To ask why people vote Tory?

Tierne · 07/09/2022 14:25

It has to be said that life in the UK on low or middle income is much harder than it seemingly is in other western countries of similar wealth. I dont think the Tory party is making this country a nice place to live in at all. But they keep getting voted in.

So if you vote Tory:
Why do you vote for them?
Would you ever change your vote and for what reason?
Do you feel uncomfortable at how Tory policies batter the most vulnerable in our society? For example making it impossible for people to get on the housing ladder, high rents and low tenant protections, no energy bill caps, etc?

NB: I dont want this to turn into a Tory bashing thread. I'd just like to hear how Tory supporters feel about their party.

This is where decades of reading the Telegraph/Times/Mail/take your pick from vast swathes of Tory propaganda gets you. Living in some mad, deluded bubble

What reading material do you recommend then?

Well - not that, clearly.

It's just out and out propaganda isn't it?

Is that what you read?

I so wished that Andy Burnham was in charge of the Labour Party .
His marmite , most politicians are , but so much more personable than Sir Kier Starmer who will never be PM.

I disagree. He’s shoutier and more aggressive, that’s not necessarily a good thing. We haven’t seen much of Starmer yet because Johnson took all the bandwidth. I think he’ll come into his own now. It’s way too early to write him off. His policies are obviously good since the Tories are stealing them!

I read everything. So I can make a judgement across a large range of views.

How about you?

@MarshaMelrose i find that so difficult to understand given the fact the news cycle is currently dominated by the fact people are worse off than they were 10 years ago.

The rise in energy prices that has caused rises in prices generally are obviously leaving people worse off at the moment. But most voters that might vote Tory will ascribe a large part of it to circumstances beyond the govts control. How Truss deals with it will give people hope or not. And if she can sell hope for the future, she has a good chance of getting votes.

Wouldn't read the Telegraph or the Mail in the same way that I wouldn't read Pravda or the Socialist Worker.

Why would you contribute to the profits of the people who produce lying trash?

So what do you read then? Why so coy?

Florenz · 07/09/2022 21:38

The left needs to stop being so hectoring and abusive and come up with people to vote for it instead of just calling them stupid/evil for voting Tory.

Blossomtoes · 07/09/2022 21:33

You have your point of view which is why you don't vote Conservative. But others view things differently. This is a thread asking why people vote Tory, not why they shouldn't. And I'm just repeating Tony Blairs theory.

Cookiesareworthit · 07/09/2022 21:46

People are literally going to starve/freeze to death this winter and people in this thread are complaining about trans rights??!

The mind boggles....

MattDillonsEyebrows · 07/09/2022 21:47

I'm a floating voter, I've voted Tory in the past and will again. I think that voting for the same party every time is as daft as not voting at all and it's the floating voters that make the country a democracy. The nice thing about being a floater is that I could go either way at any time, and I always give the new person a chance whether I voted for them or not. I've actually warmed to Liz Truss over the first couple of days. Only time will tell if she does a good job or not.

But the thing about the left the annoys me the most, is the whinging, we have had the most diverse cabinets in history over the last few years, all Tory governments but it's still not enough. It like
"We need more people of colour"
"what?? Not Nadhim, he's a man!!"
"We need more women"
"eh? Not Therese! she's fat!"
"We need more women of colour"
"Duh! I wasn't talking about Kemi, I disagree with her!"

Now I would agree we need more people that have been to state school in government, but Gordon Brown, Margaret Thatcher, Harold Wilson, Edward Heath, all went to State school but we rarely hear about that as a way of encouraging kids into politics.

But as to why I would vote Tory again, (even though I think we desperately need a change of government and I would normally vote labour at the next election) is because, as for so many women is that only the Tories know what a woman is. Now, you'll get people saying (I'm sure it's been said already on here, not rtft) that there are much more important things at stake such as taxes, energy crisis and yes, those things are incredibly important but if a party can't sort out a fundamental issue that has grown far bigger than it should have because everyone has ignored it, then I have no faith in them to sort out the other issues.

Trans activism should never have got as far as it has, and the only reason it has is because it's men (TW) who are pushing it.

Wisper10 · 07/09/2022 21:59

I voted for the Tories so that it would piss off the left wing whingers for the next 5 years.

It seems to have worked as the majority of them can't accept that we live in a democracy and keep bleeting on about it because they didn't get their own way.

Iceballoons · 07/09/2022 22:00

I’ll probably vote Tory next time with Truss as PM. So far she seems to be making a lot of sense…..I will wait to see how things play out though.

No. I care about a lot of things. The erosion of women's rights. People starving / freezing. As well as lots of other things. It's entirely possible to be concerned about more than one issue. 😉

Scurryfunge12 · 07/09/2022 22:11

I’m always baffled when Tory voters can’t understand why the left is hostile towards the right.

It’s really not that hard to understand when the left/working classes are the ones that have to suffer as a result of Tory policies when a lot of the right couldn’t give a stuff.

It’s easy to understand why this annoys them, especially when a lot of the right seem to have very black and white thinking such as, ‘’If you can’t afford kids don’t have them’’ or ‘’If you’re struggling get a better job’’

And yes, I’m fully aware that some working class people vote Tory, I’m talking in general.

In my experience of the right there is never any nuance. The left are just scroungers and they never take different circumstances into account.

MiceMiceBaby · 07/09/2022 22:11

These sorts of threads actually make me want to vote Conservative more. Just spiteful ranting from lefty losers who are economically illiterate and want the government to do and fix everything for them. Well done! You’ve confirmed one Tory vote for the next election!

That isn’t true. Which is the most economically illiterate - borrowing at a time of increasing interest rates to pay for the energy price freeze or taxing the suppliers’ £170 billion profits? Now I haven’t got a degree in economics (my dissertation was on Jane Austen) but even I can work out that borrowing isn’t the smartest move. In fact, if Labour suggested it I expect you’d be jeering at them.

You mean you vote a certain way IN ORDER to piss the other side off? Not because you think the Tories or their policies are better? Just in order to upset people on the other side?

I find that so depressing - and I would say the same about people who vote Labour just to piss off the Tories.

the80sweregreat · 07/09/2022 22:42

Wes Streeting said the same. If this was a borrowing Labour Party policy they would be hung out to dry.

Minorities are welcome in the Tory party but only if they're loud and proud about being against any and all progressive policies.

If you are in the Tory party then it would make sense if you are in line broadly with Tory party policy.
