp that the millions of people are interested in this historic event? Whether you agree with the monarchy or not you must be able to comprehend that this is a huge event

Bloody waste of our money. I personally would be ashamed.
Old ladies the queen's age will die of cold & hunger this winter & our money spunked on a new hearse🤮

🙄

Exactly @IcedOatLatte some people have 0 compassion and emotional intelligence, and take these threads as an opportunity to attack people who are sad about the Queen dying. They're pathetic.

If you read my previous post I took time out to say my personal opinion/ seems to me. So possibly read before you write another time.

Tubs11 · 14/09/2022 11:54

Very classy, like the Queen. Bet all those involved in it's manufacturing were glad when it arrived at the Palace

PomPomSugar · 14/09/2022 11:58

I think you need to be very careful here OP. Your husbands company may have signed an NDA.

Some people have nothing better to do than surf Mumsnet looking for things to be offended about. Would love the ability to hide certain posters, would make this a much nicer place.

Dogscanteatonions · 14/09/2022 11:59

It may well be in the public domain but it's one thing for op''s husband's company saying it's ok to finally tell friends and family and quite another to go posting on an internet forum about it. I can't help thinking the firm may not be best impressed and that this post might have been better saved for a few weeks time at least

EbbyEbs · 14/09/2022 09:54

There are some bitter fuckers on here 😂

well done to your DH op ☺️

You couldn't have put it better @EbbyEbs
MN has become a forum with so many posters who lack empathy.
Do they get a kick out of hurting others?

Surprising given the focus and concerns about mental health, bullying etc.

I am ready to check out completely.

Tubs11 · 14/09/2022 12:03

@goodbyestranger for both my mother's and brothers funerals their car also had the lights on, it's not unusual and immensely comforting to the immediate family

It's in the news. OP's DH's company is named, so you don't need to worry.

Thank you @maranella - yes it was made especially for this occasion and the Queen helped to design it. I believe the Mercedes was used in Scotland to honour the funeral director that was used as the car was one of their fleet - whereas in London, Leverton's is the royal funeral director and runs Jaguars anyway.

@Meltingsocks I don't know how or if the hearse will be used in the future - it might go on display somewhere perhaps or will be reused for future state funerals? I'm just guessing though as no idea!

Thank you @123becauseicouldntthinkofone yes, I agree about not shouting about it and waiting, to be honest will probably never shout or share about it due to respect.

Thank you all for allowing me to share the news here.

You're absolutely right to be proud, I was watching her arriving at BP last night and they mentioned the Queen had been involved in the build. If Philip could help with his Land-rover why not the same for the Queen.

Stravaig · 14/09/2022 12:05

OP, your appreciation of traditional craftsmanship and pride in your husband is lovely to see.

MarsupiIami · 14/09/2022 12:06

It's a very nice hearse and your husband did a great job, but I find this a really odd flex.

kittensinthekitchen · 14/09/2022 12:07

I voted YABU based on the OP, then read the rest of the OPs comments and have changed my mind.

I had no idea that hearses (and limousines) were converted from standard cars and not produced intact. That's actually really interesting.

pollykitty · 14/09/2022 12:08

That is so interesting, I was genuinely discussing the hearse with my husband when we were watching the coverage and remarking on it. Thanks for sharing how it was done. All the remarks on here about waste and reusing it are a bit woke imo. I suppose they're going around to all of the posts on social media about the Queen's death and commenting on the environmental waste and so on.

'Flowers left outside Balmoral and BuckyPal?' Bit wasteful. Hope they are going to be gathered and made into compost and trees replanted. 'State funeral for a much-loved Quuen?' Seems totally bizarre. So much costs for a person who's passed away. Hope the leaders of other nations are taking trains and sailboats to attend.'

CheshireCat1 · 14/09/2022 12:09

I thought that St. George slaying the dragon on the bonnet was a nice touch, I believe the late Queen designed it herself.

SecondsAreTheBest · 14/09/2022 12:10

How lovely Op. It must feel very special. I'm not a royalist but I found your post really touching. Thanks for sharing. (And ignore the grumpycorns!!)

goodbyestranger · 14/09/2022 12:11

Tubs11 I've never come across it ever before so was surprised; thought it just a rf thing. My family have never been illuminated and I'd have had the horrors if they had been. I found it incredibly upsetting to look at my mother's coffin, never mind having it illuminated to see better.

goodbyestranger · 14/09/2022 12:12

But clearly people react very differently to the same thing, as I said above.

MacaroniBaloney · 14/09/2022 12:12

It did cross my mind watching it on tv last night what a great design it was as the windows felt really big and had a great curve to them. I did admire it! Well done to your DP. Great craftmanship.

FeatherBlower · 14/09/2022 12:14

BigCheeseSandwich · 14/09/2022 11:07

"Expect to read your post in the Daily Mail tomorrow."

Headline: Woman proud of husband's part in Queen's hearse design

Wow, that'll shift papers!! What a cracking read that will be 😆

This is exactly what I was thinking. They’ll report on the hearse itself, they already have done, but they aren’t going to waste time scrambling up a whole piece on the fact that a poster on Mumsnet has said her husband helped to build it! And so what if they do? The hearse has been revealed and no one knows who the OP or her DH is.
Silly thing to get worked up about.

I found it interesting OP, thanks for sharing.
