We've been back for 3 weeks now and the summer already feels like a distant memory. It wasn't so bad at the time as it was still bright and warm however I'm getting the gloomy feeling now that the nights are drawing in and there is a chill in the air. As my user name suggests I'm definitely all about summer and the holidays are the highlight of that (I work in a school so get the time off with dc)

EllaPaella · 04/09/2022 13:22

I've really enjoyed the summer holidays. We had a two week break all together and the most amazing family holiday and have shared loads of time with friends and extended family. I always feel a bit sad when the kids go back but this time I feel ready to get back into a routine.
I'm looking forward to being a bit more organised at work again, juggling childcare over the summer holidays is always a nightmare so it's a relief to think I don't have to worry about it again for nearly another year!

Fairislefandango · 04/09/2022 13:24

Nope. I went back on Thursday (teacher, excited about being at a new school!). My teenage dc don't go back until this Thursday. Ds is quite looking forward to it, dd isn't. But they've both had too much hanging around time and need to get back into some kind of routine!
We only went away for one week and the holidays have actually been a bit boring!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 04/09/2022 13:26

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… 🎤

Mine goes back on Tuesday and it's about time.

He's had a long rest, spent most of the summer at the swimming pool, has grown about four inches and is reading three paperbacks a week.

Definitely time he had more to occupy his mind 😀

That sounds like an absolutely fantastic way for a child to spend the sumner holidays. Mine have loved swimming in the sea almost every single day over the last 6 weeks (and actually most of July as well due to lovely weather and flat seas).
I continue swimming in the sea into winter but I will miss my boys coming with me and the long beach days.

XantThinkOfAnything · 04/09/2022 13:29

We've had an amazing (and expensive!) summer with lots of fun days out, a week away and sleep overs. Dc are back into school tomorrow and DC1 who has ASD and been refusing school last year is going to struggle. His anxiety has been growing the past week and I can already tell It's going to be a battle keeping him in school. I feel like I should just deregister and home educate as I can't go through (and put him through) our experience of last year. He was like a different child over the summer and it breaks my heart seeing his mental health suffer.

Sunnytwobridges · 04/09/2022 13:34

I hate the summer months and always look forward to school starting. But I like structure and I hate entertaining kids all summer.

Pinklady245612 · 04/09/2022 13:42

I've had a lovely summer and love spending time with my kids, but pleased to get back to normality. We've had 8 weeks off and it's just too long - mine went back last week. Friday was bliss as it was my day off. I deep cleaned the house, got some chores done in town and didn't have to think about who had eaten, which friend they were meeting and when, or who had gotten dressed yet. It was just me and it was fab.
Things I'm looking forward to - there are two free events in my town in the next few weeks, I have a canal trip booked with my family to celebrate my parents birthdays (postponed from last year), I have two events booked in for Christmas already as well as Christmas itself obviously, a cancer awareness ball which also involves my oldest friend visiting, a rugby match next month, and the women's rugby world cup in October.

NameChangeLifeChange · 04/09/2022 13:44

It’s been our first proper ‘summer holidays’ as our eldest is going into year 1 and despite being nervous beforehand (not sure why) we have had a lovely few weeks. Mix of hols, A/L days, holiday clubs and play dates but definitely some quality time together.
We are all ready for some routine though! TV has been on a LOT this past week as my capacity to ‘play’ constantly it rapidly deteriorating. I have a September birthday so love this month and generally like the back to school vibe!
I feel nervous for this winter but hopeful it may not be as bad as expected? Also trying to manage expectations for this Christmas for everyone as much as possible early on.
Normally I’d be booking a Christmas show, lights trail etc but the fear of risings costs is putting me off. It’s a tricky time!

Poppyseed14 · 04/09/2022 13:45

Sad here too OP. And anxious today for some reason as well. Can feel it in my chest. We will be OK once the first day is over us xx

bluechameleon · 04/09/2022 13:54

No. DC are sick of each other tbh, and I'm ready to spend time with other people's children after 6 solid weeks of my own.

WonderingWanda · 04/09/2022 13:57

I'm a teacher and love the holidays but my kids are ready for a bit of structure again, we are all getting on each others nerves. I am dreading going back because I hate the pace of life during term times and love being able to take my time and actually enjoy life over the summer. Not looking forward to early starts, rush hour traffic, manic dashes back after school, trying to get tea ready for exhausted children, all the homework, uniforms, lunches and PE kit shenanigans, dealing with my own workload. I am sure it will all feel fine after the first week though, just a transition.

zingally · 04/09/2022 12:06

I don't mind it! I'm a supply teacher, and I'm looking forward to getting back to my routine of every day being a bit of an adventure!

That being said, I'm not back to work until Thursday. Schools go back tomorrow, but I'm taking a few bonus days and going to York with a friend for a couple of nights!

Me too. My dc go back on Wednesday, I'm taking the rest of the week as a holiday for myself and am then free for work from the following Monday. I can't wait to start earning again!!

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/09/2022 14:05

Mine don’t go back til Weds FFS

Floatyunicorn · 04/09/2022 14:10

Im sad too OP.
My youngest starts reception this week and im gonna miss our days together, feel like I didnt get to do as much as i did with oldest due to covid. Doesnt seem five mins ago he was a baby and im all upset (but of course not showing it in front of him)
Im happy for my eldest as he likes school and misses his friends.

Only work part time so need to find things to keep myself busy and get this first week out of the way.

Sounds like you have no life outside your kids. Time for some friends or a hobby op

Summer means lots of things for me, not just kid related!!

Singleandproud · 04/09/2022 14:18

I'm sad for a different reason, I love working with children but can't afford to carry on my role, I've had a go at teaching too and I don't enjoy it so this is my last term before moving to a different sector in the new year.

From a familial point of view DD loves school, shes an only and gets lonely although has met with some friends this holiday. I like the structure of term time although already got a diary full of sports training and matches for the new season, we're going to be very busy.

NCHammer2022 · 04/09/2022 14:21

I’m not feeling any dread. Even though I’ve long since left formal education and I work all year round, September still always feels like the start of a new year, and a fresh start (more so than January to me). DD is really excited to start school and it’s a new routine for us. I can’t see how any of it is more drudgery or stress inducing than juggling work and nursery as we have been doing up to now. Uniforms are the only real difference and I have no intention of ironing every day as suggested in a pp. Besides, it’s only 6 weeks until half term. The weather feels like it’s finally turning too, which is a welcome relief for me because I’ve been waiting for the heat to fuck off for ages.

yes I agree with you 100% on this. It’s a relief the schools going back. It might be ok for parents that are home all summer but in reality most in real life are trying to juggle work and childcare plus money throughout the holidays.

DONTMESSWITHMEDARNA · 04/09/2022 14:39

not here, joys of home educating

started in 2015 and best lifestyle ever.

especially in the lockdowns, we had zero stress

its quite sad when parents wish their children away from them for hours a day.and then admit they cant wait for it.

Bunnycat101 · 04/09/2022 14:39

I always feel like autumn is a re-set. It is also much easier for me logistically than holidays when I’m working as I have more of a drive for camps and have to get the children up earlier. Our actual holiday was lovely and chilled but the reality is that working and juggling childcare is a bit harder for me in holidays.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 04/09/2022 14:42

I'm looking forward to the kids going back, work and school holidays not being the easiest of things.

Kids back, sports and hobbies back, time to breathe on my day off.

bluesky45 · 04/09/2022 14:43

I feel a weird combination of sad and excited. We've had such a lovely summer, most of it just me and my boys. We've done all sorts and had a lovely time. Yeah, they've argued sometimes and not listened and stuff but overall,it's been lovely. So I'm sad that it's over. But also really excited for them to start school tomorrow. Ds1 starts reception and ds2 starts preschool and I know they are both going to love it and we are going to enjoy the routine and saving some money!

BuggerationFlavouredCrisps · 04/09/2022 14:45

Nope. It's grand.
We've had 11 weeks school holidays and DS started back last week.

It's been great getting back to doing stuff I want to do. The only annoying thing was that he missed the bus home on Friday and I had to drive into town to collect him and his friend. 🤨
