To think my GP practice shouldn’t shut next Monday?

I’m not anti-monarchist but was surprised when I got a text from my medical centre saying out of respect for HRH, they will be closed on Monday. Can’t they have a 2 min silence and then see the patients who need them? It’s just going to put strain on OOH and A&E departments.

Everything is the fault of teachers. COVID, the war in the Ukraine, the cost of living crisis, even the weather. Blame those lazy teachers for everything

Except no-one is. So stop with the victim stuff.
And I'm a teacher, as is virtually everyone in my family.

Daisymae55 · 12/09/2022 19:36

It’s mildly annoying but it’s a bank holiday so of course they won’t open. I had an appointment for a joint injection I’ve waited months for that day but has to be delayed now. It’s a one off situation and I’m not too fussed.

saraclara · 12/09/2022 19:37

...Or at least no-one is blaming the teachers for things closing on this bank holiday

Irridescantshimmmer · 12/09/2022 19:39

Yeah I agree, but the nedia/newspapera are saying there has to be an adequate out of hours service.

jannier · 12/09/2022 19:43

We have all known our Queen was failing for a fair time, we have also known that her funeral was 99.9% likely to be an official bank holiday....it was written up well before the Queen Mother died and been discussed on and off since. Its one day not a week and is intended to allow us to pay our respects. If people stopped using the NHS for minor things there would be a much bigger impact on waiting lists....ive had children taken becouse of one episode of vomiting or a tempreture with no other indicators. One woman rings the ambulance if shes sick as she can't cope no medical history to worry about just hates being sick.

It's called humour! Every single thread on here regarding the bank holiday seems to all have the same view that businesses are closing because staff have no childcare because schools are closed

tigger1001 · 12/09/2022 19:48

I think it reasonable to be annoyed if you have ended up with a cancelled appointment.

It can be weeks to wait for an appointment, and if someone has already waited of course they will be if is then cancelled.

That will have a massive knock on effect

Zilla1 · 12/09/2022 19:48

NHRTT but steady on, OP, considering responses and admitting to not considering something and BU. You'll get thrown off MN. We're finding colleagues with children are saying it's not just schools, some nurseries and family informal care for children younger than 4 years is falling over where grandparents want to travel to London.

What if it was a hip replacement that you had been waiting 2 years for?

Zilla1 · 12/09/2022 19:55

@funtycucker Too far and too soon when you brought in the weather. If you'd have stopped with COVID, the cost of living and Ukraine then it would have been fine. Read the room and beware of teachers. Especially PE teachers. And don't forget teachers' blame for Brexit, can' believe you didn't mention that. Gove, Rees Mogg, Johnson and all the ERG members publicly blamed ... teachers.

cptartapp · 12/09/2022 19:56

I work in general practice but not on a Monday. Toying with bringing up with my manager that all non-Monday workers should now be owed extra hours leave pro rata in lieu of this.

maddy68 · 12/09/2022 20:00

Of course it should close. It's a bank holiday. You don't expect it to open on a Sunday ! The same emergency cover will be in place

paisley256 · 12/09/2022 20:02

@SierraSapphire I had that predicament at the last bank holiday, where like you I have to have the blood test 2 days before chemo. They said to have the blood test on the Friday and that if there were no slots available, the phlebotomist has to honour it as we're a priority. Hope you get yours sorted.

SierraSapphire · 12/09/2022 20:13

Thanks paisley256 - I had it on the Thursday last time but my neutrophils only just made it over the line, so I'm a bit nervous about doing it that early (and I'm supposed to be working on Thursday) and I have to take my DM to an appointment on Friday making that difficult (her heart is failing and her lungs filling with fluid so it's also pretty important!) - but it's the not knowing when I'll know when I'm juggling many other things on top of cancer treatment that's difficult, but seems lots of NHS services haven't made a decision - or haven't communicated a decision.

mycatisannoying · 12/09/2022 20:15

If it wasn't a Bank Holiday, I would fully agree with you OP.

I think this is what happens anyway isn’t it? Bank holidays are calculated pro rata

Runningwithoutstopping · 12/09/2022 20:23

I think many people would rather work I heard some today saying she was told she either had to use a A\L day or take unpaid leave.

TroysMammy · 12/09/2022 20:25

@Jaaxe I've had my 3 pro rata bank holidays, Good Friday and 2 days Jubilee bank holidays this holiday year. I don't work Mondays so I don't get paid for the others. However my colleague who does same hours but works Mondays and Tuesdays gets her holiday entitlement, pro rata bank holidays and the other Monday bank holidays and this year Tuesday Christmas time but that's a story for another time.

paisley256 · 12/09/2022 20:26

@SierraSapphire I had that and my calcium levels were too low this month so they wouldn't do my treatment.

It sounds like you have alot on your plate so fingers crossed you get sorted. Best wishes.

Lavenderosemary · 12/09/2022 21:51

I run essential respite services. Auxiliary services are being closed. Despite me keeping my services open on monday (at a considerable extra cost to the taxpayer, and a knock on staffing consequences of having extra annual leave to cover for everyone now) lots of people can no longer get to my service as a result. Families are struggling and need support so much. Losing these services, even for one day can have a huge impact - the short notice is the issue. I'm already dealing with massively distressed service users. This short notice bank holidays is totally shit, inconsiderate and a fucking mess for health and social care users. People matter. Not to this government though.

Jumpking · 12/09/2022 21:54

Astounding · 12/09/2022 17:54

I run a GP Surgery. My children's schools are closed as are many of our doctors, nurses and most of our support staff.
It's also a fucking nightmare logistically and contractually because of the short notice .

That makes a lot of sense. I am being unreasonable.

All respect to you @Astounding for this post. It's rare it occurs on MN. 👏👏👏

Don't forget the Black Death...I'm pretty sure we started that too!

Astounding · 12/09/2022 22:37

And I find it interesting OP that your comment was aimed at the GP surgeries - what about the dentists, the pharmacies and the opticians. All of whom also offer health care but will not doubt be shut.

I started the thread out of frustration as the steroid injection I’ve been waiting ages for was cancelled and I’m in a lot of pain and generally feeling like shit. I guess if I’d had toothache or needed something from the chemist on Monday I’d have probably have chosen a different service closure to pick on . I didn’t think about the logistics involved though in terms of child care etc.

I hope SierraSaphire and anyone else waiting for really important tests or checks get their appointments rescheduled quickly.

Most will struggle with staffing with schools being closed

I didn’t think of that.

😂

MarigoldPetals · 12/09/2022 22:46

GPs are human. They would like to see and take part in the historic occasion and have a day off just like everyone else. Why would they not want a day off?
