Extremely rude doctor

This is more of a vent than anything else.

In my GP practice you don't get a face to face, you get a phone call then a face to face if deemed necessary. That's fine, no issue with that.

You have to state what you are calling for to the receptionist so I stated stomach issues and period problems.

The doctor calls and asks how he can help.

I begin saying - I'm calling for Two things that may or may not be related.. one is a pain in my stomach, one is period pains.. he cuts me off right there and says .. I don't have time for a list of issues.

What's your stomach pain he asks - dull ache, coming and going, few centimeters to the right and below belly button, been going on few weeks. He says - it's just your bowels, it is very normal. I question that - I'm 36, never had this pain before.

Then I say - about my period - he goes - I don't have time to be talking about periods and all that, quickly give me the highlights. I could not believe the rudeness of him. Highlights - 12 days between a period, sometimes 7 weeks, extremely painful through to my back and bum - cannot physically move, blood clots, very heavy, would consider a hysterectomy it is that bad. (Took me about 30 seconds to give him that run down) Ok he says, i dont have time to deal with this today and you need to call back another day for a new appointment and request a female doctor.

I was gobsmacked at his rudeness. The phone call lasted under 5 mins. I understand they are under alot of pressure but his rudeness was terrible. I didn't realise you couldn't talk about 2 issues (that may be related) at the same appointment.

I actually think the series “Doc Martin” has a lot to answer for. I’m sure some of these GPs think it’s ok to be a surly, obnoxious arse because of that, but at least Doc Martin was really good at his job, which kind of made up for it. That’s unfortunately not the case with some of these rude GPs.

LittleMG · 06/09/2022 18:12

contact the local newspaper. Absolutely shocking. I’m so angry reading this!

Pretty sure Doc Martin won’t be driving force for rude doctors 😂

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 06/09/2022 18:12

I had a similar experience when I made an appointment to discuss a gynaecological issue. The male Gp said ‘I just don’t have time for this today, I have a big list of people to call’. I wish I had complained, the receptionist had told me it was the doctor I needed to speak to. Makes me so angry. Please complain.

DonnaBanana · 06/09/2022 18:13

you need to call back another day for a new appointment and request a female doctor.

I'd report him not necessarily for the rudeness but for not being qualified to be a GP. He can't pick or choose who he treats.

Slippersue · 06/09/2022 18:13

But if you have an ear infection and an ingrowing toenail, they both need sorting anyway. Ridiculous to think you can only raise one thing.

ethelredonagoodday · 06/09/2022 18:13

I'm generally one for supporting the NHS and doctors, but he sounds like an absolute arsehole!

Hambledy · 06/09/2022 18:14

What is the point of a doctor who says he doesn't have time to do any activity related to being a doctor?

I bet he has time to spend his wages.

Definitely complain.

ethelredonagoodday · 06/09/2022 18:16

And also think that if you'd gone in with two totally unrelated issues then possibly he had a point, but the two issues you raised could be linked?!

MsRosley · 06/09/2022 18:18

Yes, I immediately thought endometriosis. The two could very well be connected. He's an ignorant arse.

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 18:19

Complain. Ask for a double appointment, stating that you have a couple of issues which the previous GP was so rude about.

Antarcticant · 06/09/2022 18:20

It annoys me this 'one thing at a time' business. How is the layperson supposed to know whether symptoms are linked? Fair enough if it's 'I think I've sprained my ankle and by the way, I've got ear-ache' but when you're talking about aches and pains and gynae stuff, surely you need to give the full picture? If you knew whether they were linked, you'd be the doctor, not the patient.

Arou · 06/09/2022 18:22

That’s so awful. I’d be tempted to report him.

moaninggiraffe · 06/09/2022 18:10

Are the calls recorded? My surgery records all calls for training purposes. I would complain. Some doctors really should not be doctors, I don't understand why he became a GP if he didn't want to deal with "female issues" I don't get the 1 appointment for one thing argument. He might be right about it being your bowels, but it also could be endometriosis that can appear on your bowel and cause symptoms. He hasn't examined you, or actively listened to any of your symptoms Confused

@moaninggiraffe I'm not sure if calls are recorded. They don't state that calls are recorded. I will find out tomorrow when I call back for a female.

Terribly rude of the Doctor. Even if he was absolutely pushed for time there is absolutely no way you should have been spoken to like that. Upon reading ofm your abdominal pain, I immediately wondered if uo

you may have a grumbling appendix. My mum had her appendix out when I was a child and she said the pain was abdominal but to the right and below the belly button. Ask for an appt tomorrow. Could be anything but no way should you have been dismissed out of hand . Good luck 🤞

Almost certain they will be

passport123 · 06/09/2022 18:25

This isn't on and I say that as a GP. Formal complaint to the practice. Calls likely recorded.

How long have you been having these symptoms?

Luminousnose · 06/09/2022 18:30

Shocking treatment (and I work in a GP surgery).

(1) Outrageous to refuse to treat ‘wimmins problems’.

(2) Yes, it’s normally one problem per appointment, but as PPs have said these could well be connected. Plus phone appointments tend to be a bit more flexible and presumably if you then needed to be seen a double appointment could have been booked. There’s usually a tiny bit of ‘give’ in the system too, so if one call takes a bit longer, it’s usually balanced by another that takes 20 seconds. Plus if it really runs over, there’s often another slot that can be blocked for catch up. Some days of course, they do just run way over schedule - comes with the territory I’m afraid.

I’d complain.

User354354 · 06/09/2022 18:31

I wouldn't even say this was rude.

It was completely neglectful and offensive. You need to take this further

vera99 · 06/09/2022 18:31

BBC reporting that IDS turned down a position - so a back bench carper who knows when to stay out of a shitshow.

diddl · 06/09/2022 18:32

Things will continue to be stretched though if a Dr cba to listen & tells you to make an appointment with someone else.

What a fucking waste!

vera99 · 06/09/2022 18:32

Oops wrong thread....

hotdiggetydog · 06/09/2022 17:08

At our practice its an an appointment per issue so he's right to get frustrated. But agree he was wrong to speak to you how he did

Completely agree one issue per appointment. However in the ops case, it's not a huge stretch to assume they could be related and relevant to a successful diagnosis

Lipsandlashes · 06/09/2022 18:34

Complain complain complain. Complain to the Practice Manager and complain to CQC if you don’t get anywhere. Some GPs are not fit for the job they are in and cannot keep getting away with treating their patients like shit, all while doing the bare minimum of work.
