Not really an AIBU but currently visiting family in Horsham and today I went for wander around the town centre.

Stunning, model like women everywhere - slim, tall, blonde and tanned, expensive looking clothes, well applied make up.

I felt so out of place in as an overweight person in my jeans, t-shirt and trainers. Even got a pitying look from the partner of one of the above mentioned women.

Lots of expensive looking shops as well.

Horsham seems a very posh place to live!

I think both Horsham and Crawley feature in the book of Crap Towns!

We used to go to County Mall on a Saturday. Ah the memories.

MrsMo21 · 12/09/2022 23:28

Never seen any of the sort of people you describe in Horsham. Real mix of people usually.

BaronessBomburst · 12/09/2022 23:29

This one!

NC'd Blush

From Crawley, lived there from 1997 (when I was born) until I was 19. It was really fun to grow up in, lots to do and I lived in one of the 'nicer' areas (not Pound Hill nice though Wink). I went to the Catholic school there and it was nice. However, it did have a high crime rate which my friends that still live there tell me is a lot worse now. Most people I know that still live there wish that they didn't. I was sad to leave it at the time but glad in hindsight.

Getofftheladder · 12/09/2022 23:37

Hahaha. I lived there for 10 years and it’s a pretty average bland and boring town. Average amount of affluence and plenty of poverty. Very expensive place to live.

The council are apparently very hot on keeping up appearances. You won’t find a homeless person anywhere on the streets as they get chased off.

TooHotToRamble · 12/09/2022 23:50

Be been to Horsham loss of times and never felt out of place in jeans and a t shirt. It's really nothing special, it's a generic town with a few good shops, and ime people don't come across as particularly posh.

Yaslana · 01/01/2023 13:35

this came up on a 'recommended' end of post, and I thought, ok lets see what is AIBU about Horsham....

Was very suprised with the Op saying this

I always found Horsham a bit odd - in an American werewolf way for non locals, but nothing like the OP says.

OffToThatPlace · 01/01/2023 14:41

Horsham has changed beyond recognition over the past 10-15 years, there are hundreds of new build estates and lots of 'outsiders' now living there.

Also sounds like OP may have some body image issues. Don't compare yourself, OP!

Visit all 3 towns mentioned regularly for shopping. Guildford, full of students, crusties and other beggars, Friary Centre not bad though. Crawley, as said known as Creepy Crawley but the shopping mall isn’t too bad. Includes a shop called Yours for the larger lady hence my visits. Horsham, very pretty shopping centre and has a branch of Chococco for those in need of naice hot chocolate, clientele larger ladies like myself. Crawley also has the added bonus of being the home town of Robert Smith from The Cure which makes it ok in my book

DoorstoManual · 01/01/2023 14:55

Horsham RFU have an AGP it is horrible and their clubhouse is not much cop.

Just for balance. Xmas Grin

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 14:56

My welsh grandfather and my grandmother lived nearby for many years, and if what is described is how Horsham is now, it has changed this century.

vdbfamily · 01/01/2023 15:01

Horsham used to be very posh but I read yesterday that Horsham, Hastings and Crawley are close to top of a national poll of worst places to live in UK. I was very surprised!

LiftyLift · 01/01/2023 21:34

Horsham has a John Lewis at Home, so it’s posh, innit.

MaitlandGirl · 01/01/2023 21:41

I grew up in Horsham (Dad worked for the RSPCA and mum was a nurse at the hospital) and it was always a nice town that felt posh because of the old buildings.

I thought it went downhill when the Cheese Shop in the Carfax closed though.

Haven’t been back for years but from what I’ve seen on FB it’s changed a lot and I probably wouldn’t recognise it now.

MabelFurball · 01/01/2023 21:41

Whereabouts are you from OP?

Jenasaurus · 01/01/2023 21:45

pagopago · 12/09/2022 22:48

Surprised no-one from Crawley has responded yet! Maybe they don't do MN there?

I lived in the same road as Robert Smith and my first job at 17 was working for his dad at Upjohns

Jenasaurus · 01/01/2023 21:48

Also Centre Parcs is coming to Crawley, just down the road from me at Crabbet Park, near the Worth Way

LoveAHolidayOrTwo · 01/01/2023 21:48

I really like Horsham.
I love Crawley, I’ve lived in three of the villages for the past 25 years. My DC went to really good schools, did as well as their privately educated cousins and now have good careers and really nice groups of friends. There’s so much to do here and best of all I’ve made so many friends. It’s great being able to get into a London on a fast train that takes under 35 minutes or drive down to the coast.

Jenasaurus · 01/01/2023 21:50

Not all of Crawley is scummy, this a house in my old road on sale for 740 000

Fairylightsandstuff · 01/01/2023 21:51

I used to live in Horsham and it seemed posh to me at first but it does have a dark side 😬 I live in Arundel now which is way posher 😂

Me too and my own DC, went to Milton Mount and then Hazelwick which produced Gareth Soutgate

ChampagneLassie · 01/01/2023 21:54

Jenasaurus · 01/01/2023 21:57
