So the palace has now told people to stop leaving marmalade sarnies and such...

Those who thought it was ok the first time still think it's ok? Or now the palace acknowledges how ‘unsustainable’ it is change your opinion?

FWIW. It was idiotic the first time and still is.

It’s so bloody weird. The queen agreed to take part in a short Paddington skit, just as she did with James Bond in 2012. Why is she apparently forevermore linked to Paddington?
Leaving a James Bond book or a martini would be no weirder than a marmalade sandwich.

These people are being no more performative in laying flowers than the people here seeking attention by sneering at them.

I don't want to leave flowers, teddies and sandwiches outside Buckingham Palace but if people want to, let them do it and stick your own money in a collection box. I won't be doing that either.

The supermarket flowers and soggy soft toys will get cleared up soon enough so don't fret. I'm a local council tax payer and I'm not. I won't even notice it when the new bills come in. The marmalade sandwiches will attract no more rats than those already attracted by the food waste left all over the country but particularly that part of London which is packed with bars, restaurants and supermarkets to feed tourists and locals.

I get the floral tribute thing, obviously. But the sandwich? Just can't get my head around it

Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith had died.
I wish to leave a tribute, in her memory.

I shall leave two slices of bread, with some marg and a bit of marmalade.

@ancientgran

I'm invested because everywhere I turn there it is. It's in the media, on social media, at work, everywhere. I would hope that what's actually happen ing would wake some people up of the hypocrisy of it all.

I've seen it on TV but the rest of the world round me seems perfectly normal. No one seems to be laying flowers where I live, I work with LD people in a home and they aren't bothered, I'm watching netflix/prime etc as I don't want endless coverage on TV. I'd say the only thing that's changed for me is there doesn't seem to be any news on the news but given months of Johnson/Truss etc it might not be a bad thing.

I think it's because Paddington is perceived as cute and cuddly maybe? Fits in better than James Bond.Grin

It was just one person's idea. Lovely but copied. My flowers was £4 from Lidl. Takes all sorts I guess. We shop at Lidl so it seemed fitting. Yes I could have given the £4 to the food bank but so could I have given my hundreds of pounds Legoland tickets cash to the foodbanks. It's my money ( what little I have) to piss away as I see fit. You can waste money and also donate to food banks etc

This.

Someone is actually “angered” by a mourner leaving marmalade 🥪 I mean good God.

Maybe people felt more connected to the Paddington sketch as it was actually her. She didn't actually jump out of the helicopter in the Bond sketch and I'm sure whoever did the stunt would be amused if people really thought they were the Queen.

The Queen is not a patron of Thee Dog’s trust. Ruth Langford, Eammon Holmes and John. Barrowman are. But it’s a brilliant
charity to donate to in her memory.

John Barrowman? At least (male) dogs are supposed to go around in public with their willies out.
<grim>

The Queen was a patron of Dogs' Trust - it says so on their website:

Plus, the stunt man who actually did the jump 'as' the Queen (sorry, spoiler alert) has recently been sent to prison for GBH. As far as I know, Paddington isn't likely to have any skeletons in the closet.

Probably less so after he was jailed at her pleasure....

I probably won't even have to pay for it anyway. That bit outside Buckingham Palace is owned by the Crown Estate and Green Park where some of the flowers have been moved to is a Royal Park. No doubt there'll be some way of getting the taxpayer to chip in. There usually is but I can't be bothered frothing about it.

As a one-off the first time, it was inspired.

But for other people to do it, then food left lying about will just encourage rats and urban foxes.

People place a Fictional character with some food for dead person to eat... yeah "inspired" is the first thing that pops into my head... followed by "morons"

They should just stop leaving plastic that in general. She was clearly doolally when they coerced her into doing that Paddington sketch and now everyone's gone Paddington mad. Imagine being mainly remembered for that?!

I live in windsor.

Local dry cleaner has a table out front with tubs of flowers that ppl can take for free-or offer a donation to Thames Hospice.

I'd like to see more of this.

Also if you want to leave flowers please take the plastic off first!!

She asked to do it - presumably because her great grandchildren love Paddington. And she was very far from doolally, you do realise she was still doing her red boxes until almost her dying breath?

@Tort

I'm actually not surprised that the palace didn't request this. It serves them very well in terms of demonstrating how loved and therefore needed the RF is. With billions being inherited by the family instead of donated to just causes or perhaps even remuneration owing to the source of the money in the first place, the whole thing is sickening. Instead people are still falling over themselves to show there ‘respect’.

@Sparklybutold You're spot on.

A one-off was cute. More than that will attract rats and seagulls!

I think leaving flowers (preferably unwrapped) is fine as eventually they can be composted and used for fertiliser or soil improver.

Leaving food and toys like that is just frankly batshit. Food will go mouldy, if it doesn't attract rats first. The rest is litter. If the toys get damp they will moulder too and then cannot be gifted to charity.

People are foolish. I had hoped that we had moved on from this cringeworthy rubbish after the death of Diana. Maybe not.

She certainly wasn't doolally. I think that applies much more to some members of the public.

I absolutely loved how someone had left a marmalade sandwich from Paddington bear, it actually made me tear up a little!

But it’s ridiculous that more than one person did it and if you can see a load of sandwiches then surely you’d know not to leave any!

I bet the birds had a field day, eating the sandwiches and then shitting all over the flowers and notes left.
