In a conversation this week with a very close family member.
One of her children loaned a piece of equipment to her sibling.
It was returned mouldy (water bottle had leaked, then long time in warm weather). In addition the tent pegs were "missing".
So, instead of trying to find the missing tent pegs, other child immediately gets on to Amazon to order new ones.
The mother was "outraged" first of all because no care or thanks had been shown at being able to borrow the article and secondly because, instead of finding the tent pegs, it was "easier" to get new ones.

I'd be cross about the mouldiness, but glad the pegs were being replaced asap.

Why would you be annoyed at someone purchasing new pegs to make sure there is a full, new set? That seems like just finding any excuse for being annoyed. It’s fair enough to be upset about the mouldy tent but the pegs thing is just stupid.

Sounds like someone who is just looking to be annoyed. Tent pegs are a ballache and they go missing so easily, I'd rather have a full set replaced than some missing or mismatched. And the water bottle... Meh shit happens. I'd be annoyed maybe over that, most decent people would offer to replace it.

Interesting replies.
Some people (who may belong to the demographic we are thinking about) think it is OK to lose stuff loaned to them, by their own carelessness.
Also interesting to think that tapping into Amazon solves all problems.

You are projecting. Who said Amazon solves all problems? If you lost something it’s common sense to replace it. How is that a bad thing?
What punishment do you think is sufficient for losing some tent pegs? Should they be dragged over hot coals? Put in the stocks for public flagellation?

Amazon doesn't solve all problems but it did solve the problem of missing pegs! It could also solve the mould problem if they by some treatment. Job done.

I'm slightly confused about who ordered the tent pegs

Amazon doesn’t solve all problems, but human error happens, if you lend something to someone you no something could happen to it, the main thing is tent pegs are easy to replace and the person who damaged them is replacing them.

You seriously are getting all lofty over tent pegs?!

Honestly get a life. Yes, I’d be irritated that care wasn’t taken and the pegs were lost. But they’re not a treasured heirloom or even an item of clothing or something similar.

Also - yes irritating about the water bottle, but again, it’s a water bottle. I assume these things were used either at a festival or camping holiday, prime places for things to go missing or get forgotten about in the mess.

And as you’re asking - yes I am the type of person who would replace something I’d lost or ruined. No I’m not the type of person to drive to somewhere it’s possible I post something and hunt for it, unless it was of sentimental or monetary value.

I don’t quite understand who loaned the tent to whom - or whether it’s any of the mother’s business.

That said, being odd about the tents pegs is a fuss over nothing. Being returned mouldy is awful though. But the person who loaned it should have impressed on the person who borrowed it how to care for it. Or not loan their stuff out at all.

Honestly - I actually wonder if people look for shit to get angry about.
