Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

The same Queen who was happy for the country to have a four day weekend to have a party for her Platinum Jubilee would suddenly be averse to anyone having time off work on her behalf?

Tigerstripes1 · 10/09/2022 11:59

Frustrating for me if it is the 19th, I'm a nurse and I'm at work. My childcare is also in healthcare and is also working so I was relying on school! Not sure what I will do now.

So what happens will they have to make the day off up somewhere else? As now they're missing yet another day of school... they've already missed enough of school over the past few years!

Of course they won’t have to ‘make the day up’ somewhere else. It’s one bank holiday-the world will keep moving.

There will almost certainly be another next year for the coronation.

Cornettoninja · 10/09/2022 12:01

Ah yes, these pesky royals throwing around public holidays like sweeties when one of them has a once in a lifetime event. Gits.

I can’t wait for the tories to dismantle working rights and put an end to all this frivolity and laziness.

Hmm
YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 10/09/2022 12:01

Thank goodness.

I want my DD to be able to watch the funeral. It's a historical event!!

Having your kids home isn't likely going to make it easier to watch though is it? - i can understand the sentiment behind it but the schools could have put screens up in the hall to watch it and spent the day learning about the queen etc and her legacy - there are more fitting ways to spend the day than closing

Well yes of course it would be easier to watch. Especially for school staff.
What is the receptionist meant to do but a screen up?

There is no point going in to watch the funeral on a scabby screen sat on a hard floor or chair.

plantseverywhere · 10/09/2022 12:03

I personally don’t like the idea of schools closing. Yes, it’s one day, but there are children all over the country for whom school is the place they’re safe and they get a guaranteed meal.

I’m a teacher and I have children in my class and my class last year who I know will be in less safe environments than they are at school.

Again, it’s only a day. But still.

sashh · 10/09/2022 12:03

I am not a royalist.

I'm visiting my dad this week who is, I'm getting fed up of the coverage and I want to see a republican interviewed.

Having said all that.

This is big. It is part of history and as many people as possible should be allowed to mark it as they choose.

For most people this will be a once in a lifetime event.

FarmerRefuted · 10/09/2022 12:05

I hope they add some sort of commemoration bank holiday as a permanent fixture as its a long time from August Bank Holiday to the next bank holiday at Christmas, we could use an autumn bank holiday to break it up.

Would you normally work on a bank holiday?

How do you know your work isnt cancelled, and clinics and appointments aren't cancelled.

Obviously depending on your work it may not be cancelled. But how do you cover childcare normally when it's a bank holiday if you're working?

Oysterbabe · 10/09/2022 12:06

I would like my children to watch it so I'm glad.

Sockwomble · 10/09/2022 12:06

Ds won't cope with anything different from normal on TV so we will be out as normal on bank holidays.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 12:06

It is a bit much they haven't had a republican on to speak , but I guess that's for the future.

Do you have a partner who could look after the children or a friend/relative?

I would rather one in November for armistice day.

Countryside is still open. We will be out where we always go.

cakeorwine · 10/09/2022 12:10

I am a staunch Republican but I will be watching the funeral - it is a historic event.

So good to have a Bank Holiday.

I agree, which will cost the economy more. The cost of the BH is usually off set by increased spending but if everywhere is shut there will be no where to spend.

I work my shifts around my Mums as I'm a lone parent and we are both front liners so no chance of our work being closed. Occasionally I do a half shift and use breakfast club and finish in time for school pick up which is what has happened here. Even Christmas day my Mum will work the morning shift and I do the afternoon to cover the childcare.

peachescariad · 10/09/2022 12:11

NiceTwin · 10/09/2022 11:14

Although it will be sad, I love pomp and ceremony and would like to watch it, so thankful of a bank holiday.

Agreed...me too. Love all the ceremonial pageantry and tradition Makes me very proud to be British.
But then I am anyway.

CheesusWept · 10/09/2022 12:11

Doesn’t bother me if schools close, but my DD was due to go on a 2 night school residential on the 19th, so I’m wondering what will happen with that.

ImAvingOops · 10/09/2022 12:12

I'm a bit torn. It's difficult for those parents who will still have to work but who no longer have childcare because school is closed.
But otoh, it is an important occasion and should be marked.
