First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

They have already announced that it will be a Bank Holiday so schools will be closed

LittleBearPad · 10/09/2022 11:11

Its an important moment - it should be marked. It will be good to be able to watch the funeral.

It's a bank holiday so schools will be closed regardless of if you want that or not

squashyhat · 10/09/2022 11:12

What you want doesn't really figure I'm afraid.

Snowdropsarelovely · 10/09/2022 11:12

It's a historical national event- of course schools should close!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 10/09/2022 11:12

I’m only glad because I work in central London and it will be rammed, so I’d rather not go in. I’d happily teach online, or in person if I worked somewhere else.

As it is, I shall enjoy the lie in.

howshouldibehave · 10/09/2022 11:12

I don’t understand your post. It’s already been announced it’s a bank holiday-you can dislike it if you want, but it’s not your decision to make. There will probably be one next year for the coronation as well.

EssentialGarage · 10/09/2022 11:12

Apparently it is too much to ask what day this will be.

RoseAndRose · 10/09/2022 11:13

They've just announced a Bank Holiday, so lots of people will be off work

(So I hope you can find somewhere you can park your DC for the day if you have to go in to work - perhaps trade favours with parents of their friends?)

QuebecBagnet · 10/09/2022 11:13

I disagree. Everyone should have the opportunity to watch the funeral inc teachers

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 11:13

Its a bank holiday now and its one day , always likely to of been this way
Its no big deal one day , many many people take kids out for holidays etc

Aprilx · 10/09/2022 11:13

The Queen would have played a big role in planning for this occasion and I expect she knew very well that there would be a public holiday / schools closing.

NiceTwin · 10/09/2022 11:14

Although it will be sad, I love pomp and ceremony and would like to watch it, so thankful of a bank holiday.

TeenDivided · 10/09/2022 11:16

I would think it highly inappropriate if they kept them open.

madnessitellyou · 10/09/2022 11:17

It's a moment of historical significance. Living history. This hasn't happened for 70 years. My late father was in his early 20s when this last happened: he died at the age of 90, just to put that in perspective.

Dd2, who loves history, is asking question after question. What we can't answer we look up and she's doing the same. I'd much rather my dc be at home to watch this should they chose to because as far as I'm concerned, it's all part of their education as citizens of the UK. And I want to watch it too: I'm a teacher.

gingercat02 · 10/09/2022 11:17

Jeeze it's only a day. It's living history and constitutional significance. I'm no royalist but the occasion needs to be marked.
Also I'm getting a day off (NHS) I'm a big fan of bank holidays 😂

HappyHappyHermit · 10/09/2022 11:18

All of these decisions will have been made with her knowledge and approval. I am glad I will be able to spend the day with my child and see it as an important mark of respect for The Queen.

Iknownothing · 10/09/2022 11:18

Of course it will be a bank holiday whether you’re a monarchist or not this is a massive event in our country history. If they were in school they would probably stop to watch the funeral anyway.

Notme1980 · 10/09/2022 11:20

Thanks all.

this I had not given due consideration to, noted. And I take it on board.

I don't think you understand what the Queen would have wanted. You forget that these plans were made when she was alive.

Also, doing the maths, when will we next have a monarch who reigns as long as this one? The king is nearly 74, he won't be reigning 70 years. Hopefully 25 as they seem a long-lived family. William's 40 so with any luck, he'll be headed towards 70. George is, what, 9 so again barring accidents and illnesses he'll be 50+.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 11:21

Can't win can they ?
If they hadn't done this they would have been criticized.

KnickerlessParsons · 10/09/2022 11:22

They'll be closed again for the coronation. Will you complain then too?

toooldtodate · 10/09/2022 11:22

Having your kids home isn't likely going to make it easier to watch though is it? - i can understand the sentiment behind it but the schools could have put screens up in the hall to watch it and spent the day learning about the queen etc and her legacy - there are more fitting ways to spend the day than closing

Plumbear2 · 10/09/2022 11:23

Thankfully it's not your decision to make.

Slushycuppa · 10/09/2022 11:23

It's better that it's a Bank Holiday effectively forcing everyone to close. Instead of the whole 'schools might shut but other places can choose what to do'. The latter would've ended up with parents being forced to work with no childcare.
