My two year old, who usually is a very good sleeper, started having really unsettled nights a few days ago. Literally screaming and screaming for hours but I wasn't sure what the problem was. He's been co sleeping with me since which he doesn't usually do.

Then two days ago his throat started sounding a bit croaky and now he's completely lost his voice so it seems a sore throat is to blame. I've been giving Calpol and ibuprofen but it doesn't seem to be doing much he basically only sleeps at night through pure exhaustion after screaming in my arms for hours. He has spells during the day where he seems okay and happy but he's definitely grumpier/ clingier / not wanting to eat anything apart from little bits of fruit.

I wasn't worried and assumed it would clear up by itself in a few days after lots of TLC etc.. but he's just been crying and it seems there are now sores on his tongue and roof of his mouth Sad

Is this normal for a sore throat in a toddler or should I be taking him to someone? I feel so bad for him and don't know how to help.

He gets a bit warm to touch at night but no official temp so far fwiw.

I would be ringing 111 to get an out of hours appointment due to level of distress. Could it be HFM?

Dottysmum18 · 10/09/2022 16:20

Unfortunately sound like night terrors and yes go would be first port of call

He had that a few months ago and it presented entirely differently but appreciate it doesn't mean it's definitely not that!

He's not waking up from sleep, he's unable to go to sleep in the first place.

I would see your GP. It could be tonsillitis, it's very unpleasant.

Get his ears checked. Pain builds up when lying down.

KangarooKenny · 10/09/2022 17:59

Ring 111. He’s getting worse with the spots now appearing so you’d be wise to. Does sound like tonsillitis.

Take the poor little thing to OOH, he clearly needs to be seen!

MouthUlcers · 10/09/2022 18:51

Am going to run him to the OOH now
