Maudlin songs other people seem to love.

Just watching Ollie Murrs singing sweet Caroline. That song always make me feel sad. Everyone in the audience seemed to love it.

Come on Eileen is another one. Also anything by Queen or ABBA just depresses me and makes me feel odd.

What songs do you find maudlin even though everyone seems to love them?

Without You - Nilsson
Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack version in particular
Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jack

All three are fucking unspeakable.

Sparklingbrook · 11/09/2022 12:41

I adore the Bee Gees, how can you not smile when Stayin' Alive or 'You Should be Dancing' come on? Shock grin]

Sparklingbrook · 11/09/2022 12:44

I hate that one song that goes 'one day you'll leave this world behind so live a life you will remember' or some such. I believe the singer did leave the world behind too.😢

Yes to the Lady in Red. It gives me the creeps as does Van Morrison’s music. Creeps as in a horrible man perving on a young defenceless woman. Most songs by Coldplay leave me feeing depressed.

When I used to watch eastenders many moons ago, Trevor and little Mo had this as "their song", he was a violent abuser, now all I think of when I hear this song is him beating little Mo up!

Blossomandbee · 11/09/2022 12:57

I get that feeling with Come on Eileen too.
I was raised on old music and some of it always made me feel really depressed. Off the top my head:
Whiter Shade of Pale
Nights in white satin
You'll never walk alone
Crying Game
Johnny remember me
Yesterday Once more.

Blossomandbee · 11/09/2022 13:03

At Christmas I find The power of love by Frankie goes to Hollywood really haunting and Only you by Yazoo makes me feel sad

PriOn1 · 11/09/2022 13:05

Yesterday Once more.

I find listening to Karen Carpenter’s voice almost unbearably sad, even the happy songs.

Funkyslippers · 11/09/2022 13:07

I absolutely hate Your Song by Elton. The lyrics in particular are so awful and amateurish, a toddler could write better "if I was a sculptor but then again no..."

Freedomfromguilt · 11/09/2022 13:09

Anything by Rod Stewart.

FredGarland · 11/09/2022 13:11

Anything by Sam fucking Smith

User148563 · 11/09/2022 13:12

Do people know what maudlin is

BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/09/2022 13:12

Oh def Angels … never understood the love for that or the arrogant Robbie

MrsJamin · 11/09/2022 13:13

This, in spades. I can't abide by him, Lewis Capaldi or Michael Jackson, I have to immediately switch it off.

Sparklingbrook · 11/09/2022 10:25

No but in the OP they also say

Come on Eileen is another one. Also anything by Queen or ABBA just depresses me and makes me feel odd

But that just shows that the OP doesn't know what maudlin is

InsertPunHere · 11/09/2022 13:15

@Sparklingbrook - I know it's about the loss of his son, but making a packet of money from a hit song monetising a personal tragedy felt horrible for one thing, and it's a bloody mawkish dirge.

The loss of a child is beyond awful. I can't imagine handing a copy of a song about it to your A&R man as your next single.

MumBoot2022 · 11/09/2022 13:17

The Living Years - Mike and the Mechanics
Honey - Bobby Goldsboro
First of the gang to die (sorry if I’ve got it wrong🤷‍♀️?) - The Smiths
I wasn’t expecting that - ( don’t know who sang it, always turn it straight off)

Onlyforcake · 11/09/2022 13:17

Well, fairytale of New York is supposed to be rather depressing! Two drunks reminiscing about their mutually abusive relationship? What's the upside?

Yes, thanks. And most understood the point of the thread perfectly well.

MatterOfThyme · 11/09/2022 13:19

Friday I'm in love by the Cure.

And that awful song about Make a cup of coffee for your head which is basically about being about to die.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/09/2022 13:20

I love a maudlin song - I'm listening to A Pair of Brown Eyes as I type this Grin

woodhill · 11/09/2022 13:22

Three Times a Lady - so dirgey

And some rock 80s ballads

I think that with musician types they turn to making music as their comfort and to express themselves after a tragedy.

SalmonEile · 11/09/2022 13:30

I’ve blocked it out but I think it was James Arthur and about meeting a girl with she’s puking and singing about how he’ll take their kids to school

I'm really no one to talk. I was an old school Goth who to this day still listens to the Sisters, the Cure, Dead Can Dance and the Smiths. I also like Radiohead. However ...

Pretty much all the Motown genre. I have a particular aversion to 'Chain Reaction'.

I quite like ABBA in small doses but some of their songs have a very melancholy edge and I can see why they'd be seen as maudlin.

George Michael had a voice like an angel but most of his music made me want to slit my wrists. Including Young Guns and Club Tropicana.

And the mere mention of Simon Cowell or Stock, Aitken and Waterman is enough to make anyone cry ...

I have similar tastes, I can happily listen to stereotypically "gloomy" music (goth, the Smiths, etc) but I find there is something sad in some stereotypically "happy" music like ABBA. I'm sure I once read something about ABBA's music being influenced by a type of swedish folk music that was very melancholy or had a mix of sadness and happiness. Even Steps had a surprising amount of sadness in their songs!
I personally think "Chain Reaction" could have been a better song if it had had a better singer.
