I want to choose when I have a holiday!

I don't want the Queens funeral to take one of my days of holiday entitlement. What if I can't attend something I want to go to because I have no annual leave left because I had to take this off. So annoying.

But some companies are already struggling now they have to pay everyone not to work

Those companies won't offer it. Bank holidays aren't mandatory.

Either your employer will add a bank holiday to your allowance, and then you'll have it off. Or they won't and they'll say either work or take a day of leave. Just like every other BH. No one is being forced to do anything.

Shreik · 11/09/2022 18:35

It's true for me

Do Banks have to do it?

wonderstuff · 11/09/2022 18:36

The government have said it’s up to employers so they can absolutely close and take it out of existing holiday entitlement.

RaininSummer · 11/09/2022 18:36

It's common for all bank hols to be taken out of leave in small companies. My last company did this the previous time we had an extra one for something. It's very annoying and people can't usually opt to work instead.

NOOOOOO but people have carefully worked out their holiday for Christmas and school holidays

Katyy · 11/09/2022 18:37

My bank hols are also take out of my annual leave. two days a week one being Monday. I’m only left with two weeks holiday to choose myself. Now I’ll have even less !

I work an industry that is open every day var Xmas day and Easter Sunday. Nothing has been decided yet and I'm I'm to work that day. Bank Holidays don't mean anything in retail.

Well they still do in that you get the leave you just use it at another time of your choosing.

My bank holidays are part of my leave entitlement.

And you will now be granted those hours for this one .. as a one off event

Cuppaand2biscuits · 11/09/2022 18:38

Your employer will add an extra day's leave to your holiday entitlement.
Our bank holidays come out of our annual leave but the amount of leave given affords for that.

Shreik · 11/09/2022 18:38

Aren't employers annoyed about it then?

CharlotteRose90 · 11/09/2022 18:39

Well I’ll be working it sadly as I work in the airport and people will still be flying on holiday. We won’t cancel flights the same as every other bank holiday, the Uk isn’t going to stop for this day.

Well yes some probably are but the Queen has died so, ya know...

It was always going to happen eventually.

AntiHop · 11/09/2022 18:40

Employees absolutely can make people take it out of their holiday entitlement. Accrording to employment law, bank holidays can form part of the legal minimum. So plenty of people are not getting an extra day off.

Well yes, although dh has used all his leave now so not sure where that leaves him, I expect lots of people will by Sept only have Xmas leave left.

MistressIggi · 11/09/2022 18:41

Do you normally pay nursery fees for bank holidays? I never did

We don't at our current nursery but did at our old one.

Yeah that's the sort of situation I was thinking

My bank holidays are part of my leave entitlement.

Well then you'll get an extra one added to your leave entitlement, but will have to take it on that day. Or work as per your usual BH work arrangements.

mum2bee2022 · 11/09/2022 18:50

CeeJay81 · 11/09/2022 18:26

It's an extra day though. So not taken out of your our holiday entitlement. An extra bank holiday.

Not for everyone, it depends on your employer

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/09/2022 18:50

For both childcare and employment...it depends on your contract

My current employer - "25 days annual leave plus all English bank holidays" = extra day for jubilee, and expecting extra for this. We'll be closed too.

Previous employer - "32 days annual leave". No extra for bank hols, this was inclusive and we were expected to factor in xmas day, boxing day, easter etc in to our plans. Those were the only actual closures, other BH were work if you want. They wouldn't have had to give extra days, but might have done as they were a huge company.

For someone on statutory annual leave allowance it's 5.6 weeks inclusive. And your employer can generally dictate when you take leave unless there's something in the contract.

Shreik · 11/09/2022 18:51

It's not extra for me

Shreik · 11/09/2022 18:51

It's not extra for me

So just a normal working day?

Or you are forced to stay at home, company closed, but coming out of your existing allowance?

steppon · 11/09/2022 18:54

it's a bank holiday...

pickledpotato · 11/09/2022 18:55

Shreik · 11/09/2022 18:51

It's not extra for me

So then you'll just not get the extra day

Why is this so hard for you to understand?
