To think skin colour matters WAY more than people like to admit

I am involved in marketing campaigns - I won't say what because it's outing but let's say I recently worked on a campaign where the service being provided had absolutely nothing to do with race (so it wasn't makeup or hair for example).

Yet the vast majority that responded were people of colour (Same as the person featured in the ad) and it made me think how much your life chances are still dictated by your skin colour.

People like to consider race more than they like to admit even in spaces where it has nothing to do with anything, people just seem to feel more 'comfortable' with their own.

I felt for the first time in a long time my success will in part depend on my skin colour because for whatever reason the majority of white people that saw this ad decided it wasn't for them on the basis I'm someone of colour.

Please no arguments I'm looking for a mature conversation and if you find the topic sensitive you need not respond

Just looking for others experiences really

You’ve fed them and they’ve revealed their true colours so job’s a good ‘un 👍

No it’s just reassuring not to be woke

And racially speaking is exactly what it's about. What's difficult to understand about that.

You want to understand intersectionality too? You sound like someone who wants to learn. But I can see why people are skeptical about your intent.

Best go Google.

Thank you for the recommendation. I am keen to learn.

I think you are confusing me with someone else, I have explained the concept to someone else, I understand it perfectly

Not agreeing with you about the practical application and the impact of the concept in the UK is not the same as 'not understanding it'

Perhaps you struggle with people disagreeing with you

No not at all. Knock yourself out but I don't agree with your explanation and critique of it. Simply because it's got nothing to do with the white underclass and how poor they may be relative to Barack Obama.

I'm sure slaves that worked as house negroes (as described by MLK) we're fine as they lived infinitely better lives than the white underclass. Where was their privilege.

what is white privilege? I’m white. I’ve certainly not had a life of privilege

Absolutely unbelievable ignorance

No just fact.

Daydreamsinsantafe · 08/09/2022 00:35

@Sarah0611 are you mixed raced or are you white? You cannot be both. If you are white passing then how have you experienced racism when you were younger & why not now? Actually you mentioned you are ‘tanned’, a term I’ve never heard any mixed raced person use, so you are seemingly one of many. Perhaps for the purpose of being right on this thread.

People of colour suggests that everyone who is not white is one homogeneous group. For me it erases my blackness which is altogether different from being East Asian or Middle Eastern for example.

bellac11 · 08/09/2022 00:10

I dont agree with that.

The problem is that a lot of the descriptors and terminology around race and racism is from America and UK culture is nothing like American culture

There is racism here but its got a different theme, different outcome and our main issue in this country is firstly class, and secondly sexism.

So if you are part of the UK underclass, particularly with the peculiarly British anti aspiration, anti education perspective, the victim mentality - and then you're referred to as having white privilege because you're lucky enough to be white, it means nothing to you.

In this country a white woman, has more in common with a black woman, than either of the women have in common with their male racial counterparts.

I'm not sure I fully agree with this. When you're talking about UK based racism I think it is just as bad. I remember working in a shop in a predominantly white community and when they employed someone black someone came in and littered the shop with racist pamphlets. That's certainly not something I have to deal with as a white woman. But on top of that I think it's also important to recognise that so much of what white women have now has historically been built off the backs of women of colour, for example the feminist movement initially was very oppressive and fully geared up to meet the needs of white women only. Never mind the amount of wealth generated in the UK through slavery because while it was frowned upon here, it was used widely across the british empire. But all those people still profited just the same as plantation owners in the US did. I think culturally now, there's an emphasis on hidden racism and microaggresions that spreads across all classes and genders.

And if someone is say black or Asian, why do we have to pretend they aren't

I don't see why there's any pretending to be done; just not dwelling on it where it isn't necessary. If you're sending a visitor up to speak to Colin on the 6th floor, and Colin is the only black person on the whole floor, of course you would mention it as a simple way of helping to identify him. But, unless you had some bizarre hangup, you wouldn't say "I'm off on Friday, as I'm going to York for the day with my black friend Colin."

😂😂

You know you're in trouble when someone has to mention the colour or race of a person during conversation.

My MIL is racist AF and openly in front of me. I wonder if she thinks I'm white but have different eyes 🤦.

I know when I'm in for an eye rolling conversation when she starts with, "I was going to church and a bus load of black people turned up in bright clothing......." before telling a story where their colour and appearance was completely irrelevant to the anecdote 🙄. Sometimes they don't even feature as part of the story but are thrown in for good measure.

My dad is West Indian. I experienced racism when I was younger. Not now. Don’t know why? Maybe people just don’t ask me about my colour anymore. I don’t think about it really. Even when I was younger and people mentioned my darker colour. Wasn’t an issue. I accepted i looked different.

Goodness me. So your dad is West Indian and you can't empathise or understand the concept of white privilege. If he came over in the 60's I can imagine he's a few stories to tell.

@Sarah0611 so you aren’t white then? You’ve said you’re white several times.
Im mixed raced. Never have I referred to myself as white. You say you look mixed raced too so aren’t even white passing.
If you are in fact mixed raced I think you might have some issues to address.

I don’t think you understand your own messages to be honest. In some you’re white, in some you’re mixed, you insist white privilege doesn’t exist but I suspect you haven’t quite managed to grasp the concept of it. Who knows. Bed time maybe?

What do you mean? You're the one who's claiming not to understand white privilege.

Yet your dad is West Indian and you're mixed race. I'm just pointing out that I'm surprised we're even having this conversation.

Speaking of which, I'm off to bed. Don't forget to Google!

Daydreamsinsantafe · 08/09/2022 00:52

@Sarah0611 you’ve got a black stamp on your birth certificates? I feel cheated.

Nope! No issues to address here! My mum is white. Dad is mixed Carribean. My choice. I identify as white. That’s my choice! Dad is adopted by white parents. he also identifies as white.
