Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

They have already announced that it will be a Bank Holiday so schools will be closed

Where? Nothing official has been announced yet afaik?

CaptainMerica · 10/09/2022 11:48

Schools don't always shut for a bank holiday, do they? Mine (scotland) reopen after the easter holidays on Easter Monday last year.

I imagine they will shut, but any interest my children have in the event will be satisfied in 5 minutes. My work will likely add the day to my annual leave (as they do with all bank holidays), and I'll save it for xmas.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/09/2022 11:49

I’m pleased it’s a BH, I wfh but know I’d have done very little (apart from watch the telly) so better for me not to have to. That said, I totally understand that for a fair few people it will cause inconvenience.

I plan to sit on the sofa for numerous hours with tea, biscuits, cake and bacon barms.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 11:49

It was approved by the King and the privvy council today : approved !

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 10/09/2022 11:49

I do wish people would stop saying that “they’ve already announced that” and “the funeral is going to be on x date” they (whoever this “they” is) haven’t announced anything. And the daily mail is not an official source.

FetlocksBlowingInTheWind · 10/09/2022 11:50

They've announced that the day of the funeral will be a bank holiday, just not confirmed the day.
But it's looking like Monday 19th.

Comedycook · 10/09/2022 11:50

It's one day. I'm not a fan of schools closing when they should be open since covid but honestly I can't get worked up about this.

peasandcarrrotttss · 10/09/2022 11:51

Yes it has. By Charles.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 11:52

It was approved by the King and the Privvy council earlier on today ! I declare a bank holiday

peasandcarrrotttss · 10/09/2022 11:52

It's a huge moment in history and a lot of people will want to be a part of it or be able to watch it from home.

It's one day to mark an incredible woman who gave her whole life to this country and it's people.

Darbs76 · 10/09/2022 11:52

Of course they will be closed. I’m taking my daughter up to London for the funeral. It’s a moment in history and we want to pay our respects. It was always going to be a bank holiday, rightly so.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 10/09/2022 11:53

I wish people would stop speaking like they knew her “I believe she would have just pressed on” “this isn’t what she would have wanted” … you know fuck all about the woman, never mind the protocol behind her death and events following it.

blackbird77 · 10/09/2022 11:53

If it’s declared as a legal bank holiday then of course schools will be closed. Schools are always closed on a bank holiday. All schools have to provide children with 190 days of schooling and staff 5 inset/training days.

If the government grant the country this extra legal bank holiday on Sept 19th, every employee has a legal entitlement to it (though the extra day might be taken at another time in the year or as compensatory pay depending on the employer and industry). School staff are entitled to one extra day off this academic year because of the granted bank holiday (just like everyone else in the country is) so regardless if was taken on Monday 19th or on some other date, staff (and therefore children) would be off school one extra day this year. It’s directed by the government and employment law.

Sirzy · 10/09/2022 11:53

If it hasn’t been declared a bank holiday DS would have been at home anyway. A major historical moment that he wants to watch I’m not going to stop him

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 10/09/2022 11:53

There was no way to organise an event like this at such short notice without it causing loads of inconvenience and fucking some people over, unfortunately. I have no respect at all for the monarchy, but it's about logistics. For that reason though, we need the date. People are understandably worried about their operations, chemo, weddings, how they'll manage the childcare.

On a purely selfish level it suits me, and I'm pleased my DC won't have to spend the day in school getting the whole circus shoved down their throats. But I'm off sick at the moment anyway and likely still will be next week, so am in a privileged position wrt childcare.

That's going to take a LOT of getting used to. The King. Kings are things of childrens stories & history!

GoneWithTheWine1 · 10/09/2022 11:54

So what happens will they have to make the day off up somewhere else? As now they're missing yet another day of school... they've already missed enough of school over the past few years!

Unforgettablefire · 10/09/2022 11:54

It's one day. And a massive day in history, as a forces family you should be appreciating what that day is for.
The queen gave more than 70 years of her life serving our country and you begrudge one day?

GoneWithTheWine1 · 10/09/2022 11:55

Also my DS is due a really important hostipal appointment on the 19th so what now? Does that get cancelled? Yet again? Envy

But they HAVE announced it's going to be a BH. They announced it this morning. They haven't confirmed the date yet but it obviously going to be a week day or they wouldn't have bothered to announce a Bank Holiday (Banks traditionally not open on Saturdays or Sundays). Therefore, schools WILL be closed on the day of the funeral

neverbeenskiing · 10/09/2022 11:56

It's a bank holiday. They don't have to "make it up".

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 11:56

At least those that are against the monarchy can do something else. I know it's not ideal though.

whynotwhatknot · 10/09/2022 11:57
