Maudlin songs other people seem to love.

Just watching Ollie Murrs singing sweet Caroline. That song always make me feel sad. Everyone in the audience seemed to love it.

Come on Eileen is another one. Also anything by Queen or ABBA just depresses me and makes me feel odd.

What songs do you find maudlin even though everyone seems to love them?

It probably won't be a popular choice but Nothing Compares 2 U (the Sinead O'Connor version) has irritated me ever since the first time I heard it. Overblown crap.

HRTQueen · 11/09/2022 01:03

Save all your kisses for me - Brotherhood of Man I almost want to cry it evokes such a sad feeling

there is a few 70’s songs that are upbeat but make me feel sad, Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the old Oak Tree, Build me up Buttercup, Knock Three Times I think they were always on the radio and I associate them with a time that wasn’t so happy

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 11/09/2022 01:05

I think we have the same "taste", OP. I feel the same about Come on Eileen, Dancing Queen, Jingle Bell Rock... so sickeningly upbeat that they've always given strange vibes.

Generic party music played by DJs at weddings and celebrations.

Reminds me that everyone in the room is going to die.

ShirleyJackson · 11/09/2022 01:09

I’m Still Standing by Elton John. Reminds me of a horrible time when I was a kid. Gives me a feeling in my tummy like I’m in a lift.

I'm really no one to talk. I was an old school Goth who to this day still listens to the Sisters, the Cure, Dead Can Dance and the Smiths. I also like Radiohead. However ...

Pretty much all the Motown genre. I have a particular aversion to 'Chain Reaction'.

I quite like ABBA in small doses but some of their songs have a very melancholy edge and I can see why they'd be seen as maudlin.

George Michael had a voice like an angel but most of his music made me want to slit my wrists. Including Young Guns and Club Tropicana.

And the mere mention of Simon Cowell or Stock, Aitken and Waterman is enough to make anyone cry ...

The Turtles.. Happy together. They played that all the time on the radio and I always HATED it. Come on Eileen too... he was so grungy before that was a thing.

CoalCraft · 11/09/2022 02:44

I've no idea why but the JCB song always makes me feel really sad. It's almost like a sense of loss!

Nowgimmeagin · 11/09/2022 02:50

Greece (movie)
megamix...gives me the total rage

testerwiki · 11/09/2022 03:17

@Nowgimmeagin

"gives me the total rage" ... just LOVE that! Hilarious.... Thx

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 11/09/2022 03:17

Yep Adele gets on my tits

She has a magnificent voice but she sounds so winey and clingy. I find it utterly depressing that all her output is about broken hearts and relationships.

I could get it when she was a teen and even maybe her second album (21?) but what has she got to moan about now? Have a crack at something other than a ballad love and cheer the fuck up!!!!!

Speedweed · 11/09/2022 04:27

Any Michael Jackson song - thought they were tripe at the time they were released, but now his paedophilia is known I can't understand why he's still played anywhere.

Angels by Robbie Williams. Ugh.

Anything by Ellie Goulding etc - those adult singers who do a cover of a song by slowing it right down and speak-singing like a cutesy lisping toddler.

Facinator · 11/09/2022 04:50

Lady in red, Grease - all of them, Queen's Don't stop me now, all irritate the hell out me.

mycatisannoying · 11/09/2022 09:08

Handbags and Gladrags. I don't care if it's sung by Rod Stewart or the Stereophonics, it's a bloody dreary and depressing tune!

LampLighter414 · 11/09/2022 09:17

Ain’t no crying in the club by Camilla Cabello

Cassimin · 11/09/2022 09:21

When I was pregnant the song
brimfull of asha by corner shop
used to make me physically sick. It was so wierd.
It was like morning sickness but when that song played. Would love to know if there was reason why it happened???

hewouldwouldnthe · 11/09/2022 09:38

Ellie Goulding singing that song from the film fifty shades of grey, 'love me like you do'. Makes me want to vomit.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 11/09/2022 09:54

Yes to the Lady in Red. It gives me the creeps as does Van Morrison’s music. Creeps as in a horrible man perving on a young defenceless woman. Most songs by Coldplay leave me feeing depressed.

InsertPunHere · 11/09/2022 09:58

That awful Eric Claspton one - Tears In Heaven maybe?- is maudlin and awful.

That awful Eric Claspton one - Tears In Heaven maybe?- is maudlin and awful.

He’ll be sorry to hear that but he wrote it about the tragic death of his 4 year old son so I think maudlin is allowed in this case.

AFS1 · 11/09/2022 10:08

Pretty much anything by Madness.

Nitw1t · 11/09/2022 10:15

You are my sunshine

It's a Friend's "couple song" and they had it emblazoned all over stuff in their house and for their first born.

It fully gives me the creeps.

WhisperGold · 11/09/2022 10:23

But... None of these are maudlin?

Sparklingbrook · 11/09/2022 10:25

WhisperGold · 11/09/2022 10:23

But... None of these are maudlin?

No but in the OP they also say

Come on Eileen is another one. Also anything by Queen or ABBA just depresses me and makes me feel odd

TwinsetBeck · 11/09/2022 11:52

jennifer rush- i’m your lady

But... None of these are maudlin?

That's the point of the thread. These songs are the opposite of maudlin, but for some odd reason have the same effect a maudlin song would have on the listener!

Forgot to mention the Bee Gees. And most Christmas music. Although TBF, the lyrics of 'Fairytale of New York' are anything but cheery and upbeat.
