Dishwasher turned on at night or in morning?

I have always thought it best to turn the dishwasher on late evening so can unload in the morning to start day fresh.
My husband disagrees and prefers to put it on in the morning so it's not sitting in the damp all night.

Out of interest do you turn your dishwasher on in the evening or morning and why?!

The thought of a dishwasher catching fire has me like this (one for the IT Crowd fans out there).

Dishwasher turned on at night or in morning?
notangelinajolie · 02/09/2022 22:54

I set mine off in the morning after everyone has buggered off to work.

FinallyHere · 02/09/2022 22:56

Overnight whether it needs it or not.

It opens itself when it finishes the dry cycle so jo question of 'sitting in the damp all night'.

Ilovechocolate87 · 02/09/2022 22:58

Evening, after tea, to be finished and turned off before bed.
On occasion we forget and it goes on in the morning, but it can be a struggle for it to clean well if so as the food particles are so set on everything by then!

When the suns out 😂. We have solar energy

Cloudonthemountains · 02/09/2022 23:07

We don't run any appliances overnight. Not since a serious fire in a family member's home. The speed of spread was terrifying.

Rutland2022 · 02/09/2022 23:10

I live in a thatch with open fires, the dishwasher is the least of our worries!

IncessantNameChanger · 02/09/2022 23:11

After dinner. Then open it before I go to bed to dry off

scoobydoo1971 · 02/09/2022 23:29

I had a dishwasher catch fire. It was a new appliance, less than one year old. The engineer who came to inspect it said in his 20 years of working in this field he never saw anything like it. He was shocked by what happened in my kitchen and how I was lucky I could smell the burning from another room to avert disaster. It melted and buckled underneath and on the door, and had smoked out/ scorched the worktop and next cabinet door by the time I went to check. My dishwasher was a flaming wok. So I wouldn't advise anyone to leave appliances unattended day or night.

AlwaysLatte · 02/09/2022 23:33

We try to keep ours down to two loads a day but the last load is always late at night on cheap rate.

QuebecBagnet · 02/09/2022 23:33

I’ve also had a dishwasher catch fire. Plus I remember a thread on here years and years ago where a poster had a dishwasher fire overnight and the house was gutted and her cats died. So definitely not overnight

AlwaysLatte · 02/09/2022 23:34

Last washing machine load also on at night - both currently 11.30pm

AlwaysLatte · 02/09/2022 23:36

That's a great idea if you don't have a naughty Labrador. Ours would be giving it a good lick if it pinged open in the middle of the night!

TeaThings · 02/09/2022 23:37

After the evening meal. I open the door before I go to bed. All the annoying plasticy things that the dishwasher doesn't dry can then drip dry overnight. I empty it in the morning while making my coffee.

allboysherebutme · 02/09/2022 23:37

I do turn mine on at night after dinner ect, but make sure I turn it off before bed.
A fire fighter once told me appliances are a big hazard and dishwashers still heat their element until turned off properly.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/09/2022 23:49

After tea so anytime 8/9pm. Sometimes finishes before we go or bed - it’s 90m wash. Other times still running as good to bed

unpack in am while sorting out breakie

MojoJojo71 · 02/09/2022 23:53

Never at night since advised by fire service. I don’t charge my phone overnight either as they said that they get lots of calls from fires started from devices left charging.

Cooking appliances, portable heating and smoking are more common that electrical fires.

Re: cooking appliances - is that because they are prone to catching fire or because there are just so many of them in households across the land?

Libertyqueen · 02/09/2022 23:55

When we’re both at work all day I prefer to run it after breakfast (with dinner things in too) so that I come back to a clear kitchen. Then whilst cooking, unload it.

Frazzled2207 · 03/09/2022 00:01

Overnight because we have octopus 🐙 go tariff which means much much cheaper between 12 and 4am

WeightoftheWorld · 03/09/2022 00:12

Ours most often goes on just before me and DH go to bed at night. Just because it's usually almost full after dinner/kids are in bed, but then me and DH will have a brew, sometimes use a few plates for dessert, water glass etc so we then put all that in and turn it on before we go to bed. However we basically put it on whenever it's full so if we've all been out all day or whatever it might not go on until later the next day or whenever. Just whenever it's full but that's typically the end of each day.

DH is a firefighter - not at night!! 😬😬

But modern dishwashers now switch themselves off on completion of the cycle.
I can understand how it would be an issue with older models though.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/09/2022 01:01

Evening, whether it’s full or not. Empty it in the morning.

Oops, I always put mine on at night! I will stop doing that now.
