Lidl! Waste of money!

So am I being unreasonable?

Tried Lidl for the first time Wednesday, it's now Saturday and I have already had to throw 2 lots of fruit and salad stuff out!
What a waste of money.

Is this what Lidl is like? Seriously thought it would last longer than 2 days!

OP posts:
MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/09/2022 10:36

in fact it was on mumsnet that i heard about their donuts.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/09/2022 10:38

waitrose have the longest lasting salad bags ime
they probably have the best of everything, but the are far far more expensive than lidl

Caterina99 · 11/09/2022 10:44

More than happy with my lidl shopping! One or 2 things I have to buy somewhere else, but the money saved makes up for that. And I just bulk buy them monthly or whatever. Everything fresh we get in Lidl.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/09/2022 10:45

i am happy that less mumsnetters will shop there
i go there after work and want to make sure there is everything i need!
so thanks for this thread

Letsrunabath · 11/09/2022 10:50

I agree that their fresh items don’t last long, I use the green storage bags from Lakeland and they are amazing at extending the life of fruit and veg, I’ve currently got a 3 week old broccoli head still as fresh as the day I bought it. I was them out and reuse for a few months. Well worth purchasing.

boobot1 · 11/09/2022 10:54

Tesco and asda are by far worse quality

SamWidges · 11/09/2022 11:08

I've stopped shopping there now.

Used to shop there most weeks. But quality has dropped...particularly in store bakery (tasteless and oily) and fruit and veg (doesnt last beyond 2 days). Their voucher/loyalty scheme is pointless to me now after their recent change ( spend 250 in a month to get a 10% off within the following 7 days. Vouchers seem to be all about nuts, every week now).

Sticking with ASDA.

MintyGreenDreams · 11/09/2022 11:19

@Heyyebskeikwbevg you ate off meat instead of taking it back? More fool you

I don't think Lidl is the greatest shop to go with a list. I do think it's a good place to go without one just to pick up random interesting looking things that you don't have in every shop.

Yet, I do this every week for our family shop.

Think there might be some snobbery going on here. Fruit and veg aren't designed to last for ages. They can only do this thanks to chemicals and packaging.

I dont use Asda but Tesco quality is not worse than Lidl!
I only use Tesco for bits and pieces but even their yellow sticker stuff is far better than Lidl's normal fruit and veg and Lidl's mince is really bad. Only decent thing they do are some christmas things but even Tesco now does decent stollen bites!

I buy Little Gem lettuce from Waitrose in the knowledge they will ALWAYS last till at least 10 days after the best before date - giving us time to eat it (family largely non-lettuce eaters). It's got to be cheaper than buying stuff that doesn't last.

EverydayMusing · 11/09/2022 12:39

In the quest for good price-quality trade off, I’ve found the following:

— Good (and cheaper) at Aldi:
Butternut squash, aubergines, peppers, garlic, spring & normal onions, carrots, broccoli (hit & miss), baby avocados, potted herbs, plant-based/nut milks, grana cheese, mozzarellas, mature cheddar, fake berocca, high-end sausages, fizzy mineral water, fake San Pellegrino, fake coffee pods, free range eggs, tons of tomato, chick peas, lentils, high quality pasta, gnocchi, jarred olives

— Best & generally more expensive at Waitrose:
Steaks, chicken, asparagus & “fresh” non-peeled fruit & veg

— Cheaper & ok at Asda:
Butter, avocados, broccoli, baby spinach in salad aisle, garlic, cheddar, big standard fizzy drinks like coke

M&S bests:
— almost everything but way £££
Steak and berries best trade-off

A very interesting and informative thread.
I'm fortunate in having Waitrose a three minute walk away and M&S and Tesco a 4 minute 2 stop bus journey, door to door so I can shop daily. I never have food delivered preferring to see the choices and make my mind up on the day.
There was an article on the differences in quality between supermarkets early this year.
It's known that both in the UK and abroad, of the supermarkets, M&S have first pick, Waitrose next then Co-op, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Asda, Lidl.
Waitrose do have their own farms which provide certain produce and there are certain products such as Gold top Cornish milk and cheese whose makers only sell to M&S.
I do favour M&S and have very regularly shopped there for food and clothing for 62 years. The John Lewis/Waitrose partnership is very good but not the overall best imho.
Talking about own brand crisps (and I only like cheese and onion) Tesco's are bigger slices and have a better taste than Waitrose but I've not tried other own brands. Sainsbury's are the only shop I know in South Surrey who sell my favourite Branson fruity sauce and Demerara coated shortbread rounds...which reminds me to go there this week.

RaginaPhalange · 11/09/2022 14:40

I shop in either aldi or lidl and don't have this issue, the only thing I'm not keen on is their own brand cereals.

Coastalcreeksider · 12/09/2022 08:26

I've been shopping in Lidl and Aldi for donkey's years, I don't recognise half the problems with food going off that I'm reading on here.

I've only ever had one pack of chicken that went off and an out of date foccacia bread from Lidl and never had anything from Aldi.

I'm just lucky I guess.

ScottishLavender · 12/09/2022 08:59

If you're selective when shopping and don't just grab the first thing you see then you'll find it lasts longer. All of our fruit and veg comes from Lidl (apart from that which we grow ourselves) and we've rarely had a problem with it. I'm glad there's so many Lidl haters out there. Means it's less crowded in store when I go.

CrazyCatLover · 12/09/2022 09:15

I have also stopped shopping at Lidl. Find their fresh produce and meat not good quality. Had burgers grow fur on them one day post best before date… yuk.

xogossipgirlxo · 26/01/2023 21:58

Digging out old thread. Went to lidl yesterday and already got mouldy salad and sweet clementines🤮 Fucking ridiculous.

Seems to be a common problem and not just with Lidl. I've had the same issues with tesco & sainsburys. Shelves are getting emptier, could they be holding onto stock longer?

VanCleefArpels · 29/01/2023 09:32

Buy Stayfresh bags from Lakeland. Complete fane changer for keeping veg and fruit fresh.

But It's not new with Lidl, their fruit and veg have been horrible for as long as I can remember.

Cath667 · 29/01/2023 09:48

I love Aldi and Lidl. I save a fortune shopping there and for most things the quality is excellent. However their fruit and veg are awful. I never buy them.

Iwantabloodypizza · 29/01/2023 09:59

We use aldi but it’s at the end of our road so we only shop for 3 days.

I’ve been stung with their meat too many times, mince that goes green way before use by dates, chicken that does the same.

AnonymousPoster01 · 29/01/2023 10:55

Their fruit isn't worth the 20p saving over Sainsbury's or Tesco. I buy some things in their but the fruit can be rank. My son won't eat it now. It's all bruised apples and bannas a few days away from turning and bruised too. Most hints are price matched now and 20% fat mince is actually 20p cheaper in Sainsbury's. When I compare my shop it's not much price difference in sains or tesco or Asda

soboredtonight · 29/01/2023 13:07

I went to Lidl yesterday for the first time as I was charging my car there.

I got some nice stuff. All looked fresh.

I got

Asparagus tips
Plums
Baby plum tomatoes
Two fresh from the bakery foccacia bread with tomato and goats cheese
Two sandwiches
Pointed red peppers
Baby pointed sweet peppers

I am going to do my weekly shop there next Saturday when I will need to charge up again.
