Maudlin songs other people seem to love.

Just watching Ollie Murrs singing sweet Caroline. That song always make me feel sad. Everyone in the audience seemed to love it.

Come on Eileen is another one. Also anything by Queen or ABBA just depresses me and makes me feel odd.

What songs do you find maudlin even though everyone seems to love them?

Anything by Stereophonics or The Killers.

DavesSpareDeckChair · 11/09/2022 13:47

BearGryllsDad, I hate "Sweet Caroline" as well, dont know why it is so popular or considered such an anthem or such a happy song, although I like "Come on Eileen" and small doses of ABBA and Queen.

Especially when Rod Stewart murdered it

nokitchen · 11/09/2022 15:56

Walking on sunshine. Can't remember who sang it

Actupfishy · 11/09/2022 17:29

@Shade17

i always wonder if Adele is mumsnet member. If she is then I think she’d be the type to come on here and slag herself off for a laugh.

hi Adele!

I've had the time of my life. Is it the Dirty Dancing song? Ghastly

SleeplessInEngland · 12/09/2022 09:33

I don't think maudlin means what quite the OP thinks it means. Whatever you think about Queen, they're not a band I would describe as maudlin. Qute the opposite.

I think most bands have some maudlin songs. But yes, Queen were just noisy on the whole. Grin

"hey there delilah" for me.... dreary and depressing.

And prob reminds me of everyone drunkenly swaying along it , in a nightclub, - i don't get it's popularity, it has no beat or joy, just drear

10HailMarys · 12/09/2022 10:41

The supposedly cheerful songs that I find inexplicably depressing, are:

Mr Brightside,
Dancing Queen
Walking On Sunshine
Relight My Fire
Karma Chameleon
Rock DJ
Celebration
All Right Now
December 1963 (Oh What A Night)
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

They all make we want to slash my own wrists. I genuinely think that if I was on the verge of a breakdown, all these songs would be enough to tip me over the edge.

I think the OP's point is more that there are songs that are generally thought of as upbeat and cheerful, but which some people somehow find depressing or tedious. We Are The Champions is one of those for me. So is Don't Stop Me Now.

Wow yes, you've nailed it with all the above, with the possible exception of 'Karma Chameleon', for me. By the same token, 'Culture Club' (great name, btw!) should never be forgiven for 'Victims!'

As far as I'm concerned 'The Killers' are aptly named: they make me want to commit murder.

I can't stand Young at Heart by the Bluebells.

ddl1 · 12/09/2022 21:47

I really like 'Come On Eileen' but a friend of mine told me that she always hears it as 'Covid 19', which is a little disconcerting!

BearGryllsDad · 12/09/2022 22:37

Young at Heart by the Bluebell

God yes. That is another one isn't it.
