to finally share this secret!

Name changed as potentially identifying, but been here forever.

Many years ago (deliberately being vague but 10+ years ago) my dh came home from work and said he has a massive secret to tell me, that I couldn't tell another soul.....that his company was designing and building the Queen's Hearse. The business is just a small family-run firm based in the North, and whilst they had been making Jaguar hearses for years this was totally unexpected.
The whole team worked really hard on it and it was built with the utmost secrecy and respect, kept hidden until now - very few people even knew it existed (it's been hard sometimes not sharing with family).

I'm having mixed emotions since we saw it on tv last night - as I want to shout from the rooftops how proud I am of DH and the team but so far this is the only place I've shared as I don't want to look crass in what is a very sad time for our country.

So AIBU to finally share this secret and whilst it is very sad, also be very honoured to be part of our Queen's final journey.

to finally share this secret!

I totally agree. Especially with the millions they spend on helicopters, press scandals, etc. But there's probably a standard/ protocol they need to keep up with.

The OP"s first post: I want to shout from the rooftops how proud I am of DH and the team but so far this is the only place I've shared as I don't want to look crass in what is a very sad time for our country

So that. It seems odd to share something very identifiable (to the company) on a public forum when you have already doubted whether it's crass or not to tell anyone yet.

Op also said kept hidden until now. So it was clear that secrecy was no longer a problem.

The worry about seeming crass was if she shouted it from the rooftops in RL.

So I still can’t see why you thought the press picking up on this thread would be an issue. Or why they would pick up on it at all.

OP, It’s fabulous craftsmanship and you have every right to be as proud of your husband (and his colleagues) as you are.

There’s a time & a place for this sort of thing & it’s not now; wait until after the funeral & then blow your old man’s trumpet; to all & sundry; right now it’s best to show some rest to the dear lady who’s served our country so well

Bore off

God, talk about pissing on OPs chips. Your husband must be very proud to see his craftmanship driving through.

But it is just a car. Did dh personally build it? Or was it a team of mechanics etc from his company? I can see the pride but not to this degree. Maybe it being a secret has exaggerated your feelings?

Did you need to comment.

Well it’s not just words it’s a valid observation even if you don’t agree.

Ah, thanks for sharing. A lovely story, and it's fabulous.

As for the griping you're getting, wonder what makes some people so miserable they have to rain on everyone else's parade about everything . 😢

Our turnover of monarchs is pretty low, so I expect we can afford a decent hearse once every 70 years. 🙄 Especially as the whole world is watching.

The OP posted inviting comments. Therefore all feedback is valid. If OP just wanted admiration they are on the wrong site

KosherDill · 17/09/2022 02:28

Well done to your DH! It's a magnificent vehicle.

Ignore the misery dicks.

But why do people feel the need? Op posted about something her DH was proud of, in real life would people interject someone saying that with well its pretty shit? It's not a thread asking for advice or info, so of course whilst anyone can have an opinion it seems a bit nasty and pointless to make the effort to type it out.

Because people are unhappy and so feel the need to try and make others unhappy too. It’s pretty sad really

Taillighttoobright · 17/09/2022 07:27

This has made my day. The bitter few on here don’t seem to have any empathy, OP - ignore them. Companies are teams, and the team your DH belonged to was a) chosen and b) did a magnificent job - no wonder you are so proud.
We all trash men who don’t contribute to their family’s world - can’t we enjoy sharing our happiness for OP and her husband and the fact they shared this lovely little secret?

Maytodecember · 14/09/2022 13:09

No you’re not the only one.
Never occurred to me there’d have to be a one-off hearse.
But great that it’s been built in Britain by British craftspeople/ engineers. Pity they couldn’t have made it electric to reduce pollution?

I agree @BigHoots an utter waste 🙄

Teax20 · 17/09/2022 10:17

Well done OPs husband 👏
I only know this company because of being a funeral arranger. Even some people in our industry don't realise all hearses are hand built car manufacturers don't make them.

They have a Woman MD as well!!!

Axcis · 19/09/2022 13:47

You're on telly again. It really is a beautiful car. We'll done your husband.

EbbyEbs · 19/09/2022 13:50

Is this the same car? It looks different

CinnamonJellyBeans · 19/09/2022 14:26

Even the newsreaders are saying how open and visible the hearse is, so the Queen can continue to connect with people.

Nice job from your DH.

(I also want to know if it's refrigerated). Is it really made from a standard jag? It's very long; you'd have to re-do the chassis? I was also wondering about the gearbox: DH said it's automatic, is that it?

usernamealreadytaken · 19/09/2022 19:34

It's a wonderful privilege, and you're quite rightly proud of all that hard work. You might be local to us, as I read about a local engineering firm which were involved in the trimming (but not the actual build). A very emotional day today, and I'm sure you were extra proud x

Arewerelated · 19/09/2022 19:42

I bet you're so proud OP. It looked beautiful.
I had my moment of pride today thinking of my own great grandad, who was a chef for the Queen while she was still just princess, shortly after ww2. Glad the day went so smoothly for them all
