To worry that things will kick off in London this week?

sunnydaytoday0 · 14/09/2022 01:27

By that I mean civil unrest? I certainly hope not but is it a worry given the simmering tension around things like peaceful protesters being warned they'd be arrested, people being reminded they're living in an incredibly unequal society during a cost of living crisis, the anger surrounding the police shooting of an unarmed man recently etc.

I image police officers are being drafted in from all over the country in near record numbers, but is anyone else worried a few heavy handed arrests over the next few days could actually tip the balance into serious disorder?

No, not this week. I suspect there WILL be trouble of sorts when winter really kicks in and it's very cold, dark and people are struggling to afford the heating and food.

No-one can really predict what will happen though, so we just have to go on and do the best we can. The thoughts of terrorism or other troubles have never deterred me from going to London or anything. I'm sure it will be OK.

They really do. A real competitive sense of doom and misery which feels like they enjoy somehow

Freckles20 - The protester in Scotland wasn't arrested violently, stop making things up. It was members of the public who were there to pay their respects who dealt with the situation. He was then helped up by a policeman and quickly taken away, which was the right thing to do.

I was assuming (stupidly) that the poster who said Andrew was tackled to the ground by security was correct.

I was mistaken to take this piece of info at face value.

Having said that google suggests that is what happened so maybe it is accurate 🤷🏻‍♀️ .

Legrandsophie · 14/09/2022 09:30

Republicans seem to think they are more well supported than they actually are.

What you’ve said comes across as a bit of a threat really- I feel marginalised for ideological reasons so therefore am free to start violent action.

I’m going to say now that it won’t work and if anyone with Republican leanings does anything remotely violent in the next week then it will turn the vast majority of the country against them and it will be the end of the Republican cause for decades. Just worth thinking about. King Charles currently has a 65% approval rating. Feel free to push it higher by doing something stupid and unnecessary.

I’m also a bit tired of online posters taking about ‘the people’ rising up. My family are almost all traditional working class and are all monarchists. The only people I know IRL who are rampant anti-monarchists are extremely well off and very unlikely to do anything about it except moan.

Iguanainanigloo · 14/09/2022 09:30

I feel the highest risk is more likely to be from an act of terrorism. I really really hope nothing happens, but the large swarms of crowds around the palace etc unnerves me.

Dotjones · 14/09/2022 09:30

There won't be riots. I can't believe that the majority of people who are going to London (that wouldn't be going anyway) are doing so for anything other than they want to pay their respects.

There are two big risks for unplanned disruption though. There is an increased risk of a terrorist attack, to be honest I'd be astonished if there aren't numerous plots because an attack would be hugely symobolic, there are extra crowds everywhere who won't be prepared for an attack and there will be lots of political figures attending. Hopefully nothing happens.

Second, idiots like XR or Insulate Britain will have no qualms about flying down to London to cause trouble. Glueing themselves to the road to block the funeral procession, that type of nonsense. I don't see the police being able to prevent this from happening to some degree because their main focus will be on preventing a terrorist attack. They won't be looking for glue and placards so much as for knives and bombs.

Luminousnose · 14/09/2022 09:35

The thing that struck me about this whole thing was how slick the organisation is. The plans were in place for years and they have been executed perfectly no doubt down to rehearsals and meticulous planning and trouble shooting. Contrast that to the Operation Cygnus where the one dry run to see how the UK would cope in a pandemic showed up a lot of shortcomings which were then ignored and the report was buried. Yeah the machinery can work perfectly for one, rich monarch but for the masses? Nah, f8ck them, not worth the bother.

Operation Cygnus wasn’t organised by ‘The Palace’. They’d probably have done a better job of it. (I’m ambivalent about the Monarchy, but my god, they’re good at this stuff.)

TheOtherWoman2 · 14/09/2022 09:36

Most of those who are angry, frustrated anti monarchy are students who let’s be honest aren’t going to pose any threat unless you could marching around whining with their posters as dangerous

Cailleachian · 14/09/2022 03:54

Yup. Powder keg.

The death has brought up so much stuff, sectarianism, irish history, colonial history; the country is deeply divided economically, politically, geographically, there is genuine poverty and despair.

While Lizzie might have commandeered a level of "national treasure" status, Charles and his suitcases of money and holidays with Savile, Andrew and his arms dealing and abuse of young women not to mention the ongoing obvious hate campaign against Markle doesnt convey the required dignitas.

The wealth transfer that is going on here is obscene. Billions of tax-free money being passed around, billions more in influence of all kinds, power hard and soft.

We have a weak Prime Minister, a weak parliament, a weak opposition, a judicary that has been neutered, a press that has been bought and a civil service hollowed out from the inside. Billions are being borrowed by the state, risking hyperinflation and the collapse of the pound.

We are really not in a good way, and people know it.

I was in Edinburgh & attended St Giles to see the Queen's coffin.
a LOT of mostly unarmed Police in crowd but snipers on roofs all around
airport style security for the queue but not faultless - I am disabled & was 'waived through' (nice for me but I could have been some loon trying to make a name for myself / my cause even if I didn't have a problem with the royal family)

I don't think Charles will enjoy the same support that his mother did.
once the 'party is over' (the death of one old lady has wiped even the huge progress Ukraine is making against Russia off hte news, as well as the young man recently shot by police in London) then its going to be an unsettled winter.

This. Interesting that the OP hasn’t been around for long …

L1ttledrummergirl · 14/09/2022 09:43

If someone walked into a church in the middle of a service and shouted that it was wrong, or a mosque during prayers would that be acceptable?
Would it be acceptable to work into Anfield in an Everton shirt and start shouting that the captain was shot?

Why should it be acceptable for someone to walk into a royalist crowd at a time of bereavement and start shouting about one of the Royals?

There is freedom of speech but with the right to freedom of speech comes the responsibility to use it wisely.
What would have happened to the man if the police hadn't stepped in?

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 14/09/2022 09:45

Personally i would be more concerned with acts of terrorism rather than civil unrest

The day before HMQ died there were two consecutive items on the news.

One was about trying to expand school meals to all primary children because they expect children to arrive at school both cold and hungry. That was followed by the then, second, third and fourth in line to the throne starting school at an estimate of £42 000 a year.

I can't have been the only one thinking that the parents who cannot afford to feed their children are paying for royal children to get an education they cannot dream of giving their own children.

This. It's incomprehensible.

herecomesthsun · 14/09/2022 09:45

I think you will find that there is a rhetoric of dismissal which includes words like

  • whining
  • whinging
  • screaming
  • slavering
  • histrionic
  • hysterical
etc

Usually coming from posters to the right of Attila the Hun who want to stop any discussion or opinion that they don't approve of.

There might be some problems so we'll stick at home, though we are a bit interested in the history, is a sort of middle ground for me.

LakieLady · 14/09/2022 09:45

Given the speed at which the police deal with anyone who so much as holds up a blank piece of paper near a procession, I think it unlikely, especially with large numbers of police deployed to the Met from other forces. A "lone actor" terrorist is probably more of a risk, tbh.

But given the heavy-handed way that peaceful protesters have been dealt with, coupled with very real concerns about the erosion of rights in the Policing, Crime etc bill that is going through parliament, I think there may well be significant protests in the months to come.

Maybe not till the spring though, when the weather is better.

Wrong! I’ve voted Labour all my life. As have all my monarchist family.

Try not falling back in social media stereotypes and maybe talk to some people in real life.

I love living in a country where a bit of rain puts rioters off, even if life does sometimes seem shitty enough to riot

Okay, dismissive rhetoric that sometimes comes from foolish Labour supporters and all then

How very British (though you might think we were inured to the rain).

Given the way the last few years have gone, and that this year has been spectacularly shit on a personal level and externally everything seems very unstable, nothing would surprise me…..

This - we are living in the Dark Timeline now, anything is possible.

Yestrday I was advised by NHS online to join Mumsnet in order to help with my mental health. This thread has given me so much to feel better about. 🙄😆

I admire your tenacity. You’ve had your arse handed to you on numerous threads now. And serially shown that you have no idea what you are talking about but you keep coming back for more.

Almost like this was your full time job 🤷🏻‍♀️
