To ask why people vote Tory?

Tierne · 07/09/2022 14:25

It has to be said that life in the UK on low or middle income is much harder than it seemingly is in other western countries of similar wealth. I dont think the Tory party is making this country a nice place to live in at all. But they keep getting voted in.

So if you vote Tory:
Why do you vote for them?
Would you ever change your vote and for what reason?
Do you feel uncomfortable at how Tory policies batter the most vulnerable in our society? For example making it impossible for people to get on the housing ladder, high rents and low tenant protections, no energy bill caps, etc?

NB: I dont want this to turn into a Tory bashing thread. I'd just like to hear how Tory supporters feel about their party.

Freedomfighters · 07/09/2022 22:58

You mean you vote a certain way IN ORDER to piss the other side off? Not because you think the Tories or their policies are better? Just in order to upset people on the other side?

I find that so depressing - and I would say the same about people who vote Labour just to piss off the Tories.

Astounding that you actually took that literally 😂

Wisper10 · 07/09/2022 21:59

I voted for the Tories so that it would piss off the left wing whingers for the next 5 years.

It seems to have worked as the majority of them can't accept that we live in a democracy and keep bleeting on about it because they didn't get their own way.

Congratulations on making yourself easy to manipulate.

I was wondering whether to start a thread asking...

'why do people start threads - at least once a month - asking 'why do people vote Tory?' with a wide-eyed faux-innocence, and just genuinely wanting to know, and not being goady at ALL......' Hmm

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 07/09/2022 23:34

Florenz · 07/09/2022 21:38

The left needs to stop being so hectoring and abusive and come up with people to vote for it instead of just calling them stupid/evil for voting Tory.

This. ^ The problem is that they can't see how vile they actually are.

I'll repost this for all the single issue women's rights voters who may not have read my original. Your sex based rights were discarded by the Tory party. Please do not be fooled again.

Except they weren't discarded because Truss and Johnson decided not to implement self-id. Mrs May let women down badly on this yes. I can only assume she was distracted by that Brexit shambles.
Women's rights were an actual issue in the recent Tory leadership campaign. That was proof that finally people were realising the true safeguarding implications of what had happened 'under the radar' because of Stonewall etc.

Fififelix · 07/09/2022 23:48

Many traditionally labour supporters are socially conservative. The labour party is split between the old working class and the new "wokism" which many traditional labour voters don't care about. The labour party has hemorrhaged votes to conservative party because of this.

I think you are so very wrong here. Surely it's more like every week? 🙄

izimbra · 07/09/2022 21:24

Well - not that, clearly.

It's just out and out propaganda isn't it?

Is that what you read?

And the Guardian isn't propaganda in your view lol?

HRTQueen · 07/09/2022 23:57

Why do people vote conservative

well because the party itself is entrenched in British culture of persoanl responsibility and self reliance, free economy and less interference from central government should

the party will also change direction to suit what is politically better at the time, unlike labour who tend to be more entrenched in ideology

many believe the Tories to be the better party to manage the economy

there are doing someone right The Conservative Party is the most successful political party

Absolutely agree

Labour does not deal with what they do not wish to deal with its foolish to be so tied into ideology

Lalliella · 08/09/2022 00:00

Because fundamentally a lot of people are selfish, and vote only in their own interests, and don’t see the bigger picture.

I’m comfortably off and consider myself very fortunate, and are very aware that others aren’t so lucky. I’ve never voted Conservative, I vote for equality and fairness.

Wouldn't read the Telegraph or the Mail in the same way that I wouldn't read Pravda or the Socialist Worker.

Why would you contribute to the profits of the people who produce lying trash?

Well you say that, but people still read the Guardian, some people only read that.

They weren't discarded? How many male bodied folk were in single sex women's spaces (prisons, refuges, hospitals) in 2010? How many were there in 2019? How many fewer are there in 2022 since Truss and Johnson decided to do the sum total of nothing to fix it in the past three years.

The Tories don't give a shit about women they just say pretty words to whatever audience they're addressing, to get whatever they want.

Deeds, not words. The Tory Party's deeds have fucked women. Their words are lies.

LondonWolf · 08/09/2022 01:29

I have never voted Tory but find myself increasingly disgusted by the constant selfish/thick/racist descriptors. I judge those using them far more than Tory voters of whom I know a fair few and who are generally kindly normal people who love their families and work hard for them.

I'm politically homeless right now as I won't vote Tory but cannot vote for the shambles that is the current Labour Party.

It was Brown as chancellor that introduced the minimum wage.

At a very low level, though.

It’s the Conservatives who have chosen to increase it over the years by much more than inflation.

DdraigGoch · 08/09/2022 04:55

Hyperion100 · 07/09/2022 15:29

The good news is that "most" people dont vote tory.

Remember that Johnson won his 80 seat majority after winning only 44% of the vote.

"Most" votes went to centre left parties.

This is why we desperately need electoral reform and to ditch FPTP in favour of PR.

That cuts both ways, in 2005 Tony Blair had a 66 seat majority with only 35% of the vote.

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 05:09

The conservatives have increased the minimum wage because they have been in power for 12 years. Things are much more expensive now. You can't compare the wages from 12 years ago to now , it would have increased whoever was running the country.
I hope that those people who do vote conservative now realize the stitch up by them over the proposed fuel cap. If this was a Labour government doing this enormous borrowing and tax cuts and not taxing the energy companies instead with a windfall tax they would be hung out to dry and I speak as someone who isn't overly keen on any political party at the moment.
It'll be hailed as a great policy without exploring the alternatives , but we all will be the ones paying it back. The tax cuts will only ,mostly , benefit the rich too, but that is what the conservatives are about and making big businesses pay seems incomprehensible to them especially when your an ex employee of one of the biggest ones and set to make more money from being one of the shareholders ( Liz Truss)
Two former chancellors ( Phillip Hammond and Rishi sunak ) have warned these polices won't work and they understand a lot more about it than most people do.

No. I care about a lot of things. The erosion of women's rights. People starving / freezing. As well as lots of other things. It's entirely possible to be concerned about more than one issue. 😉

If you are voting Tory you don't care about people starving and freezing to death, no matter how much you tell yourself you do.

Using terfdom as a scapegoat is also unhinged too

FarFromHome2 · 08/09/2022 06:45

Yet I actively run local initiatives to help vulnerable people in my community.

What do you do? Apart from sit on line abusing people you don't agree with?

Using terfdom as a scapegoat is also unhinged too

This sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

You are not including the LIb Dems in your list of centre left parties are you ?

and many centre voters will sway from left to right hence why the Labour Party will not win an election if they stay to far too the left

BuenoSucia · 08/09/2022 07:29

It really demonstrates a sparkling lack of maturity to “hate” what you feel is the opposition. We ALL want a better society, we just differ on the route (I like the bus analogy). Whilst I’m a Tory member, one of my oldest friends is a labour councillor in London for whom many of you will have voted for. We disagree politically, but we both understand that our friendship is worth more.
