Colleague just randomly shouted “you bitch” at their computer. Aibu to think this isn’t really appropriate?

OP posts:

Lol fair enough. It was a male colleague btw. I’ve always found that word a bit aggressive when used by men to refer to women

Have you asked the computer if they identify as female?

etulosba · 10/09/2022 07:13

I’m fine with fuck, even cunt (also used today!).

Then stop moaning. I worked in an office where a colleague was sent home for using the latter.

Sux2buthen · 10/09/2022 07:13

Any chance the computer/ email sender/ content was in fact a bitch?

Doublevodka · 10/09/2022 07:16

Givenupgivingashit · 10/09/2022 00:01

I'm a nurse. Swearing is mandatory when not patient facing

Same here. It’s the only thing that gets me through the day at the moment.

hop321 · 10/09/2022 07:17

I hardly swore until I started work at an investment bank full of posh boys who went to Eton, Harrow, Charterhouse etc. Everyone swore constantly and, consequently, it's become a bad habit of mine.

They wouldn't have used the c word or bitch though. I think that crosses a line.

Oysterbabe · 10/09/2022 07:22

Our office is very, very sweary. It's a difficult job and I have a good relationship with my colleagues. It's just letting off steam.

Pipersouth · 10/09/2022 07:26

I was told at interview that swearing happened often and was I ok with that. Never heard the c word though but regularly heard lots of others. It’s never used as a weapon against someone though that would cross a line - computer yes!

maddiemookins16mum · 10/09/2022 07:27

We have a very sweary office, never heard the C word but Fuck is very common.

LaForza101 · 10/09/2022 07:29

It wasn't targeted at anyone. Tech issues are very frustrating, swearing happens - I would move on personally

BrokeAsABone · 10/09/2022 07:33

Oh good grief why are people going on about the computer? THINK! He was obviously reading an email from a woman and calling her the name! OP I wouldn't like this and would report him. Can't stand rotten men who talk like that.

Randommother · 10/09/2022 07:36

I’ve been know to call my computer a bastard, although it’s usually a “complete useless fucking piece of shit bastard thing”…. I don’t think I’d notice someone calling their computer a bitch, or saying that in reaction to an email.

Mouk · 10/09/2022 07:43

You need to lighten up.

He said it to his computer, not you!

wheresmymojo · 10/09/2022 07:46

I swear like a motherfucker...

BUT not at someone.

So I agree that expressing loudly that someone is a 'bitch' even if they're not there is not acceptable and probably misogynistic

Badgirlriri · 10/09/2022 07:47

I’ve heard it all now 😂 offended because a man called a computer a bitch. Laughable!

how do people survive in the world?!

wheresmymojo · 10/09/2022 07:48

I think a lot of PP have assumed he was swearing at the computer (fair) but OP believes he was swearing at a woman who'd sent him an email...

Oh I thought he was shouting at his computer, not a woman?

SandieCollins · 10/09/2022 07:50

Tiani4 · 09/09/2022 23:26

Nope we wouldn't be allowed to swear like that in the office

But then I'm
NHS/ social care

If it offends you have a word with your manager who will ask her to tone down language

Blimey! My NHS offices were very sweary, I love a sweary office as long as it’s not overheard. It means people are relaxed and comfortable enough to let off steam and be themselves.

XtinaCaligulara · 10/09/2022 07:52

Yabu

Unless you work in a school or a church you need to unclench

That's not obvious at all. OP could not see the screen, she's invented half a scenario and offended herself

TorviShieldMaiden · 10/09/2022 07:56

I call my computer all sorts of things, frequently a cunt. My usually when working from home 😁

have you never sworn at an inanimate object, I thought everyone has sworn at a printer at some point.

35965a · 10/09/2022 07:56

It doesn’t bother me if it’s directed to objects due to frustration, like in this case. I remember once in the office the (usually) most mild mannered man calling the printer an arsehole once which made me laugh!

Maybe because most of the people posting before you posted BEFORE the many drip feeds when it wasn't going the OP's way???
PLUS swearing at a message, who no one knows (including the OP) who it was from... so what? It's no different to swearing because the computer was giving him the wheel.

KeyboardCat · 09/09/2022 23:47

NHS admin here, I called my computer a 'useless wankshaft' because it wasn't doing what I wanted.

But then my colleague once told me I had a 'fanny like an empty headlock' so it's pretty usual here :)

I need a job in nhs admin! I found my people 🤣

Yes, exactly.

My office is very sweary, and bitch is one of the politer names I’ve called my computer when it freezes/crashes/loses the spreadsheet that I’ve spent 2 hours working on/the bloody internet banking is playing up on pay day again

You should hear the names we call our printer.
