Car scratch

carrotsandpeaass · 11/09/2022 18:40

Just bashes my car door off a concrete post while leaning in to get something.

It's two days old.

It's lifted some paint off.

My husband is not going to be happy Blush

Any quick fixes? I have the car tomorrow and it's parked at an angle that the mark can't be seen from the house.

T cut?
Car paint touch up pen?

Any good experiences of these things?

Helllpppppp

T cut is your friend here!

T cut is your friend here!

How does it work? Is the result very good?
I've never used it before!

How deep is the scratch? What colour / finish is it? There might be someone local who can repair if you check socials.

carrotsandpeaass · 11/09/2022 18:57

It's black

It's not a dent but it's lifted the paint right off

I can't really afford to pay someone I was hoping for a few pounds at Halfords or something!

It has a few minor marks here and there so I could get away with playing dumb if I fix it subtly and it gets noticed later Grin

If you've lifted the paint off and down to primer T Cut won't help you.

You need to go to a body shop or that franchised if a car dealer depending on what make the car is and either ask them to touch it in for you or buy a paint stick and do it yourself. If you do it yourself, do lots of little thin layers and build it up.

Thank you

Could you link me to the kind of paint stick you mean?

I nicked a colleagues bumper, got one of those chip repair companies round. Cost £80.

Raul57 · 11/09/2022 20:33

OP, I'm assuming the car cost more than 15k at least.
It's only two days old.
Please do not F it up further as it may cost a lot more.
Be open and honest and tell him. Fact, accidents do happen.
Just tell him

HipsterCoffeeShop · 11/09/2022 20:33

Sorry OP on a new car I would suck it up and call chips away or similar - there's the risk that an amateurish repair won't last & may cause other issues later on.

They're really quick, you could probably get it done tomorrow.

Shade17 · 11/09/2022 20:34

How has it got minor marks on it already if it’s 2 days old? If the paint has come off then likely it will need the panel painting to repair it properly.

Walkden · 11/09/2022 20:37

If it's leased you should definitely get it repaired professionally as you'll get charged for it on the return inspection.

You could send some pics to chipsaway or similar. If it has to go to a body shop they will say so.

carrotsandpeaass · 11/09/2022 20:52

It's second hand not brand new

Chips Away - is your friend , will come to your house and either do it there or take it away for a few hours , bring it back good as new

Ah, I see! You mean you’ve only had it 2 days rather than being 2 days old?

carrotsandpeaass · 11/09/2022 21:34

@Shade17 yeah that's right!

It's m going to go to Halfords tomorrow and ask for some advice and see what's available and take it from there.

With it being second hand and with a few minor marks already I'm not terribly fussed about a professional job as long as it's not massively visible like it is now.

Another one advising chips away, they can also do it in works carpark, so it could be fixed without your husband knowing.

carrotsandpeaass · 11/09/2022 21:40

How much will chips away charge for a smaller than a 5p size mark?

OP posts:
PostladyPatty · 11/09/2022 22:06

Chips away or a smart repair as they are called only work on certain areas of the car successful where you can blend out the colour, so like bumpers and mirror casings. If it's on the metal if a door a smart repair company can only do a touch in, for a seamless repair you'd need to pain the door & blend to other panels

I work in the motor trade. Id fess up to husband if I were you, accidents happen and what you've done is annoying but not major.

allboysherebutme · 11/09/2022 22:31

T Cut. X

Raul57 · 12/09/2022 08:49

Ok, it's a second-hand car. If the "paints come away" I'm guessing it's already been repaired and not well if the paints come away. Either way get a quote but I'd be staggered if your OH was upset for more than a couple of minutes so tell him and take his advice. Your choice
