To find the Paddington memes so irritating and borderline offensive?

Getting lots of Paddington memes on my Facebook feed related to the Queen's death. Even saw a disgustingly twee one today with an image of Paddington and the Queen walking off into the distance hand in hand, with a caption something like 'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?' 🙄

Now I know the Paddington sketch from the Jubilee was mildly amusing, I enjoyed it at the time, but for some reason this mawkish and ridiculous association of a child's toy with the death of a respected leader is really pissing me off. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?

Is Paddington dead!?!?

This was my 6 year old’s response to seeing the image.

The thing is I feel like one sketch has now taken a life of its own.
If HM had been connected with Paddington in a more long standing way then fine. But it was literally one sketch in the last year of her life.
The first pic / meme was quite sweet. Now it’s just very annoying and repetitive.
Feels like it’s reducing the wonderful rich huge wealth of experiences down to one small sketch and a marmalade sandwich.
People have put jars or marmalade in with flowers ffs.
I personally don’t want HM to be forever connected with Paddington.

Exactly. Imagine in 500 years she'll be affectionately remembered as The Queen of Marmalade or something else entirely ridiculous.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 12/09/2022 20:24

Queen / Paddington is the perfect psychological blank canvas for boomers to project their own grief for the loss of their own parents onto.

Bubblebubblebah · 12/09/2022 20:24

If someone doesn't make "Paddington the Reaper - on a route to the end" movie about unsuspectful Paddington being a mediaeval grim reaper who took on more appeasing modern form and now suffers because he has to be lovely most of the time and eat the sandwiches he freaking hates now, but once about 107 years ago he tasted one and said "that's ok" so the overlords did "aw he must love them, let it be his signature thing" and so they did. And now he is quietly seething and about to have a breakdown when he will kill everything alive. He is making contacts in underworld and occasionally throws them a big soul.

I so hope we would have Dean and Sam in🤞🤞🤞🤞

Bubblebubblebah · 12/09/2022 20:26

I got so into it i forgot the "I will be so dissaponted" bir😂

'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?'

I don't understand that one. Unless Paddington is also dead.

To be fair Paddington is at least 64 now and spectacled bears only live til they're 20. So yes, I'd think Padders is long since dead. He makes a perfect escort.

KitKatKathy · 12/09/2022 20:29

Considering the Queens guards wear hats made of bear skin, it always struck me as an uneasy friendship....

Antarcticant · 12/09/2022 20:30

Queen of Marmalade

It does seem odd that this tiny, tiny fragment of her 70 year reign now seems to be defining her death.

Lifeomars · 12/09/2022 20:30

Paddington, the grim reaper or the Angel of Death! Good friend of mine who is usually restrained and not given to displays of sentiment posted that image of the Queen hand and paw with Paddington. I think people are just getting swept up in the strangeness of these days and the fact that the coverage seems to be non-stop

Imsupertangirl · 12/09/2022 20:32

I guess the idea is that Paddington is in the world of make believe, as is heaven, so it makes sense he can take care of her in that realm…….

MadeWithCare · 12/09/2022 19:37

I thought it was just me. They're very cute but surely completely inappropriate and possibly offensive. Paddington is not a deity.

Well he could be to somebody, there are deities associated with bears. I bet there's a neo-pagan somewhere with a Paddington on their altar. Who cares.

onlythreenow · 12/09/2022 20:37

I'm over all these ridiculous threads with people moaning about things which don't matter. Some people hate these memes, some love them, most probably don't actually have strong feelings either way. However, there is no need for people who - for some reason or other - seem to think they are so superior they must rush into print to let all on MN know. Get over yourself.

GettingStuffed · 12/09/2022 20:38

On the same line as an idiot gurning as the coffin goes passed him

Isaidnoalready · 12/09/2022 20:38

People are printing the memes and selling them on ebay as bumper stickers and photos

Incidentally anyone got any Paddington toys now is the time to sell ebay is going crackers for them

Figgygal · 12/09/2022 20:38

Agree she wasn't a cuddly old granny she was a fucking leader the likes of which the world will never see again.

Well that's everyone told. Grin

vera99 · 12/09/2022 20:39

@onlythreenow the problem is that you are now moaning so I'm going to moan about all the people that are moaning about moaning😁.

BlueThingie · 12/09/2022 20:40

The Queen, Prince Philip and Paddington, together at last.

I've got one of the big ones in the loft with child size wellies. Not sure exactly which bit of the loft though so he'll have to stay up there in loft heaven.

Queen of Marmalade

It does seem odd that this tiny, tiny fragment of her 70 year reign now seems to be defining her death.

But it's not, is it? Have you somehow missed all the coverage about her life and achievements which were ready to roll from the moment her death was announced or are you just being contrary?

W00p · 12/09/2022 20:43

It's the poetry that gets me, there's one doing the rounds on social media that has been shared millions of times but reads like it's been written by someone with a severe concussion. Awful. I'm also almost expecting an Elton John song to come out shortly, God forgive us and save us.

Always4Brenner · 12/09/2022 20:43

mamabear715 · 12/09/2022 19:31

No, tbh I don't mind at all.
Might be just me but I think they are quite sweet. Now, the sketch of HRH as Freddie Mercury, I think is awful..

Agreed but then I loathe queen anything to do with them I’ve had it up to here with group.

Comedycook · 12/09/2022 20:43

So cringe..definitely appeals to a certain type (to put it politely).
