My biggest concern is that she is not a leader. She’s an unpopular opportunist who came through as a ‘not-Rishi’ candidate.

She will do nothing, is unable to do anything, about the constant Tory party infighting that is destroying the country right now.

The state is on its knees. Anyone who has tried to get a GP appointment or get help for their child at school, who is seeing hosepipe bans while water companies can’t stop leaks, who is trying to access new benefits as a result of a life change etc. Energy bills are the highest profile issue but people are desperate.

And the party in government can’t look beyond how much it still cares about who voted to leave the EU six years ago.

The party membership has elected a leader with no charisma, no energy, no unifying plan, and who polls suggest is very unpopular in the country.

vera99 · 05/09/2022 13:54

I was no fan of Thatcher but she would be turning in her grave at what has become of her party, the country and the pygmy poundshop knock-off that has taken her place in the annals of history.

shootfromthehip145 · 05/09/2022 13:55

All those claiming to know what Liz is going to do are talking out of their back sides.

She has not even had chance to sort out a cabinet until tomorrow and not official been put in place by the queen yet. Typical MN Woke lefty's all rabidly banging crap out on their keyboards wildly as she is not a labor leader.

Never read as much completer and utter shit as posted in this thread 😂

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 05/09/2022 13:55

Her biggest problem is that only a 3rd of the membership voted for her & wasn't the MPs choice either... so she has no mandate with the party.

I would imagine she expected to do better amongst the membership. It was always likely that anyone who ended up on the ballot would be running against Rishi, and she did poll quite favourably compared to him back when the MPs were still whittling down the candidates. It's interesting that we didn't see that fully reflected in the voting numbers.

Agree though, it's a real problem for her. And to that I'd add that a lot, perhaps a majority but at least a significant minority of Tories really didn't want to get rid of Johnson at all and are still working through some anger and grief there. So whoever followed him would also have to deal with the possibility of being blamed for that in a roundabout way, even if they had stayed loyal. I don't think we can call yet how big a deal this is going to be, but there's definitely going to be an element of This Wasn't Supposed To Happen bubbling beneath the surface.

The trouble was that TM over-promised and under-delivered.

ET has held back on specific commitments, so maybe she's had a think about mistakes made by her predecessors and is doing it differently.

Or maybe she doesn't have anything to promise. It is a poisoned chalice she's decided to take on, there's no doubt about it.

I don't envy her position, but I do admire her as a woman operating in a man's world, so damning her before she's even done 24 hours in post is a shitty thing to do IMO. I actually hope she proves the doubters wrong.

I'm damning her for almost 15 years of poorly thought through, right-wing, rich-favouring policies.

vera99 · 05/09/2022 13:56

This autumn there will be massive street demonstrations like the Poll Tax in the 90s where anger will spill out onto the streets coalescing around the Enough is Enough campaign amongst many others.

What makes you think we're talking out of our backsides when these are all things she's publicly advocated for?

Calm down. If her policies are up in the air it's because she's the one who's said bugger all about them, apart from tax cuts she inevitably u-turn on when the reality of navigating a cost of living crisis becomes clear.

the80sweregreat · 05/09/2022 13:59

We are only going by the bull crap she's come out since mid June
It's enough to know we are all going to suffer
I'm cheering on the Scots to go for independence! Go for it , because the tories won't care and don't care about anyone but themselves and their cronies and making people poorer. The Tory way.
Even Phillip Hammond said it yesterday, her plans are bonkers !
Only he sugar coated it

vera99 · 05/09/2022 13:59

The shits in our rivers and seas, not this thread. Cold War Steve's acid take on the "Coronation".

We've had 4 prime ministers in 6 years. It could soon be 5 in 7 years. That is not the symptom of a politically healthy, happy country.

And BJ only hung on soong because everyone was scared to do something during covid.

the80sweregreat · 05/09/2022 13:59

It's going to be a tough few years

purfectpuss · 05/09/2022 14:00

hamustro · 05/09/2022 13:50

Can anyone please link me to something that sets out Liz Truss' intentions with regards to labour laws and workers' rights? I've tried myself, but all I can find are various articles that are called something along the lines of 'Liz Truss urged to come clean on workers' rights which aren't particularly insightful or helpful.

Has anything been set in stone or is this speculation?

Probably it's about getting rid of the Working Time Directive which was an EU law. Other than that, there are no facts to substantiate what her actual plans are.

people are just leaping on top of the sensationalist media and jumping to inaccurate, non-fact based conclusions before the end of her first day. Then proliferating it on social media - so now it suddenly becomes fact.

She has been going up and down the country for the last 8 weeks, she has promised tax cuts to grow the economy, she wont do more hand outs for energy bills and she wont give help to everyone.

She says she wants a smaller state, lower taxes and more personal responsibility.

She has come a long way from when she was a LibDem and a fervent remainer, so knowing what she will do next is probably very different to judge.
