AIBU to think that if you want a big family party, and you live in a semi detached property, you hire a hall rather than subjecting your neighbours to hours of ear splitting kid’s screeching?

A one off family party?

No sorry, at home- occasional noise is part and parcel of close community living.

MintyChipton · 11/09/2022 17:05

Allowing children to screech for hours is the problem rather than the party.

HeddaGarbled · 11/09/2022 17:05

I don’t think having a daytime family party at home is in any way unreasonable. Screeching children though ………

Hintofreality · 11/09/2022 17:09

This is full on screaming. Elder children in the garden play wrestling with all the noises that sound like advanced labour moans. Younger children screaming and fighting and of course the adults getting shitfaced and oblivious to it all.

it’s not a nicely organising child ten’s tea party with pass the parcel, it’s feral.

You sound like a snob.

If you want to be Hyacinth Bucket then buy a detached home in its own grounds.

Actupfishy · 11/09/2022 17:10

Every week or occasionally?
if it’s the later you are definitely being a grump!
Go out or put on a set of headphones.

Soubriquet · 11/09/2022 17:12

Yabu.

Families are allowed a party

That doesn't change my response.

When you live in close proximity to other people, occasionally there will be noise. Suck it up, or move.

Penguinfeather781 · 11/09/2022 17:15

Personally I’d have hired the hall because I wouldn’t want my house wrecked, but I expect to put up with an occasional party from my neighbours, especially during daytime hours. Ditto building works, diy, loud garden work etc etc - it’s part of living in a community. If it was frequent or at 2am I think you’d have a point.

Hintofreality · 11/09/2022 17:15

Why should I go out? I’ve had a really long stressful week and should be able to relax in my home without constant screeching and screaming.
And I am Not a snob, I just think if you want a large party you should hire a suitable venue.

BuffaloCauliflower · 11/09/2022 17:16

If it was every week, yes fair enough to be pissed off. But a one off. YABU, people can have parties and host in their own homes

Crazycrazylady · 11/09/2022 17:16

Of course they are..
You sound like an absolute killjoy

Starlightstarbright1 · 11/09/2022 17:18

Well currently 92%disagree with you. 🤷

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/09/2022 17:18

🙄my ndn had loads of family round for a party. I just shut the door and put the tv up louder.

Noise is fine, reasonable noise.

Allowing 15 - 20 children to scream, fight, whine and shout a deafening volume is not reasonable noise. It’s rude and entitled.

OP posts:
Vallmo47 · 11/09/2022 17:19

It really depends on the frequency OP and how it was handled beforehand. If it’s a very rare occurrence and your neighbour has nicely approached you to give you advanced notice, sorry but YABU. But if it’s a frequent thing and they haven’t forewarned you at all, YANBU. Loud noise is very frustrating but I’d definitely look the other way if it didn’t happen often. Especially in current climate, hiring a hall isn’t always an option.

pictish · 11/09/2022 17:19

You might think it but it’s not up to you is it? Family parties are allowed. So….

Actupfishy · 11/09/2022 17:20

Why ask then?

Not sure why you bothered asking if you were BU then.

But anyway YABU, it’s a day time party, just because you would hire a venue doesn’t mean everyone else should.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/09/2022 17:29

A one/off kids party is fine. Stop being such a joyless, misery-guts.

StampOnTheGround · 11/09/2022 17:30

A snob!!!! Don't you think you're blaming the wrong person here?

Hintofreality · 11/09/2022 17:40

Ok, I’ll rephrase it,

AIBU for thinking my neighbours are selfish dicks for subjecting us to hours of screeching, shouting and screaming?

OP posts:
Twawmyarse · 11/09/2022 17:43

If it's a one-off and not a regular thing you are being totally U.

I live next to a school and hear the kids shouting/playing every day, several times a day. I love it, it's heartwarming. You sound like a miserable sod OP 😂

tuesday2am · 11/09/2022 17:56

People are allowed to have their family/friends round for parties. Children do often shout/screech/scream. They’re most likely having fun. You said you’ve had a stressful week and I think your frustration is misplaced.
