To think she should have let my child have the balloon?

We were out earlier at a chain pub style restaurant and they had a stand with some balloons on for children to have.

My son (4) went up to get one which happened to be the last but just as he was going up, a woman at a table closer got up and got it (it was very obvious my son was going for it and she turned around to him and said oh sorry).

She then walked back to her table and gave it to a baby sat in a high chair who couldn't have been over 8 months old.

AIBU to think she should have let my son take it rather than giving it to a baby who basically dropped it after 2 seconds and didn't look at it again.

That's so mean of her.

SirChenjins · 04/09/2022 18:28

The OP doesn’t need to have stared and seethed (snarky - nice), she probably just noticed that the family weren’t amusing the baby with a balloon for the duration.

CoolerThanIceCream · 04/09/2022 18:29

Seriously?

You’re posting on Mumsnet about this?

She wanted it for her kid.

You wanted it for your kid.

She got there first.

Shit happens, and the world continues to spin on its axis.

Shiningstarr · 04/09/2022 18:30

I would have asked if there were any more balloons, then after sorting that out, I would have walked past her chair and knocked into it, and gone 'oh sorry'

😂😂😂

YANBU. She was just nasty, rushing past a 4 year old to get a balloon he was going to get. I'd have probably asked a staff member (quite loudly) of they had any more as a woman barged past my 4 year old on his way to get one. Hopefully a bit of bad karma goes her way.

I agree with you, pretty mean.

But I would've forgotten it about 2 mins later

Yeah but maybe a 4yo wouldn't........

OldEnoughToHaveReadBunty · 04/09/2022 18:32

Oh wow, some pretty sharp responses!

I personally wouldn't have made a move to grab a balloon I could clearly see a 4 year old walking towards.

Did you ask if there were any more OP? Most places (ie McDonald's) do have more, providing anyone has spare time to blow you one up.

Accidently spilling a drink too 😆

Exactly, some people are such drama queens. This woman is called low, horrible, shitty all because she got it first for her child. Why on earth would she care about another child when she had her own? Op get a grip.

AlwaysLatte · 04/09/2022 18:35

YANBU I think its mean but then I think of others.
This is what I think too.

CoolerThanIceCream · 04/09/2022 18:36

grey12 · 04/09/2022 18:32

Yeah but maybe a 4yo wouldn't........

Well, no, not when Mum is so aggrieved by the injustice of someone else’s PFB getting the balloon, that she’s moved to start a thread about it on MN………..

AlwaysLatte · 04/09/2022 18:36

And in any case the baby would have been put off balloons for life if it had popped. They're not for babies.

scooble · 04/09/2022 18:44

yanbu. If this thread was written from the other mum’s perspective these same posters would be saying she’s unreasonable because that’s just what AIBU is like

Viostep · 04/09/2022 18:45

Surely the posters slating the OP wouldn't actually race a little 4 year old to get the last balloon for a baby who would have no interest in said balloon?! That's so mean and they have a nerve to call you a PFB mother

mattermore · 04/09/2022 18:47

luxxlisbon · 04/09/2022 18:23

Nope, too bad but your 4 year old isn’t owed the balloon anymore than a baby. The balloon would have given them something to entertain the baby with over the duration of their meal. Unless you were sitting there seething and staring at them the entire time you really can’t say the baby only looked at it for 2 seconds.
I thought you were going to say an adult woman had gotten it for herself!

This. Baby could have been getting bored and they wanted something to entertain it with so they could finish their meal in peace. It’s an 8 month old able to be interested and play and not a newborn,

To those saying they would have said something, you do realise that doing that would make you the mad parent who thinks their precious child is more important than any other child?!

Its not a bad thing for a four year old to learn that sometimes there are others in the queue ahead of you, and sometimes things sell out.

Hurrrrrah · 04/09/2022 18:50

She probably didn't think I guess, she was thinking about her pfb and not a small child who would actually be upset over it. She was unreasonable but she won't have seen it like that.

Nobody said she barged the 4 yo out of the way , she got up from a closer table and got it for her child .

BendingSpoons · 04/09/2022 18:52

YANBU. It's a bit PFB to make sure her young baby gets it.

Blueemeraldagain · 04/09/2022 18:53

I might have asked if my child could have had it once the baby had dropped it and moved on?

Mumspair1 · 04/09/2022 18:53

Hurrrrrah · 04/09/2022 18:50

But WHY was she unreasonable? She didn't race the 4yo, she was closer and probably meant to get it in any case. Given that this place gives away free balloons they probably had a ton of them for the next time. All the petty op had to do was open her mouth and ask instead of starting a thread about such a silly thing.

SpinningFloppa · 04/09/2022 18:53

People on MN are so dramatic she didn’t race the child she got up as was closer to it then notice the child after she picked it up, she didn’t race the child 🤦🏻

MsRosley · 04/09/2022 18:54

'Now your baby has had a bit of fun with the balloon, do you mind if I give it to my son? He's very disappointed.'

sweet smile

Dotcheck · 04/09/2022 18:55

It’s a dog eat dog world out there.

sqirrelfriends · 04/09/2022 18:59

Shitty behaviour IMO but nothing to be done about it.
