To worry that things will kick off in London this week?

By that I mean civil unrest? I certainly hope not but is it a worry given the simmering tension around things like peaceful protesters being warned they'd be arrested, people being reminded they're living in an incredibly unequal society during a cost of living crisis, the anger surrounding the police shooting of an unarmed man recently etc.

I image police officers are being drafted in from all over the country in near record numbers, but is anyone else worried a few heavy handed arrests over the next few days could actually tip the balance into serious disorder?

I don’t know what people think London is sometimes. It’s pretty much like the rest of England - at least other cities and big towns - in terms of likelihood of “something kicking off” or there being a terrorist incident.

Protests tend to encourage poor behaviour. It's certainly not the week for it.

Well perhaps you might take your exemplary behaviour off this thread?

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/09/2022 15:30

Along with other pp, I'm half expecting some XR fuckwittery.

Thread policing of @Phos?
I thought you'd be against that type of thing?

JamSandle · 14/09/2022 15:43

I wouldn't be surprised as tension seems quite high amongst friends and colleagues.

I'll be avoiding news, social media other than here and London for a little bit. My nervous system doesn't want any more stress.

Mingling with the commoners is generally discouraged. 😉

It's where the queen's funeral will be. It has 9 million inhabitants. It will have visiting dignitaries from around the world. It's not a village outside Liverpool.

The wealth disparity in London is immense. Within the region of Canary Wharf (home of the biggest banks), you have blocks of apartments with concierge service juxtaposed beside blocks of the poorest tenants.

London is not England. London is a melting pot.
If you can imagine living in a caravan in the Lake District next to a massive detached house and the inhabitants of that massive house object to your mere existence as you are spoiling the view? That's London.

imissedabit · 14/09/2022 15:58

And I suspect that Londoners will explode soon. Policing is a massively divisive issue but I would not be surprised if a tiny straw broke the camel's back.

You sound like you’re rubbing your hands with glee at the prospect.

zingally · 14/09/2022 16:42

I had a similar thought yesterday... I was watching as the hearse drove through London to Buckingham Palace. And until they were right at the gates of B. Palace, I did think, "there's absolutely nothing to stop some mad/desperate person throwing themself under the wheels of that thing..."

I honestly REALLY hope and pray nothing kicks off, but I wouldn't be massively surprised if it did...

MarshaBradyo · 14/09/2022 16:44

I think people are misjudging them general mood in London atm

I’m not sure if it’s wishful thinking but I suppose wanting riots etc isn’t new on here

But most Londoners are rich like in every major capital of the world. Why would those explode?

Agree you seem excited, the current royal pomp and ceremony seems to have sparked hope amongst some that it will be used as a lever for socialist revolution… it won’t.

I am in zone 4 and I can confirm there is a febrile atmosphere of discontent that you can cut with a knife. Everyone has been sharpening their pitchforks and stockpiling on Molotov cocktails. I shall be leading the charge when Countdown is over and after I have taken the washing off the line.

Republicans tend to be more vocal. Most people I know who aren’t vocal royalists either I’ve found from reactions of the queen died that they are in support of the royal family. I look at a republic like the USA and don’t see any less wealth and privilege, if anything the royal family seem to have a little more humility

Wow. I live in California near where Prince Harry bought a house. Do you have any idea how successful you have to be to buy a $15million house in Montecito? Oprah lives in the area- her net worth ALL EARNED BY HER is estimated at over $2billion. Do you think Harry saved up? Or his wife with a part on a cable tv show hardly anyone watched paid for it? No, you did. And people bleating on about taxes are missing the point- these fuckers robbed your asses generations ago. The top landowners in London are the royals. Now they just have to make sure you STFU about it.

I agree.
Hazza was given money for that house by Daddy-
Royals don’t pay inheritance tax, either, yet the humble homeowner who wants to leave their modest home to their kids will see Inheritance Tax of 40 % kick in over quiite a low threshold.
£350k?
Queen had savvy accountants, as do all the Royals.

DH’s employer (very large company) have advised staff to stay away from London until after the funeral. I assume they are concerned about terrorism rather than protests, but they haven’t given clarification

@LightDrizzle I have been thinking exactly the same.

Bonjovispjs · 14/09/2022 22:45

Most Londoners are rich? 🤣 That made me laugh from my tiny, cramped studio flat in London.

Twillow · 14/09/2022 22:53

I think if this were a different country then yes. But as a nation, we have a tendency to be long-suffering and the boiling-frog political climate of the last ten years has reinforced the feeling that there is not much hope for change.
However, the ingredients for a perfect storm may well be brewing - the shambolic monarchy we have inherited in contrast with the pretty genuine respect and affection for the late queen, how Truss copes with her new role, how the economy fares over the next months. Winter is indeed coming...

I know. I would say that 10% of Londoners are rich. In order to sicken myself, I just googled the cost of a semi detached house on my road. I found two for sale. One is for £1,100,000 for a 4 bed semi-detached house. Mind you, it has an impressive garden. The other one is asking for offers over £800,000 for a 3 bed semi-detached house. In order to afford a mortgage, you need some serious dosh behind you.
Go to the other end of my road and well...... let's just say that I fit in better on the other end 😂

I saw an interesting Tiktok of Truss. I'll see if I can find it.
