The former head of the Taxpayers Alliance has been appointed as her chief economic advisor. Well, that's depressing if unsurprising.

Tax cuts for the wealthy and further cuts to public services. Whoopee.

Johny Mercer ex-army Veterans Minister kicked the doors on the way out and his wife has just tweeted

Felicity Cornelius-Mercer50m
He asked her ‘why would you do this, who is going to be better at this role than me, which of your mates gets the job, you promised a meritocracy?’
PM - I can’t answer that Johnny
This system stinks & treats people appallingly

Best person I know sacked by an imbecile

Mention of Mercer and his wife reminds me of the time he went all Alan Partridge and accused someone of implying, in the comments section of the Plymouyth Herald, that his wife was a prostitute.

There was no reaching out, no acknowledgement of the problems so many face, no vision or passion. nothing to inspire. Quite a few Tory MPs are probably aghast at what the membership has imposed upon them and wondering how long before the wheels come off the Truss Bus. The ERG will be spitting if she doesn't invoke Article 16 of the Protocol sharpish - and their spiritual leader Lord Frost tuned out at least two posts he was offered.

This. Heck, Theresa May was a far more engaging and passionate speaker - and she wasn’t exactly known for her oratory skills! And say what you like about Maggie but at least she spoke with passion and conviction!

vera99 · 06/09/2022 21:28

For context

Johnny Mercer
@JohnnyMercerUK
Boris Johnson leaves No.10 this morning. Thank you for your service during an incredibly difficult time; esp for honouring your word to our veterans, for making the difficult decisions around long-standing issues, and always making time for them when others wouldn’t. Go well 🇬🇧

Otherwise known as the Tax Avoiders' Alliance.

Jellykat · 06/09/2022 22:15

One small positive.. Grant Shapps has gone

Sporty2022 · 06/09/2022 22:25

Tories want lower taxes to benefit businesses.
Hence why they want a smaller state ie smaller public services.

So don’t be surprised when you vote conservative and cuts to public services happen.

How embarrassing. She's behaving like a stroppy 13 year old.

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 22:31

She’s right. Nothing embarrassing about telling the truth.

kateandme · 06/09/2022 22:40

Sporty2022 · 06/09/2022 20:04

Braverman and Coffey have too cabinet jobs… god help us all.
Home secretary and the NHS.

Genuinely asking why is this bad?

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 22:31

She’s right. Nothing embarrassing about telling the truth.

It's very embarrassing for a 40 something year old woman, particularly one in the public eye, to have a public strop on twitter regardless of whether she is right or not.

I can think of far more important things to get stroppy about in any case.

carefullycourageous · 06/09/2022 22:48

kateandme · 06/09/2022 22:40

Braverman does not belive in human rights.
Coffey is anti-abortion and does not support same sex marriage.

They are both baddies.

Correction, Braverman doesn’t agree with human rights for other people.

I don't think it is embarrassing and I am always happier when truth is expressed rather than everyone pretending it is all lovely.

She’s not in the public eye. She’s angry about her husband being sacked from the job he created and did superbly. It is important, sacking one of the very few Tories with integrity speaks volumes about this new government.

Booklover3 · 07/09/2022 00:47

Oh Lord… what the fuck next? Locusts? Plague? Total apocalypse?

rainingsnoring · 07/09/2022 07:51

@carefullycourageous @Blossomtoes -she is in the public eye as she is his wife and it has been quoted all over the media. She is correct in what she says, I'm not disputing that, but I think she is childish and wrong to have a twitter rant about it.

This government under Johnson has been behaving in this way consistently. It is disgraceful but she is only ranting when it affects her personally. Why not before? Why has she been (presumably) supporting them throughout if she is all about telling the truth?
Apart from that, it undermines Truss, the new PM on her first day in office. Personally, I can't stand Truss or her party but this woman is (presumably) a Conservative. If Truss can't convince the world/ markets that the UK has something, our economy is likely to collapse in short order.

Mrs Mercer is not responsible for the UK's standing internationally. The fact Truss has such low standing is a reflection on Truss alone.

I don't view it as childish as I don't see the opposite - biting your tongue? - as adult.

If Truss wants to convince the markets the UK 'has something', she could try being a bit less shit. It is not in anyone's interests to see the UK struggle but I had no say in electing Truss, she has been foisted onto us all by the Tory party. I am not going to bite my tongue and pretend all is dandy while they weaken the UK even further.

Truss has appointed JRM as Business Secretary and he is going to destroy the economy with Truss's full support.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/09/2022 08:11

and she's chosen someone that has a record of voting agaisnt abortion as health secretary.
Delusions of trump

ThinWomansBrain · 07/09/2022 08:14

I don't think Truss' dad has literally cut her off in the never-darken-my-door-again sense. He has publicly refused to support her politically, which is a bit different

so hopefully we won't get him doing a Stanley Johnson and popping up on any TV or radio program that will have him.
One thing to be thankful for.

SleeplessInEngland · 07/09/2022 08:16

Lol at Braverman getting Home Sec.

Truss continues in the vein of her predecessor: surrounding herself with loyal morons to make her look like the smart one.

SueSaid · 07/09/2022 09:10

'she is in the public eye as she is his wife and it has been quoted all over the media. She is correct in what she says, I'm not disputing that, but I think she is childish and wrong to have a twitter rant about it.'

Just so cringeworthy. Imagine if all the spouses of replaced Ministers had childish rants like this on Twitter.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 07/09/2022 09:17

I would be lying if I said it wasn't hilarious though.

vera99 · 07/09/2022 09:35

Second Lieutenant Johnny has been replaced by a Captain. TBF to his wife his resignation letter was very petulant she just added spice to the pot. That said the Tory party is virtually ungovernable now and this was only the first of many spats to come no doubt albeit within hours of her acclamation.

With so many backbenchers looking at a rout in their constituencies in the coming general election they will have little reason to be loyal to the many crises and policy decisions that are going to have to be made. I suspect the ERG will be the biggest thorns as the Brexit road has run out of tarmac and however stupid she may be there will be an element of practical realpolitik in her relations with the EU and that doesn't go down well at the Unicorn factory that they run (badly!).
