Especially if it’s roast Lamb

Had garden peas on ours yesterday.
Did anyone else have mushy peas on the Xmas dinner years ago?
We always did when we were kids but I'm not sure if it was the norm then or if my mam just liked them. They were the ones that she soaked overnight

I love fresh buttered garden peas with a little mint sauce mixed in with a lamb roast. I would be a touch narky if I saw them with pork or beef though...

We usually do:

Cauliflower and broccoli cheese
mashed swede and carrot
roasted honey parsnips
That nice posh kale that I can’t remember the name of
Potato’s
red cabbage
stuffing
Yorkshire puddings
meat
gravy.

The no person likes peas but will not accept them as being part of a roast dinner

Well that’s plain stupid

I’m missing the point but can’t you just make a smaller portion for the person that wants it or do them every other week?

Not on a Sunday dinner definately not they belong with fish or steak

I once went to a friends house years ago and her Mum served tinned mushy peas with roast chicken 🐔 🤮 with bloody mint sauce on them!! Wtf is that all about!!!!

They’re only ok if you need to bulk up the other vegetables. But there should be at least two other “proper” veg.

Report
GretaVanFleet · 12/09/2022 21:35

I hate peas but I do them for everyone else because they’re another veg on the plate and they’re also quick. I just don’t put any on my plate.

Yes, but not a Sunday lunch :)

I love peas, I'd happily have them with a roast dinner. I have to say though, I only do them if I don't have enough of summat else green to make the plates look less beige, like if we ask someone to come but I only have a small head of broccoli or whatever. They add some green bulk, they're not in my top 10 of green veg to have with a roast.

Gosh there are done strange people. How could anyone not like peas?

I am quite happy to have them as one of the veg with a Sunday roast but we always have at least two other types, eg carrots and savoy then gave peas as the third.

Weirdest combo I can remember is school dinners which served cold slices of beetroot with fish. I mean, who risks giving beetroot to small children in their school clothes anyway.

DH requests them whenever we have a roast.

No because I don't like them! But yes if you do. Do as you peas really.😂

Report

No. I love peas but they should never be eaten with gravy

Report
RewildingAmbridge · 12/09/2022 23:05

I love peas, but they don't belong on a roast, they belong on any other quick dinner because they take two minutes to cook, roasts deserve roasted parsnips, carrot and swede mash, something dark green and irony.
Petit pois for the win....

This. Possibly without the pun. 🤣

I mean, I eat peas if they’re on my plate. But I’d never choose to put them there.

Depends on the roast surely?

Roast lamb, peas and mint sauce is a classic.

Chicken, beef and pork - no

Gammon ham - yes!

Report
TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 12/09/2022 23:25

Marrow fat or mushy YES

garden peas in rice (not with a roast dinner.)

I would say it’s an optional extra!

My dd likes them so I tend to do them, but wouldn’t say it’s traditional as such.

This is such a welcome change from the competitive undereating we get on Mumsnet.

Peas are fine on a roast here, unless they're mushy peas, in which case the police have to be called.
