My energy bill will still quadruple even if I put a jumper on?

AIBU to think that even if I participate in this weird new “wear warm clothes in wintertime” trend, shut doors, buy draught excluders, buy Oodies, buy thermal curtains, and buy a £300 air fryer my energy bill will still quadruple.

Especially as most people wete already doing all or some of that.

Nothing short of turning the heating off is going to make much difference is it?

(Although of course I'm trying.)

After all, the money saving expert himself, Martin Lewis, says this isn’t something individuals can fix on their own , and it would be pretty arrogant to think I know better than him.

The "Put a jumper on" advice doesn't help British businesses at all does it?

What do you think?

I survived living in a house that only had a coal fire in one room. (sometimes we didnt even have coal for that and ended up burning anything we could find. This was in the 50s) We wore jumpers and thick clothes (not t shirts) in the winter. I didnt die of hypothermia despite the bedrooms being really freezing cold, with ice on the inside of the windows.

Pubs are defacing triple the bills they’re currently paying. This just can’t go on can it? We’re not taking about a few businesses here. We’re talking about millions of people who work in retail, leisure and hospitality.

Sporty2022 · 04/09/2022 17:51

Facing not defacing

Our local doesn't have its big Christmas fanfare out yet and I'm wondering if that's because they're wondering if they'll still be open.

Two babies in my husband's family did die of chest complaints in decades past. His mum is fanatical about keeping babies warm, and she goes berserk if anyone tries to light an open fire or a wood burner with a baby in the house.

Oh dear. Perhaps that original poster should be reminded that it’s 2022 and not the 50s.
The world relies on energy, so much more than it did 60 years ago.

Might be. Small businesses are now aaked deposits when tenewing fixes or getting new ones. Like x thousand. I know someone with small pizza shop who was asked for 8k otherwise the supplier wouldn't take them on. They don't usually have 8k lying around ..

No. Why?

There was a piece about how hard it was for women in the 1920s. Wonder if they are preparing us to go backwards😀

etulosba · 04/09/2022 20:25

I read somewhere that it will cost 88p to do 2 slices of toast??

Unlikely.

With the October cap, which I think is 52p a kW, it would cost 2.6p with 1000W toaster toasting for 3 minutes.

etulosba · 04/09/2022 20:32

That may be true. Nevertheless, the vast majority of us, millions , managed to get through childhood with no issues and are alive and well today.

Slowandwobbly · 04/09/2022 20:42

I'm interested to know what the effect of those of you who have opened up your ground floor, and no longer have rooms which you can shut the door on to try and save on heating costs.

My home isn't open plan and I'm thankful now. I feel the cold and used to like my home toasty warm. But since last winter, I've turned my thermostat down, the heating is on for only a short time when I get up and a few hours in the evening. If I feel cold when working at home or in evenings, I wrap my self in a heated throw, following the advice of heat the person not the room. It makes such a difference. I don't have the cold hands I used to have when in a room with minimal heating.

Also, lots of talk on how to economise on energy costs. Why are some just thinking of it in isolation? If you can't make any more savingson energy bills, what about making savings elsewhere if you can?

If you are a two car family, get rid of one. If you have one car only, get rid of it and get on the bus.

Cut down on or cut out holidays. Cut down on or stop smoking, drinking alcohol, takeaways etc.

We used to be able to have it all, but now as we are all finding out, we can't and serious choices have to be made.

VirginiaWool · 04/09/2022 21:15

Agree with some of that but house restructuring is expensive so probably not cost effective to go around putting up internal walls rn.

Also, I didn't have a car for many years. In London, that made sense. Now I live outside London and found that public transport was more expensive than owning a car. Yes, even accounting for insurance and maintenance etc. I bought a car in the end, not just for convenience but also to save money. A monthly bus ticket for me a few years ago was costing £65, for each DC it was another £36 and that literally just got us to school/work and back - lots of other journeys we had to use a different bus company for or, more likely, a taxi because the bus couldn't get us where we needed to go after work/school on time and then back home again. Any trips over and above eg to see family etc: again, more bus/train/taxi fares. I was spending insane amounts of money just doing quite basic journeys and lots and lots of time. Giving up your car altogether is a false economy if you're outside London or Manchester.

I have adequate radiators and aince it is relatively small space (or a standard if you think 40s terracs are a standard space) it's fien also 2 large windows and french door. I make aure no draught and glass isn't bringing cold in. Adequate radiators to a space make difference. Also proper placing like not behind a sofa or cupboard

Millions manage to get around while waiting for oranges and bananas, pre ordering jeans, waiting couple of months for them and new kitchen, every one, not just soecial months, why not.
Maybe we should just go back to that?

Let me just point out that whoever is trotting that shote about "we did fine you will be ok stop whining". You are the first generation which is not ensuring the next generation is doing better than them.

Kindly go fuck yourself with the ice on windows.
Signe everyone with iq over the room temperature in that times

This is not the first generation to go backwards - it is the first in 80 years yes but history hasn't been simple forward progress

Well the ones that got through are not the ones that were lost are they ? You've fine so you somehow thinks that the ones that didn't make it didn't matter ? Or ?

Wanting babies to be warm and away from smoke is not fanatical behaviour btw.

No, off course it's not, although some people seem to think it's fine to go back to those days. My mother in law's family have experienced what can happen

Or you should get a grip. The odd waft of smoke isn’t going to kill a baby.
