To warn you about Russian windows?

CaveMum · 01/09/2022 11:01

It appears that Russian windows are terribly dangerous. It's shocking the number of critics of Putin who have suffered these "accidents", shocking I tell you!

Can you put "defenestration" on a death certificate 🤔

Defenestration on the death certificate is well funny. I like that 😁

They need to take heed of John Irving and "Keep passing the open windows."

unicormb · 01/09/2022 13:09

So many accidents in Russia these days...

RaRaRaspoutine · 01/09/2022 13:18

Hahaha @sobeyondthehills I completely forget what my username is nowadays as I'm always signed in!

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 13:26

Meanwhile, a heroic 48 yo gardener dies "in the line of duty", presumably providing medical assistance to all those Ukrainian trees on the front line.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62747817

We're not expected to believe the window story, but we are expected to believe this.

RaRaRaspoutine · 01/09/2022 13:32

@VirginiaWool there's mention of medic training with the TA. PResumably that's why he went out there. I do agree we should question everything we read but I don't think a man who volunteered to fight and had every intention to come back and garden makes for either a suspicious case or a particularly likely media martyr.

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 13:34

A man who "volunteers to fight" is a mercenary.

I have a silly question, if anyone could help

Are they being killed by Putin and his like because they have spoken out against the war or he thinks they are a threat in someway?

Or an outside "someone" who is trying to cut away Putin's inner circle?

Or is it anyone's guess?

The former. Lukoil was the only energy company in Russia that spoke out against the war. The former President, Alekperov, resigned a week after sanctions were announced. I have no idea where he is currently but you can bet his security are on hyper alert currently.

No one was genuinely supposed to believe this was an accident. It’s a warning shot, aimed at Alekperov and/or any other Oligarchs that have any notions of deposing him.

Long story short is that the Oligarchs collected their wealth in the 90s, following the fall of the Soviet Union and during a period of free-for-all gangster capitalism under Yeltsin. This essentially put them in control of the newly born Russian Federation, although they were loathed within the country. They were a problem for Putin, so he cut a deal with them. They could keep what they had, they just had to bend the proverbial knee and know their place. Abramovich, for example, agreed to this. Berezovsky (you may know the name in regards to Aleksandr Litvinenko) did not. Berezovsky ‘committed suicide’.

Even bought to heel as they were, they still have enormous influence. The western press openly pondered the possibility of the Oligarchs, angry at the sanctions of the seizure of their assets, getting rid of Putin (I suspect this may have been, at least in part, motivation for the sanctions on the first place). If the western press thought it, you can bet your ass Putin did.

Maganov is the tenth ‘mystery death’ of prominent Russian Oligarchs this year, the second from Lukoil. Most have been from Gazprom. He’s cleaning house in regards to the energy sector. It may be that a plot was uncovered, and it may be to send a message to remind them to watch their step. It may be both.

Yes. I'm not sure how that feeds into whether we should believe a media story or not.

I thought mercenaries were paid fighters.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/09/2022 13:41

Just looked it up, mercenaries are hired to fight. Volunteers are not mercenaries.

whumpthereitis · 01/09/2022 13:42

Oh, and a few of the cases have been ‘murder suicides’ where the wives and children have been killed too. One was in Spain, one was in the UK. A clear message of ‘our reach is long. You are not safe and nor is your family. Think carefully’.

Thank you for this, I had seen a few deaths but didnt know it was that many.

Rosehugger · 01/09/2022 12:11

Me too re widows.

If Russian windows are so dangerous, can't someone shove Putin out of one?

This would solve so many problems, just with one small shove! Putin must be living in utter fear of being bumped off. I would say paranoid, but there would be nothing irrational about it!

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 13:46

I doubt he was there for free; there's reference to how long he had to stay there for.

Anyway a mercenary is just someone who takes part in a war that their nation isn't a party to and is outside of regular military. Ukraine is the only country to officially pay its mercenaries from state funds.

BMW6 · 01/09/2022 13:51

No, mercenaries are very well paid experienced soldiers who fight for the money, not a principal.

They charge mega bucks.

What a nasty little slur you're attempting to make, Virginia. That stick up your arse must be really hurting.

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 13:56

In Hollywood maybe. In central/eastern Europe a lot of them are hobbyists with guns and questionable views that regular armed forces don't want.

The salisbury poisonings and Alexander Litvinenko were like murder (or attempted murder) in plain sight.

Thank you for this, I had seen a few deaths but didnt know it was that many.

No problem.

Yes, this was the tenth. I do not doubt that there will be more. It’s a purge. Like I said, I do not know if there was a plot to act against Putin, but it’s certainly possible. It’s also possible that one of his loyalists suggested getting rid of him to expose who would bite.

Putin is a lot of things, but while he may miscalculate at times, he’s by no means a stupid man. He was also shaped by the KGB. He knows all about espionage and counter espionage, and he knows how to protect himself from assassination attempts. That isn’t to say he’s immune to it, but it does mean that getting to him is one hell of a task.

I’m talking about the ones from this year, alone but yes. Berezovsky was another ‘suicide’ that happened in the UK, in 2013.

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 13:34

A man who "volunteers to fight" is a mercenary.

So all the working class men who went with the International Brigade to fight Fascism in Spain were mercenaries? No.

"a soldier who will fight for any country or group that offers payment" (OED definition)

Don't really see that murdering people should be a topic for humour

Anything can be a topic for humour. Have you ever heard of satire?

Anything?

OK You start a humorous thread on the gang rape of Iraqi women or ISIS throwing gays off tall buildings and see how long it stays up.

Its all satire ain't it.....

These are current murders and deaths, not just Russians but now UK citizens.

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 14:10

Agree that Putin is neither stupid nor crazy. This murder and the others are calculated acts designed to send a clear message.

Re the Salisbury incident, those two guys wittering on about the cathedral spire is proper old school KGB. Again, they're not expecting you to believe them. What they're expecting you to take from that is that they can do what they like and they don't care about what you think because they know you can't stop them.

CPL593H · 01/09/2022 14:12

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 13:56

In Hollywood maybe. In central/eastern Europe a lot of them are hobbyists with guns and questionable views that regular armed forces don't want.

Quite so in the case of the Wagner group, employed by Putin, in case anyone has forgotten them. Somewhat depleted now, I believe.
