So am I being unreasonable?

Tried Lidl for the first time Wednesday, it's now Saturday and I have already had to throw 2 lots of fruit and salad stuff out!
What a waste of money.

Is this what Lidl is like? Seriously thought it would last longer than 2 days!

I went to Lidl yesterday for the first time as I was charging my car there.

I got some nice stuff. All looked fresh.

I got

Asparagus tips
Plums
Baby plum tomatoes
Two fresh from the bakery foccacia bread with tomato and goats cheese
Two sandwiches
Pointed red peppers
Baby pointed sweet peppers

I am going to do my weekly shop there next Saturday when I will need to charge up again.

Don't do a weekly shop from there for fruit or veg.

Buy what you need every 2-3 days unless it is apples.

Even with onions and carrots you need to be careful with all supermarkets.

ive Always found Lidl one of the best for freshness. I hope you’re not going on use by dates though as they’re a load of rubbish, and the stuff is genuinely inedible

I dont bother with use by dates. I do care if it has gone mouldy within a day or two when i have bought from Lidl, it doesnt even look that fresh in the shop!

If anyone said their food from tesco was shit you'd get agreement and/or at least be believed.

For some reason if you say aldi or lidl food is shit/poor quality then people assume you are too fussy with dates unaware of the " system" or simply toostupid to shop properly and pick out your own food properly.

Its most bizarre tbh

I often read posts of Aldi fruit and veg not lasting long. Our nearest shop is an Aldi, and we have never had a problem with veg going off. We keep root veg in the cool garage, some fruit and more delicate veg in the fridge and some in the fruit bowl. If anything we sometimes find things like ready to eat mango and nectarines a bit on the hard side and need a day or two in the warm kitchen before being transferred to the fridge.

OoooohMatron · 29/01/2023 14:57

Not sure about Lidl but I really rate Aldi. I don't find the fresh stuff goes off and the meat is of the same quality as any other supermarket. Do people not realise that the same places supply to all supermarkets? A pack of chicken breasts from Sainsburys will be no different from Aldi! I don't eat crap, I mainly cook from scratch and never had any issues with Aldi.

Nsky62 · 29/01/2023 18:21

Aldi is very good, apart from clementines, buy them from Lidl, I hardly keep fruit and veg ( i buy Aldi frozen fruit) I use up too quickly.
last dodgy fruit sains grapes, yuk!
lidl is very good ( too small here), tho I do prefer Aldi, they seem to have more choice than they used, unless special dietary needs

chalkiegirl · 01/04/2023 10:04

I agree. I keep most fruit and veg in the fridge and find lots of their products of good quality and lots cheaper than the major British supermarkets. People who rubbish Lidl and Aldi must have very generous food budgets or are very fussy.

Nonsense
If veg goes off within 2 days, i don,t count that as fussy. Lidl is over half an walk away from me. Im not going down there every few days to top up veg. I get a box of fruit and veg delivered every week or two which is far fresher tastier and much better quality even if it might be wonky shapes

I have a Lidl near me and like it. I like their fish, most veg/fruit, herbs, yoghurt, cheese, canned/jarred stuff, pasta etc. Also the quirky bit where you can pick up random food bits depending on the theme for the week. Chilled pizza good.

It does irritate me that you can't search their website for specific items + prices, co-op can be like that too.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 01/04/2023 15:22

As with all supermarkets there is good and bad. I would never buy fruit and veg from Morrisons as they buy lower grade produce that does not last. You have to eat their carrots quick smart or they go black.
Some stuff in ALDI is good. Red potatoes is one. Cheaper than elsewhere. You just have to look.

Giggorata · 01/04/2023 15:39

I used to enjoy shopping for all the interesting foreign brands at Lidl.
They had a slogan for a while, “why not buy something you can't spell?”

I like it much less, now they're carrying more British brands.

Cathyt90 · 01/04/2023 16:11

I work in the fruit/veg supply chain for supermarkets. Morrisons categorically do not select lower grade produce, in fact their specifications are the among the most rigorous. They will reject poor quality produce from suppliers with no qualms.
