AIBU?
Casual swearing in office
Ginandpink · 09/09/2022 23:19
Colleague just randomly shouted “you bitch” at their computer. Aibu to think this isn’t really appropriate?
Am I being unreasonable?

Is it a closed office? Can customers/ members of the public hear?
It doesn’t create a nice office environment when people shout and get angry.
I’d probably just say ‘what, me?’ and ignore the temper tantrum
XenoBitch · 09/09/2022 23:25
Was their computer upset by this? Did their computer put in a complaint?
Tiani4 · 09/09/2022 23:26
Nope we wouldn't be allowed to swear like that in the office
But then I'm
NHS/ social care
If it offends you have a word with your manager who will ask her to tone down language
Ginandpink · 09/09/2022 23:26
Lol fair enough. It was a male colleague btw. I’ve always found that word a bit aggressive when used by men to refer to women
Tiani4 · 09/09/2022 23:28
I appreciate other offices and work environments might be different but aggressive language and swearing in our office (unless someone has just dropped a heavy item in their foot!) really isn't ok
It's either a professional environment or it's not
TheSmallAssassin · 09/09/2022 23:28
I think "you bitch" is NSFW and pretty unprofessional. I would be nipping it in the bud if one of my team did that.
Tiani4 · 09/09/2022 23:29
Oh that's really not ok. Sorry but a male worker shouting out ' you bitch' will never be ok
Ginandpink · 09/09/2022 23:30
I’m actually surprised people are justifying this 😂
Louisa259 · 09/09/2022 23:32
some people like myself wouldn’t bat an eyelid. Unfortunately I’m a casual swearer too.
Others wouldn’t be ok, and if you’re not let them know.
charliee112 · 09/09/2022 23:34
Jeez, NHS admin and we swear a lot worse than that and often.
Davros · 09/09/2022 23:34
I'm a hard core swearer and would not consider "bitch" swearing. However, it's an unpleasant word and a male shouting it out in a shared environment is totally inappropriate
Ginandpink · 09/09/2022 23:35
I’m fine with fuck, even cunt (also used today!) but to describe a man by another man, anything else I’m genuinely fine with. But bitch just made me uncomfortable. It felt so needlessly aggressive and targeted?
solvendie · 09/09/2022 23:38
Non-personalised, non-discriminatory swearing would not be loved in an office but could be accepted if it is not aimed at anyone (shit, fuck, bollocks, bugger) However, ‘You Bitch’ suggests otherwise and suggests it is aimed at someone/something. This is unacceptable.
KeyboardCat · 09/09/2022 23:47
NHS admin here, I called my computer a 'useless wankshaft' because it wasn't doing what I wanted.
But then my colleague once told me I had a 'fanny like an empty headlock' so it's pretty usual here :)
Tiani4 · 09/09/2022 23:55
I'm sure there will lots of PPs and MNers that will regale us with lots of sweary words they and others say in the office
I'm a manager in NHs/ social care
None of my previous managers would have been happy nor would I be witnessed a man calls his computer a bitch or anyone using C you next Tuesday word or anything like that
Nor am I happy to hear other swearing . Not in the office nor phone calls nor in clinic
Unless it's a knee jerk response to hurting yourself accidentally, then nope ..not what happens in a professional environment
twoandcooplease · 09/09/2022 23:56
I don't like 'butch' either. There's something I find very nasty about the word. But at a computer I wouldn't have a problem
Florenz · 09/09/2022 23:57
It depends on the culture of the office where you work. I've heard far, far worse in my current workplace. In past workplaces any type of swearing was frowned upon.
twoandcooplease · 09/09/2022 23:57
Fuck sake... obviously meant 'bitch' and my phone doesn't like it either so changed it to butch
RootinandTootin · 10/09/2022 00:00
You’re all adults I presume and it’s a private office with no customers. It’s not even that bad of a swear word and was obviously born out of frustration of technology and wasn’t directed at a person. I wouldn’t give a shit and I find it a bit weird/old fashioned anyone would have an issue.
HollaHolla · 10/09/2022 00:00
I’ve got a mouth like a docker’s navvy. Today, I probably said fuck about 20 times, damn & bugger about the same. However, it wasn’t directed at anyone - more that something went wrong, and I responded ‘oh fuck fuck damn, bugger and fuck’. (Or something along those lines…)
i wouldn’t say it to a client, customer, student.
but, even my mother (and late granny) gave up on chiding je for my potty mouth.
Givenupgivingashit · 10/09/2022 00:01
I'm a nurse. Swearing is mandatory when not patient facing
Ginandpink · 10/09/2022 00:01
Sorry I don’t mean to drop feed but I presumed it was directed at an email or person popping up on the screen? Why would you call a computer a bitch?
Ginandpink · 10/09/2022 00:02
Hmm I’m not old fashioned just the only female in an office of self declared alpha females and sometimes the sweating verges on aggressive
