To think my GP practice shouldn’t shut next Monday?

I’m not anti-monarchist but was surprised when I got a text from my medical centre saying out of respect for HRH, they will be closed on Monday. Can’t they have a 2 min silence and then see the patients who need them? It’s just going to put strain on OOH and A&E departments.

do you work and will you be given the day off?

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 12/09/2022 17:36

It's a bank holiday. Of course they won't be open

Wearegoingtoneedabiggerboat · 12/09/2022 17:36

Isn’t it just like any other bank holiday when GP surgeries shut.

TabithaTittlemouse · 12/09/2022 17:36

Maybe they want to watch the funeral?

Bootsandcat · 12/09/2022 17:37

If schools are closed and the staff have kids, how would you suggest they go to work?

A lot of GP surgeries have opened on bank holiday recently to relieve burden on hospitals.

I do agree that it’s an additional strain having to cancel and rebook.

I actually wish they’d just had the funeral on a Sunday!

ps I work bank holidays. I’ll have the extra day another time.

abovedecknotbelow · 12/09/2022 17:43

Will you be working?

Kedece2410 · 12/09/2022 17:45

My GP surgery closes every bank holiday. I wouldn't expect this to be any different

Astounding · 12/09/2022 17:45

Will you be working?

I had to take early retirement as I have a rare genetic condition, so I won’t be working.

a) have some respect

b) maybe consider the staff want to go to London/watch on the TV.

WhatWouldHopperDo · 12/09/2022 17:45

It’s all about their contract and that says they are not obliged to open on any bank holiday.

Most will struggle with staffing with schools being closed.

I didn’t think of that.

It's an official bank holiday. So any workplace that usually closes for BH will be closed. That includes GP surgeries.

PeterRabbitt · 12/09/2022 17:49

I run a GP Surgery. My children's schools are closed as are many of our doctors, nurses and most of our support staff.
It's also a fucking nightmare logistically and contractually because of the short notice .
HTH.

TabithaTittlemouse · 12/09/2022 17:36

more likely, a critical mass of staff is going to need to take the day off to look after children not at school, rendering the practice non-functional.

That makes a lot of sense. I am being unreasonable.

Do you have an appointment next Monday with them that has been cancelled?

Nursemumma92 · 12/09/2022 18:00

Whilst they are going to have logistical difficulties with childcare, what are hospital staff, police, fire ambulance, care workers etc supposed to do? At what point do you draw the line?

whynotwhatknot · 12/09/2022 18:03

my dsis and dh both have to work still and my friends company says theyre staying open -its just excuse to close really

wb3 · 12/09/2022 18:04

The issue here is the very short notice and the fact that appointments that are already booked will be cancelled and shunted down a fews days maybe weeks.

I had a hospital appointment booked for Monday. I assume it's been cancelled (the hospital won't pick up the phone). I guess I'll be slotted in at the end of the queue.

I accept all of this.

Can we stop pretending it's just like any other bank holiday. It clearly isn't.

What a refreshing thread. Op asked a question, got the answer, more information and changed mind.
Wished all AIBU were like this.

Woohoo, Op!

Woolandwonder · 12/09/2022 18:06

Mostly around school's not being open. As much as everyone likes a day off, the logistics and workload around a very short notice b/h are v difficult, they might not be any happier about it than you are.

Awoooga · 12/09/2022 18:07

I had an appt next Monday, booked before the Queen passed away, to have a blood pressure review & check up following being admitted to hospital 5 days after birth with pre-eclampsia. It’s now booked for over a week after next Monday.

I assume it’s not a problem to wait that long otherwise they’d have booked me in for sooner, but it makes me think there must be people who’d waited ages for an appointment next Monday that may now make a visit to A&E as they don’t want to wait yet another week to be seen/phoned.

Obviously I don’t think that’s any good reason to go to A&E but poor GP availability is often blamed for people going to hospital unnecessarily.
