So the palace has now told people to stop leaving marmalade sarnies and such...

Those who thought it was ok the first time still think it's ok? Or now the palace acknowledges how ‘unsustainable’ it is change your opinion?

FWIW. It was idiotic the first time and still is.

I wish they'd suggest that people donate to some specific charities which meant a lot to the Queen - maybe have donation bucket or an easy way to donate via debit card. I know some people will still want to leave flowers but as an alternative

sunglassesonthetable · 12/09/2022 16:23

I think the act of laying tribute in grief goes very deep in our culture. It was completely and utterly predictable that this would happen and it seems a pity that there wasn't a plan in place that would enable people to fulfil their need to place a physical tribute in a way that could be a force for good. Mass foodbank donation etc. Clearly this would need logistical planning but it isn't like they haven't had the time or resources to plan it.

👍🏻 yes

Stravaig · 12/09/2022 16:23

I agree. Official guidance should have requested no flowers at all, but rather donations to food banks, or to the Queen's most beloved charities. I agree with a previous poster that there has been a large element of PR in the flowers and crowds, with the media grooming us on what is expected of us.

There have been so many opportunities, large and small, to be progressive, to be democratic, to show awareness and leadership, yet at every turn they and we show how backward the whole concept of a monarchy is.

The succession and inauguration protocols have been arranged so as to prevent any questioning at all of whether modern democratic society should even have a monarchy much less impose it on other nations without their consent. We should be horrified.

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2022 16:25

But there we are

TBH I've no idea where anyone is. Other than everyone telling everyone else that they are doing the death of the Queen incorrectly, and we've another week of this at least...

StillWeRise · 12/09/2022 16:25

yes, will no one think of the bears???

Blossomtoes · 12/09/2022 16:25

We should be horrified.

Who are you to dictate how other people should think or feel? It’s the height of arrogance.

Turn of phrase.

This is definitely the thread for it as you'd know.

Are you always this argumentative? It's just her personal opinion...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/09/2022 16:28

The Bonne Maman Bitter Orange marmalade is so specific that it's given me hysterics. Did the person internally debate whether HM only went for the good stuff or didn't mind eating Asda's own?

I suppose, at least, a sealed jar is practical (as long as it doesn't get broken) in that it can be taken and used by somebody who can't easily afford to buy food, unlike a spoonful smeared on some bread in a bag. Then again, anybody in need who was seen removing it would probably suffer the wrath of any onlookers and be shamed for it.

nachoavocado · 12/09/2022 16:29

So the Queen did one sketch with Paddington Bear and now people have decided she would ry appreciate a sandwhich tribute?!

RequiemForAcat · 12/09/2022 15:36

The Queen was a patron for Dogs Trust. I hate giving to charity though so I’d rather just stick some items in a food bank.

The Queen is not a patron of Thee Dog’s trust. Ruth Langford, Eammon Holmes and John. Barrowman are. But it’s a brilliant
charity to donate to in her memory.

@LatteCappucino

With Deborah James I think there is an important fundamental difference and that is the fact she was grounded. She lived and came from the real world. The queen and her entourage would have known about this for months/years. They planned for everything else which served there own agenda, such as securing there own wealth but the whole mourning circus? No need as it serves them just well.

And if they had immediately issued a statement saying don't leave flowers you'd be moaning about how dare they assume anyone would leave flowers.

No one's asked you to leave flowers or anything else, not sure why you are angry. Seems over invested to me.

StillWeRise · 12/09/2022 16:25

I do feel slightly sorry for Paddington - unwittingly seemingly drafted in as the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse/Grim Reaper.

Because how dare people spend their money the way they want to and not how other people think they should?! 😂

Yep. I thought it was poignant.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/09/2022 16:32

She did one clip with Paddington bear and suddenly she is permanently associated with him? It's a bit weird tbh, It's like when you mention you like frogs in passing and then for years everyone buys you frog-related items for birthdays and Christmas.

Yes! Best to keep telling everybody how very fond you are of gold-bullion-themed souvenirs - specifically gold bullion Grin

John Barrowman? At least (male) dogs are supposed to go around in public with their willies out.

It gets worse. On my FB this morning (sorry I use it because I like a good argument) there was a suggestion to clap on the doorstep at 7pm tonight Christ knows why.

One of my friends will do it because she's a master of virtual signalling. Can't stand it myself.

BrookeDavisQueen · 12/09/2022 16:36

CrotchetyQuaver · 12/09/2022 16:19

I wish the palace would set up a memorial fund for HMQ that people could donate to instead of all this money "wasted" on flowers that will only be sent off for composting when they've gone off.

Then that could be distributed to charities, perhaps the ones she was involved with or dear to her heart. I'm sure millions might be raised if they did that. A bunch of flowers isn't that cheap to buy...

They've asked people to donate to the Queen's favourite charities. But the charities have stopped fundraising so no-one knows. Bonkers.

Mine too-in the local 'news' paper. are you in Worcestershire? I'll be at the pub, so very worried I'll be unable to join in. Grin

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/09/2022 16:37

I suppose Daniel Craig is pleased the Queen survived long enough to do the Paddington sketch.

In a parallel universe people were leaving effigies of him in his tux outside palaces and doing bad poems/cartoons of him with HMQ.

Sparklybutold · 12/09/2022 16:38

@ancientgran

I'm invested because everywhere I turn there it is. It's in the media, on social media, at work, everywhere. I would hope that what's actually happen ing would wake some people up of the hypocrisy of it all.

Don't think it's weird really.

It seems to have inspired people as they both, HMQ and PB, embody similar old fashioned values form another era.

Also it was very adventurous really and seen as being done in such good spirit by the Queen. Same as the parachute jump.

Just really caught the public imagination.Things like that really gel.

Newdawnnewdog88 · 12/09/2022 16:40

When I was a child (long ago) you were able to buy a cardboard flower (it wasn’t a poppy; that came later) it was a small purple flower … in aid of a charity I think.

Next time I think it would be good if we organised something like this so the money that would have been spent on flowers goes directly to charity.

Having said that, and on a purely practical level, I am glad that florists in London and some other areas have had a boost to their business since Covid.
