Whinging on holiday threads

Alltheholidays · 10/09/2022 22:29

Why oh why? I love holiday threads. Started one today, and get loads of ideas from them, and generally love hearing about people’s plans!

You know what you’re getting when you click on one! Yet every time, within a few posts there are posters who pop us to tell everyone they haven’t had a holiday in years, they can’t understand how anyone could spend so much on a holiday yada yada!
Honestly, what is the point of this. Why on earth click on a thread when you know exactly what it’s going to be about, and then complain about it?

Alltheholidays · 11/09/2022 08:44

is it just me then?

Peashoots · 11/09/2022 08:48

Jealousy most likely.
I am fortunate in that I have a holiday most years. But it’s usually a European package holiday (Spain or similar), budgeted down to the last penny. I realise a lot can’t afford this and I’m very lucky.
woukd I love a luxury all inclusive trip to the Maldives, or a safari holiday in South Africa, or a round the world cruise? Yes. Can I afford it? Absolutely not 😁 I don’t begrudge anyone else though.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 11/09/2022 08:49

It's not enough just to avoid the thread for some people; they have to come on and ask how dare you mention, nay, even think about going on holiday when they can't afford to?

It's kinda silly.

Icequeen01 · 11/09/2022 08:55

I saw your other thread and whilst I do agree with you to a certain extent the thread did make me feel a bit uncomfortable when people were posting about how they still had three more holidays left this year and had booked another two for next year. People are finding things very tough at the moment and whilst I agree you should be able to spend your money on what you like it did turn out to be a bit of a bragging thread to be honest.

That's my tuppence worth anyway.

Fizbosshoes · 11/09/2022 08:55

Oh I thought it was going to be a thread about people who are on holiday but also whinging. Which I've also seen.

SavoirFlair · 11/09/2022 08:57

I agree the whinging is just jealousy

It would really, really help though if selfish posters who are desperate for the “traffic” didn’t post their holiday destination questions in AIBU.

a forum where people are served up robust replies, and a forum designed for dilemnas not choices - there’s not one but a handful of holiday forums on Mumsnet all with plenty of daily traffic

If the “Mummy says I’m special” types who want attention posted in the correct place, they might get friendlier replies from people who are actively browsing a holiday forum and so are predisposed to giving friendly advice

Flatandhappy · 11/09/2022 09:01

You will get accused of being tone deaf on here if you post about anything you do/can afford that everyone else can’t which bearing in mind the variety of people here is just daft. Don’t click on posts that are going to offend you. I do agree though that it is best to keep posts on the relevant forum. If you post in YABU be prepared to have your arse handed to you no matter how inoffensive you think you are being.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/09/2022 09:04

I didn't see the other thread. It's not new news that some people can't afford to go on holiday but it's only recently that holiday threads are swamped with sniffy responses about being tone deaf and other bollocks. If it was perfectly acceptable six years ago you would think it would be perfectly fine now and if it isn't, you'd think there would be a much more interesting conversation about double standards?

Are the private school threads similarly expected to apologise for their exclusivity?

Absolutely.

Yes, some people really can't spare the few hundred, that is true, but most people are in situation when they can't afford something. It is like going on a thread about steak and whining that it's tone deaf because someone can only afford chicken.

And most people around me still go on holidays. It's a mix of professionals and nmw workers in hospitality etc. It's not AS bleak as some threads make it sound. Don't take me wrong, the whole cost of living is bleak (though there is lots of misunderstanding and exaggeration imho in many cases), but it looks like lots of people rejuggled expenses to be able to afford x instead of x,y and z and the x in our cases seem to be holidays.

Alltheholidays · 11/09/2022 09:12

i posted my holiday thread on holidays not Aibu.

I don’t understand the obsession with opening threads where people are discussing holidays, when you, for whatever reason don’t/can’t to go on holidays yourself!

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 11/09/2022 09:17

I mean, I'm recovering from pneumonia. I'm just off to the exercise board to complain about their conspicuous and unapologetic display of lung function. Bastards.

PAFMO · 11/09/2022 09:23

I've seen it too.
It's competitive hairshirt wearing.
If you namesearch , very often the people doing this will have other threads where they run 3 cars, buy posh handbags and have their hair and nails done professionally.
I haven't got a car, dh has an old Fiat Panda. I cut my own hair. We've got one telly.
I spend what money I have over on holidays and travel.
It's worse if you dare go abroad. Because UK holidays are so cheap. (my arse)

FayeGovan · 11/09/2022 09:24

I cant afford a holiday right now but i enjoy reading the threads about them and if someone is having a shit time i feel sorry for them.

This just sums it up! There will always be someone who is richer than you, fitter than you, has a better job than you, shops in Waitrose while your budget is more Aldi (me)

If we had to think about other people’s situations before we discussed anything then this forum would be redundant!

I hope you feel better soon. Pneumonia is a fucker.

annoys me too. Everyone had a different financial situation. I used to go on £9.50 Sun newspapers holidays, now I can afford to go most places, as I’ve worked my way up to a good salary, and I’ve worked 6 days per week for the last 18 months. Not saying that those who can’t afford don’t work hard. But if you can’t afford to go on holidays don’t come on threads and complain, best to avoid them altogether.

Alltheholidays · 11/09/2022 09:36

There are also the others who come on to berate people about the environment and flying.

They’ve done their travelling and now have seen the light, and will never set foot inside a plane again, and they think everyone else should do the same.
This is more funny than annoying.😀

Apologies @Alltheholidays - and, this proves your point even more !

I fully agree with you. The people coming on a board called Holidays, to then moan about someone being able to afford a destination?? Mind blown.

AuntieStella · 11/09/2022 09:42

Thread derailments of all types can be irritating (and they never seem to be witty these days)

These are no worse than any others.

Worth remembering that COL is straitening the circumstances for many, and unless energy bills crisis is headed off it could get very difficult for a lot of people.

Having a break might be much wanted/needed, but having a holiday is a luxury.

I think all threads about spending of luxuries will need to be very tactfully worded for a while.

(Also I think some posters have been emboldened by the massed pissing on threads about paying respects to HM QEII, where any spending other than to food bank or another charity is being shouted at)

Arbesque · 11/09/2022 09:43

I think poster are too quick to shout 'jealousy' on mumsnet.

But I agree about people who come on threads simply to sourly criticise the topic of the thread. You see it over and over:

"Not this again"
"Is this all you have to worry about"
"Yawn"

etc etc

Just scroll on by if you've nothing relevant to add. No one wants to hear your non opinion.

Alltheholidays · 11/09/2022 09:43

@Darbs76 Ah, we had some fab sun holidays in the past for very little. Went to France and Holland a few times, and lots of weekends in the uk!

Climate change is real and could be disastrous. Last chance saloon for taking the edge off it. Nowt wrong with reminding those who want a weekend away that destinations reachable by train exist.

If you're seeking holiday options, then options which have the lowest detriment are valid and extremely important responses

Oh yes! There are two types in this case.
1 who did their travelling and now "seen the light" so everyone else must cease immediately and those who "never fly or the planet because it's horrible and no one should fly and even if I could afford it I wouldn't fly".
Eco activism in many cases is very much based on what you can't or don't want to do anyway...

Alltheholidays · 11/09/2022 09:54

@AuntieStella Funnily enough I know you can use the train for weekend away. I use the train often. I also fly often and that’s not going to change.
Did you think you were telling me something I don’t already know?

Yes there are! I pat attention to neither! My favourite is the sack cloth and ashes type ones though.
They can be quite funny 😀
