To worry that things will kick off in London this week?

sunnydaytoday0 · 14/09/2022 01:27

By that I mean civil unrest? I certainly hope not but is it a worry given the simmering tension around things like peaceful protesters being warned they'd be arrested, people being reminded they're living in an incredibly unequal society during a cost of living crisis, the anger surrounding the police shooting of an unarmed man recently etc.

I image police officers are being drafted in from all over the country in near record numbers, but is anyone else worried a few heavy handed arrests over the next few days could actually tip the balance into serious disorder?

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 14/09/2022 07:55

No. We're pretty good at managing these kind of things from a security aspect

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 14/09/2022 07:56

No. The Royal pageantry and mourning is distracting people from the financial crisis.

In a couple of weeks or months time when the realise the announcements from Liz Truss last Thursday morning mean they still can’t afford to heat or eat, then it will kick off.

the other risks are there but they always are.

MN predicting civil unrest again 🙄

some just can’t wait

of course not anyone who even tries will be outnumbered hugely

irs a security nightmare but not because a few mc hand wringers want to air their views and stir up the wc to riot for them

Bloody pesky hand wringers feeling hard done by because their lives are absolutely shit, getting worse and no one cares as long as they stay in their place.

Jijithecat · 14/09/2022 07:58

No, the weather is crap for a start.

TheNoonBell · 14/09/2022 08:00

I would be far more worried about what happens if the electricity grid goes down in London this winter.

The looting will be off the scale after 4 days without power.

metro.co.uk/2022/08/10/uk-could-face-blackouts-this-winter-under-emergency-energy-plan-17157990/

"Britain is being warned to brace for almost a week of home blackouts this winter amid the nation’s spiralling energy crisis.

Four days of residential power cuts are included in a government plan to cope with a worst-case electric and gas supply scenario, it was revealed today."

PAFMO · 14/09/2022 07:53

There are a lot of these posters cropping up.
See also "oooh Charles looks a bit like he might have a heart attack, I do hope he's OK" etc.
They're loving every second of planting the seeds.

I used to think a lot of them were 'tester' posts from UK political spads from the different parties, testing the waters with various scenario and ideas. But I imagine a few are foreign bots too. What with them and the lazy journalists inventing stoies about 'a woman who took to Mumsnet today ...' I'm not sure there are many genuine threads on here some days.

Wouldloveanother · 14/09/2022 08:01

In the voice of Mr Garrison ‘For crying out loud Eric’

Give it a rest. There really are some posters who want society to fall apart it seems.

Are you actually worried, OP? Or do you hope things will kick off in London?

I think it's the latter. Simple answer - no. People on here are always banging on about civil unrest.

Ariela · 14/09/2022 08:03

BooseysMom · 14/09/2022 02:31

I do wonder if we might have unrest this winter though. Normally, hot summer days tend to be the catalyst, but this winter the problem is that for many people, the inside of their homes will be as cold as the outside

Exactly. I think Extinction Rebellion might have something to say about the thousands turning up to pay their respects, gridlocking London, etc, or the size of the plane transporting a handful of people and a coffin, or the planes going back and forth generally making journeys that could have been planned in a more environmentally conscious way. I'm not a royalist BTW! I am saddened of course by the Queens death but it's like noone cares any more about the planet and our climate.

I imagine Extinction Rebellion will thoroughly approve of King Charles and hope for his influence to extend with respect to the environment and climate change, even though he is supposed as monarch to be neutral.

That guy in Edinburgh who heckled Andrew has now been charged (breach of the peace) according to Sky. He shouted, 'you sick old man' before being tackled to the ground by what looks like undercover police officers. His hands were visible at all times around his mouth.

The court case will be more terrible optics the royals if this man pleads not guilty and mounts a spirited defence. It's looking bad enough already that there's a clamp down on the right to protest and express dissenting views.

I think it's getting people's backs up.

Ugh.

Arrested pretty violently for speaking the truth.

The subjects must not speak of such things.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 14/09/2022 08:04

Yes, I can imagine the procurator fiscal looking at the file, shaking his or her head in despair, and quietly dropping it in the bin.
Unless however they also loathe Andrew and think, 'oh wait a minute, juicy case here to embarrass the sick old man ...'

Dastardly!

Rapidtango · 14/09/2022 08:11

YouAreEntitledToMyOpinion agree, it's rife at the moment - new posters (or fairly new) with a couple of posts about weaning or what should I wear to this wedding then suddenly a post about riots, terrorism, the royal family should be overthrown, Meghan Markle is an alien etc, cue frothing from all sides, couple more plopping posts from OP to stir things up a bit more, then disappear. There are posts which appear to have an agenda.

The country is in an odd place at the moment and a bit of mischief from an external troublemaker just adds to the polarisation. And of course it's not just on MN.

XingMing · 14/09/2022 08:17

There are some real doom mongers enjoying their nightmares here today!

Limesaregreen · 14/09/2022 08:19

I’m not in London but I’ve had a feeling of civil unrest coming but think it’s more likely to happen in the aftermath of the funeral, when the normal, shitty news stories appear reminding us of how crap life is for the poorest and not so poor.

I’ve no actual beef about the Queen, but it’s the sycophants. There is one in particular on the BBC almost falling over himself with grief and deference it makes me puke.

The thing that struck me about this whole thing was how slick the organisation is. The plans were in place for years and they have been executed perfectly no doubt down to rehearsals and meticulous planning and trouble shooting. Contrast that to the Operation Cygnus where the one dry run to see how the UK would cope in a pandemic showed up a lot of shortcomings which were then ignored and the report was buried. Yeah the machinery can work perfectly for one, rich monarch but for the masses? Nah, f8ck them, not worth the bother.

Remember that when they try to gaslight us saying we are disrespectful to the monarchy once the protests start

Countdown2023 · 14/09/2022 08:19

The joy of MN is that it attracts all sorts.

  • consider source
  • are there any supporting sources?
  • check biases
  • is it a joke? Is it credible?
  • read beyond as often headlines can be outrageous in an effort to get clicks

Agreed, every few weeks there's someone asking on here if there's going to be civil unrest. It's been going on for years it seems over one thing or another particularly during covid. Civil unrest just means that buildings get damaged, there's arson, looting and people can get hurt - I have no idea why people are so keen for it.

In the London riots in 2011 5 people died, many more were injured, random people minding their own buisiness were attacked, £200 million pounds worth of property was damaged, buses and trains were destroyed and the local economy was badly affected - well that all sounds really helpful to people and just what we need doesn't it. The Financial Times reported that an analysis showed that 48,000 local businesses – shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs – had suffered financial losses as a result of the looting and rioting in English streets.

BMW6 · 14/09/2022 08:22

Russian bots are really busy on these threads lately.

Trying to whip up shit here cos the Ukraine invasion is an absolute clusterfuck 🙄

LickyFur · 14/09/2022 08:26

Some mumsnetters are very keen on those mythical civil unrests 😂👀😂

peridito · 14/09/2022 08:27

The parents who can't afford to feed their children unless bad budgeters are unlikely to be the ones funding anything. In fact they probably take out more than they put in.

Wow !

Umbrelleh · 14/09/2022 08:28

No, I do think after her funeral once things have settled though the mood will probably quickly change.

Also message, after message from people who are allegedly cross and confused about the upcoming bank holiday. I mean, how many genuinely clueless threads on 'will schools close on BH, why will the GP close, is Superdrug closing because of my important vaccine' can there be?
