My energy bill will still quadruple even if I put a jumper on?

AIBU to think that even if I participate in this weird new “wear warm clothes in wintertime” trend, shut doors, buy draught excluders, buy Oodies, buy thermal curtains, and buy a £300 air fryer my energy bill will still quadruple.

Especially as most people wete already doing all or some of that.

Nothing short of turning the heating off is going to make much difference is it?

(Although of course I'm trying.)

After all, the money saving expert himself, Martin Lewis, says this isn’t something individuals can fix on their own , and it would be pretty arrogant to think I know better than him.

The "Put a jumper on" advice doesn't help British businesses at all does it?

What do you think?

Here are the energy calculators fit domestic users, but I'm not sure closing a door is going to help British businesses.

Don't mix commercial and domestic rates for a start

YANBU.

And am I being really thick here - if someone is on a fixed tariff then it surely doesn't matter if you try and keep the heating off, and wear 6 jumpers?

A fixed tariff means you pay a fixed amount PER UNIT YOU USE, it's not just pay 150 a month and ✨all inclusive energy✨

Not this misunderstanding again. A fixed rate fixes the UNIT PRICE, not the monthly cost. It is not an ‘all you can eat’ tariff. You will still pay for exactly the amount of energy you use. I am a bit terrified at the number of people who seem to think that ‘the cap’ or a ‘fixed rate’ means you can’t be charged above a certain amount monthly.

berksandbeyond · 01/09/2022 11:10

So yes, i'm on a fixed tariff, but if I use less energy I'll pass less, magic innit

luxxlisbon · 01/09/2022 11:14

Since when is wearing a jumper in the winter a new trend? 😂

Mamamia7962 · 01/09/2022 11:16

If you wear warmer clothes and turn your thermostat down then of course you will be saving money. No point having the thermostat set at 23 degrees and only wearing a tee shirt in the middle of winter.

OhMerde · 01/09/2022 11:20

A weird trend? What are you on about op? Yes, it does mean many people will simply turn their heating off. It's a stark choice. It means being colder than you'd like.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 01/09/2022 11:20

@verdantverdure what's the actual point of your thread? You've been on enough energy threads where it's all been discussed. Are you simply trying to upset people?

Bebbanburg2507 · 01/09/2022 11:20

Wearing a jumper is not a new idea! Every winter I've worn jumpers, thick socks, fingerless gloves in the house and had a hot water bottle. Did people not do this already?! Maybe this winter I'll have to wear two jumpers 😂

LovePoppy · 01/09/2022 11:21

Not necessarily.

that would have worked last year. But if her unit price is much higher, then even using drastically less, she could still end up paying more

SunnydayeverythingsAOK · 01/09/2022 11:24

Think the OP was being sarcastic about the "weird trend" 🙄

Twooforjoy · 01/09/2022 11:47

I WFH full time and I've found the worst bit is how cold/numb I get from lack of movement. So I am always boosting the heating. But this winter I'm going to go walk twice a day. I just feel my body go sluggish and cold from sitting still for prolonged periods even though I'm clutching a hot water bottle.

I haven't been able to fix my tarrif. Still on variable and no option to fix (British Gas).

Proteinpudding · 01/09/2022 11:49

The standing charges - what you pay for the privilege of being connected - have gone up loads and are going up again. So there is no 'saving money by wearing a jumper' there's just the difference between quite how much more you have to pay, either a bill twice as high as you paid last year or four times as high as you paid last year. Difference depending on how miserable you're prepared to live.

Why roll your eyes? It wasn't at all obvious it was sarcastic.

HouseOfWaffles · 01/09/2022 11:57

I was in the hairdressers last week and it was the talk of the place how people had fixed their tariff so could crank up the heat and tumble dry all the live long day as they wouldn't have to pay any more. Because it's fixed.

People planning to have all of their extended family over for Sunday dinner as they have a fixed tariff.

There is definitely a lot of people who don't understand what it means.

Hugasauras · 01/09/2022 11:59

Yep so many people think that they've fixed their direct debit and that means whatever they do they will pay X a month. Add to that the 'I'm just going to pay what I use' brigade totally unaware that means in Jan their monthly bill could be £800, and a lot of people are in for a very nasty shock this winter.

BorgQueen · 01/09/2022 12:01

Most people who are not struggling waste energy, I’ve just read on another forum of a Woman who has 12 airwick things plugged in and was surprised it costs £1 a day in electric 🙄
I know people who are currently putting their heating on if it goes a bit chilly in the evening instead of wearing a cardi, but leaving windows open ( my neighbour) , my living room is still above 21 degrees in the evening.

Antarcticant · 01/09/2022 12:02

“wear warm clothes in wintertime” trend, shut doors, buy draught excluders

It's been an eye-opener for me that some people apparently were not already doing this as a matter of course.

Bebbanburg2507 · 01/09/2022 12:03

I can't believe how many people still don't understand fixed tariffs a year into this energy crisis. I told me DH the other day I had decided to go with a fixed tariff and he said so we can use as much energy as we want then...argh no! And I had a flatmate years ago who refused to pay me her half of the bill because I had previously said the direct debit was £60 so refused to pay me anything extra... Even when I explained we used more than that she didn't get it.

Exactly! I think it must be a new concept to the members of the government who keep suggesting it though.

Like almost everybody in this country, I wear warm clothes in wintertime. and have been paying £100 a month variable the last few years when the price cap was hovering around £1100. My house is only 23 degrees in summertime.
Now the price cap is £3,549, in January it's expected to be £5,386, and then go up to about £7k in April. 9k in October. Quadrupling is happening irrespective of how many jumpers anyone wears.

Government? Do we actually have one? What have they said?

The point of your posts is very unclear but if what you are saying is someone should do something at a national level then yes.

On a personal level, wearing extra clothes in the house, and anything else we can do to keep out the cold, could be crucial to survival this winter.
