Horsham

Not really an AIBU but currently visiting family in Horsham and today I went for wander around the town centre.

Stunning, model like women everywhere - slim, tall, blonde and tanned, expensive looking clothes, well applied make up.

I felt so out of place in as an overweight person in my jeans, t-shirt and trainers. Even got a pitying look from the partner of one of the above mentioned women.

Lots of expensive looking shops as well.

Horsham seems a very posh place to live!

Never thought about it, but yes you are probably right. Expensive part of the world.

LIZS · 12/09/2022 16:51

Not in my experience. It feels quite run down these days, in comparison to 10+ years ago, and a typical SE demographic,

waterlego · 12/09/2022 16:53

It’s just up the road from me and yes, it’s a nice enough place. Affluent but quite bland, I would say. There are a fair few places like that in Sussex though.

MrsToothyBitch · 12/09/2022 16:56

I worked there for a while. It was alright but I don't recognise the (perfectly nice, perfectly normal looking and seeming) locals from your description of wall to wall glamazons.

squashyhat · 12/09/2022 16:57

Try Crawley just up the road. You will feel much more at home there.

HarlotOTara · 12/09/2022 16:58

I grew up in Horsham and it was bloody boring, go there regularly to visit family now and have never seen loads of glamorous women. I did eat in the same restaurant as Katie Price recently however.

Would love to know where all the expensive shops are as I have never found them.

@squashyhat What do you mean?

It's got a completely different demographic.

It's got a completely different demographic.

Yes, perhaps I should visit Crawley instead. Jeans, t-shirt and trainers and are probably acceptable there.

@squashyhat 🤣🤣🤣

DelurkingAJ · 12/09/2022 21:18

Maybe it’s the demographic of those who aren’t working during the day? (Yes, I know lots of people do shift work)…I figure you haven’t seen us locals who were slumped behind our laptops but those who can afford not to work?

Hahaha!

themimi · 12/09/2022 21:21

Horsham town is a real mix ime. Lots of very affluent people from the rural outskirts who live in mansions. But also some real deprivation.

NellesVilla · 12/09/2022 21:21

Are you joking, OP? Maybe I’ve been spoilt but Horsham is nothing special both in its own and its residents’ appearance.

Do you mean Cranleigh or Chichester which are near and a bit posher? No. I’ve lived in al of these places but can’t afford to buy in any!

HintofVintagePink · 12/09/2022 21:22

I grew up there. Most of the dyed in the wool locals are actually pretty ‘basic’ (jeans and a nice top), so I think you’ve seen the influx of people whose husbands commute to the city.

It used to be a beautiful market town. It’s now an overdeveloped coffee shop/estate agent high street that’s far too close to Crawley.

Bestcatmum · 12/09/2022 21:24

I lived there for 20 years. Can't say I noticed any glamour unless it's changed recently. But then I don't like the south east any more. I live in Somerset. I like the community spirit there and locals live in the villages and haven't been priced out unless you are near Bath or Bristol.
People are much more friendly here than in the south east.

JaceLancs · 12/09/2022 21:27

I used to live in Henfield and still have family in Horsham
on recent visits I’ve noticed it’s gone more upmarket but not as much as OP describes
on the other hand was really surprised by how affluent the locals in Guildford appeared whilst I was there a few months ago for a work event - lots of fancy shops too

Surprised no-one from Crawley has responded yet! Maybe they don't do MN there?

I'll stick my hand up! I lived in Crawley from 1978 to 1983. I've never been back.
Horsham was where my classmates went to buy jodhpurs and get fitted for riding hats.

WibbleBibble · 12/09/2022 23:07

I used to shop in Creepy Crawley when I was looking for something cheapish, otherwise Id shop in T Wells. Horsham was always a bit meh - nice but nothing special. It has been a while since I've been there though

Coffeeisnecessary · 12/09/2022 23:08

We certainly do have mumsnet in Crawley!! 😂 I love both towns but Horsham is a bit up it's own arse. Really fancy a trip to Guildford now someone has mentioned it, not that I can afford anything there on my poor Crawley wages...

lawandgin · 12/09/2022 23:16

@WibbleBibble was just about to reference creepy Crawley 😂

BaronessBomburst · 12/09/2022 23:24

DB got given a book called Creepy Crawlies from DGP. They thought it was hilarious, as did he bring only about 6 at the time. Grin
