Dishwasher turned on at night or in morning?

Peppermint81 · 02/09/2022 21:55

I have always thought it best to turn the dishwasher on late evening so can unload in the morning to start day fresh.
My husband disagrees and prefers to put it on in the morning so it's not sitting in the damp all night.

Out of interest do you turn your dishwasher on in the evening or morning and why?!

I tend to put it on as I'm getting ready for bed, due to the nature of being loaded in the evening. But I also put it on during the day as and when it's full.

Off topic, but could anyone send me details of these cheap night time tariffs? I could only find ones which were the same price all the time.

They are usually for all electric houses that have storage heaters that charge up overnight. They have a higher day rate though

We have oil heating but we have a special tariff for electric car owners via Octopus. It is cheap for specific hours at night (and also competitive in the day). But you need an electric car (we have 2).

megletthesecond · 03/09/2022 13:29

Daytime as I work PT or DS will pop it on the moment he gets in at 15:30. The crappy eco wash takes four and a half hours so that means I can open it at bedtime and it'll be dry the next day.

Yes same here, it's not extortionate during the day (well not yet) but there's a couple of hours overnight where it's super cheap so you can charge your car (and do your washing!). We're with octopus too

In an ideal world, though we would have two dishwashers, one clear from which we use things and the other dirty which is being filled with used items.

Never have to empty it again. Kitchen always tidy with no dirty crockery sitting around. Bliss

Theoldwoman · 03/09/2022 15:22

I do prefer to turn it on after dinner and empty when I get up in the morning , however my power is cheapest between 9am and 3pm so I have changed it to go on then.

I seriously petitioned for this in my new kitchen and my husband and builder laughed at me!

mrsplum2015 · 03/09/2022 15:47

Solar panels so after breakfast here

Otherwise I found it worked better after dinner to be unloaded in the morning

Cheeselog · 03/09/2022 15:55

The beeping from ours when it finishes wakes us up so we have it run in the morning. But we set it in the evening and use the timer function so that it finishes around when we wake up.

imnotthatkindofmum · 03/09/2022 15:58

After dinner but before bed. Then it gets emptied when home from work ready for the next load!

Weekends it's just random.

At night. It doesn't 'sit damp', it is drained dry by morning. Is he mistaking it for the washing machine? Grin I don't put that on at night because clothes can get rank lying scrunched up and damp all night. But dishes don't.

Ours isn't that old and it's a Siemens. But it doesn't have a dry mode? If it's left closed, the pots etc don't feel dry. I always thought it was like condensation. I always open it up and pull out the shelves as soon as it's finished and everything is hot and super dry.

But that might just be my own warped logic.

Not overnight though as we once had a washer fire. It was in the garage. I was in the adjoining kitchen. I smelt smoke and literally within seconds the garage was filled with choking fumes and flames were coming out of the machine. So scary.

Lcb123 · 03/09/2022 16:26

Whenever it’s full, usually every other day but a mixture of day and evening. Can’t use it overnight as live in a small flat and the dishwasher is only steps from our bedroom!

Saracen · 03/09/2022 16:55

If possible, I start ours well before bedtime. I prefer it to run when we're awake due to the fire risk - the risk isn't high, but why not eliminate it altogether if I can.

Also, by running it when I am around, I can interrupt the cycle to prevent it from entering the drying cycle. (My dishwasher has no economy setting to let me avoid that cycle.) Then I open it up and pull the racks out so the dishes air dry overnight.

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/09/2022 16:59

Evening after dinner but definitely not overnight, a dishwasher is a fire risk and shouldn’t be left unattended!

KatieB55 · 03/09/2022 17:26

A friend left her dishwasher on and popped to shop - came back to find fire engine putting out kitchen on fire.

saveforthat · 02/09/2022 22:23

Surely all dishwashers have a drying cycle. What does sitting in damp mean?

Just what I was thinking! If your dishes come out damp your dishwasher is broken...

megletthesecond · 03/09/2022 17:45

I have a brand new bosch. I think part of its amazing energy saving means it doesn't dry very well. All my plastic tubs have far more water in the ridges than my old dishwasher.

LuckyAmy1986 · 03/09/2022 18:04

OperaStation · 03/09/2022 06:44

As soon as everything from that day has been loaded in it gets switched on. Usually about 7pm. The cycle has usually finished by the time we go to bed and the door automatically pops open when it’s finished so it’s all dry by the time we get up in the morning.

Putting it on in the morning makes no sense. You have no clean crockery or cutlery to use for breakfast and surely you’re at work by the time the cycle finishes?

It makes no sense in YOUR household you mean? We have enough crockery and cutlery to see us through more than one dishwasher run... and not everyone works. And not everyone starts work at that time in the morning. And some people work from home. How bizarre that you can't imagine any other household runs differently to yours!

As for the 5 hour run, that might be an eco setting, so the exact opposite of a massive waste of energy.

LuftBalloons · 03/09/2022 18:24

In the evening so the dishes are dried and ready for breakfast. Your DH is doing it wrongly if the dishes are “sitting in the damp” overnight!

User148563 · 03/09/2022 18:31

I'm beginning to think I have too much crockery as I have never had to time the dishwasher so I can have breakfast

IWasFunBeforeMum · 03/09/2022 18:34

Ours doesn't shut off completely when it's finished (you have to manually press the power button) so I'll only do it when I'm awake so it's not left on all night

NorthernPud · 03/09/2022 19:11

Yes, to be clear, we default to the 5 hour eco cycle. It's not just to waste massive amounts of energy :)

Have you ever worked out exactly how much it costs to leave it 'on' over night. It won't be heating up or drawing much current at all. I would want to know how much before changing my behaviour around it.

mogsrus · 03/09/2022 20:25

When full, it goes on morning or night, don’t care
