Or is this lyric not suitable for radio 1?

Listening to Radio 1 yesterday around 8:20, Greg James show, lots of listeners calling in saying it was first day of the new school year.

Little Nas X - industry baby
And these girls know that I'm nasty (mm)
I sent her back to her boyfriend
With my handprint on her *

The blanked out part is ass cheek.

Personally, I don’t think this is an appropriate lyric ever, it normalises sexual domestic violence. But on Radio 1 during the school run time is totally not ok, they know young children listen to the show. Yes parents can switch it off, but by the time you have realised it is inappropriate the lyric has been sung.

So AIBU?

You are bing unreasonable: it is just a song
You are NOT being unreasonable: inappropriate lyric for that time and show

It's conditioning children. No 2 ways about it in my opinion.

That Take my Breath song by The Weeknd about strangling a woman during sex, is played everywhere! Not so much now thank god, but it's even on the bloody Peleton advert.

Considering the number of women who have been strangled to death and men have used the 'breath play/rough sex', excuse, I think it's fucking disgusting.

lailamaria · 06/09/2022 12:15

god my mum played jason derulo on the way to school when i was like 5, i have 3 older sisters who's playlists were almost all exclusively rap, i didn't know what the hell the lyrics were talking about till i was about 13 please get over yourself it's a song, not a satanic ritual and it certainly isn't promoting domestic violence

I can find absolutely no evidence that More than Words is meant to be about that, so I wouldn't worry - any quotes from Extreme all talk about it being about the fact that its easy to say the words "I love you" but its your actions that show that you mean it. Zero mention of blow jobs or sex.

Me either

Written by Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, this song is about a guy who loves a girl and knows she loves him too, but he wants her to show it by more than just saying "I love you." He's saying that if she would show him more affection and emotion she wouldn't have to say she loves him because he would already know.

I don’t have children yet but I do agree a lot of songs these days are inappropriate (especially the music videos). I would suggest listening to Heart as their songs are more child friendly or a playlist.

It doesn’t bother me being 27 year old woman but I can see your point a lot of popular music right now is sexualised (personally do not think the song you said about hints DV at all but it is about sex) like the above comments say there is a song by Nicki M about licking riding and sliding etc lol

I don't think Heart escape with purity rings either, I'm afraid.

All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You. In which a married woman picks up a hot young male hitchhiker and shags him bandy in order to get pregnant. When she sings 'He brought the woman out of me/So many times, easily' she's not singing about going out dancing.

Alone. Open to some interpretation, but there's definitely a read in which a woman masturbates while fantasising about her lover.

Barracuda. A 'fuck you' response to some dickhead who accused Ann and Nancy Wilson of incest.

Nothing new under the sun, etc.

Now I understand why there has been a rise in children wanting to mop floors after WAP was released...

MorrisZapp · 06/09/2022 12:18

Most songs are about love/sex, and getting high etc. Which is fine if euphemistic language is used, but if it's explicit then it's not suitable for kids.

Sure, loads of songs are about drugs but it's hardly a problem if kids sing along with 'it's all too beautiful' or 'I'm coming up so we'd better get the party started' etc because these are innocuous phrases.

You can interpret lyrics to mean almost anything, but it only worries me when it's openly adult in nature. Gold Digger is my nemesis song.

MarbleGolden · 06/09/2022 12:20

@nutellachurro now that did make me LOL I'll give you that.

I grew up idolising xtina, girls next door (playmates) etc and I do think it had an effect, I wanted to look slutty and overly sexualise myself.

When you're surrounded by lyrics like that, it corresponds to porn and teenagers are loosing their virginity whilst being strangled etc. Thinking it's completely normal.

I know I have a point.

It's a bit chicken and egg though

Do artists dictate fashion and cultural norms, or do they dress in modern fashion and sing about things that impact them?

MarbleGolden · 06/09/2022 12:25

@nutellachurro I personally think they dictate fashion, defiantly for the younger ones. Somethings only cool if a teens idol represents it.

The lyrics for 212 are outrageously rude

I don’t think it’s appropriate to drop the N word in to pop songs either

Meh . I here it almost every song I listen to .
Barely even notice it tbh.

Certainly not something to make aa fuss about

I think they meant Heart FM. But impressive analysis!

Where’s Frankie goes to Hollywood when you need them eh!

I wonder how many of those complaining about the song being played on the radio because of the lyrics also supervise what their kids watch on TikTok and YouTube because I can guarantee that it’s far, far worse.

Absolutely, my DS is only 8 but he's not allowed on normal YouTube or tiktok (some of his friends are, at 8?!??) and he has age restricted apps only on his iPad. I'm really strict, much to his annoyance.

constantsky · 06/09/2022 12:43

I'd suggest the pearl-clutchers here take a look at the Industry Baby music video 🤭

CornishGem1975 · 06/09/2022 12:45

I've no problem being slapped on the arse by my (clearly misogynistic) DH but do agree, it probably has no place being on the radio.

This is the sign you need to migrate over to Radio 2, this is how it starts!

You could be humming along to Texas with the flick of a switch and not have to worry about who's singing about who's smacking who's arse and why.

I'm a step wirse. My car radio only plays LBC & Magic 🤣🤣

since the Dawn of time, songs have had underlying meanings, as children (& adults) we've sung along to them without thinking about the lyrics.

@SkygardenTower Have you seen the iceberg in titanic? That's the scale of the issue this is. If you're bothered, look under the waterline.

aSofaNearYou · 06/09/2022 13:03

Pop music in general is very explicit these days, this isn't even a particularly bad example of it so YABU to single it out.

I also think the fact that it happened to be the school run is incidental. It's also when most adults are going to work, and radio 1 is not targeted towards children.

I do wish pop music was less explicit, primarily because the constant dips in audio for censorship are jarring to listen to on the radio. But I don't think you can realistically expect them to cater to kids.

gogohmm · 06/09/2022 13:04

Look at the words to Delilah- makes you just think why ?

Mumoblue · 06/09/2022 13:16

I don’t get the point of listening to something that’s not for kids (general radio) and complaining it’s not for kids.

Rap isn’t my thing, personally, but my parents are into all sorts of music, mostly metal- I managed to grow up fairly normal despite listening to the odd naughty word.

I think you’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

Look at the words to Delilah- makes you just think why ?

Because most songs, both now and back in time (folk, balladeers, songstrels, music hall, vaudeville etc) are about tales. Tales of heroism, politics, love, sex, tragedy etc etc

The problem is now that those subjects are sung quite explicitly and viewed as 'for kids' when of course their adult composers and performers are not kids.

SkygardenTower · 07/09/2022 07:58

Thank you for all the comments. My kids are older so I have no concerns for them. They are old enough to choose what to listen to.

My main problem is the contrast of the host wishing someone well on their first day of the year at primary school, so knew the age of the listeners, and then the song. That lyric stood out, probably as there was a change in voice, i wasn’t paying much attention beforehand.

I still think hitting someone hard enough to leave a handprint that lasts longer than a few minutes is violence. In some cases it might be consensual violence, but there is no way of knowing that.
