Inspired by a chat with a friend after struggling back from the corner shop yet again with the mountains of stuff my family can't survive without. My gran in the 70s used to have a little shopping trolley on wheels she'd take with her. You never see them anymore but what a brilliant idea. They sell them in Amazon, I'm going to buy one and be like my gran only without the curlers and housecoat 🤣
What else do you remember your DPs/DGPs use I can be inspired to invest in?

The tabard, apron and housecoat are wonderful things. I have a couple of pinnies but I feel like I want to expand my wardrobe now. I’m currently coveting a Japanese non tied version that looks as nice as a dress.

A pp mentioned cookers. What happened to all the stand alone cookers which had the grill at eye level? They were great for doing toast.

I don't know but I was just thinking I do miss an eye level grill!

Also my mum had an amazing whisk which had double beaters that spun when you turned a handle. I remember a lot Of blancmanges, table creams and Angel Delights. Perfect for these days when you want to whip up eggs but don’t want to waste energy either physically or via electric bills.

Speaking of blancmanges, did anyone else get wobbly jellies and blancmanges made in rabbit moulds? And those lovely frilly primary coloured paper dishes you got jelly and ice cream in at parties.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 01/09/2022 13:09

Now I’ve gone down a memory lane studded with Greene’s Creme Caramel which you made up with milk. I do love a good whisk up pudding.

Wildlynx · 01/09/2022 13:10

@Helenloveslee4eva my friend has one of these: Hydrogen car
There are only limited places to fill them in UK currently but friend says the current e vehicle push won't be sustained by the grid so expects H to end up being a growing option

I have my mum’s whisk like that and it’s the best kind there is!

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 01/09/2022 13:13

I also reckon foam curlers will come back in fashion. As will popping on a hairnet and nipping outside wearing a headscarf. I still remember girls in my class having their hair tied in actual bits of cloth overnight for ringlets for Sunday church services.

Also obviously they’ve just fallen out of fashion but I do love a scarf and will continue to look like a nineties pottery teacher till the day I can’t physically tie them on anymore.

Yes there was always a jelly in the shape of a rabbit at parties I went to in the 70,s and 80,s.

tonicwaters · 01/09/2022 13:16

Back to trolleys. I swear by my wheelie backpack folks! Hoist it on my shoulders when empty then fill yer boots in the shop and blithely wheel it home. It is black, discreet and I use it all the time. Holds a lot more than you would think! No need to find room for it in the actual supermarket trolley either, it's on my back.

Yes, we had a cat and a rabbit jelly mould.
Found the cat one in my mums cupboard a few years ago but it fell to bits when I tried to use it. I think maybe the plastic had degraded with age 😕

We stayed in a place this summer that had a carpet sweeper instead of a Hoover. Was fun to use but a bit of a pain to empty!

In terms of other inventions, why can’t you buy proper feather dusters on a stick anymore? My nan used to have two - they were great for getting to high-up cobwebs 🕸

You can. Mine came from The Range.

I wish they would bring back the alarm clocks that made a pot of tea.

Amazon. Argos.....

We always did blancmange rabbits on a bed of chopped up lime jelly "grass". And loved those little dishes. We had a local bakery that sold mini trifles in them.

They are called sholleys

Not all of them. Sholley is one manufacturer of them. Other shopping trolley brands are available. 🙄

Amazon: stainless Steel Rotary Hand Whip Whisk Egg Beater Mixer Cooking Tool Kitchen

We managed to buy a modern one before kids in some random shop ours was all metal - since kids it got squashed in the overflow utensil draw and clashes into each other when the handle turns - DH bought me an electric one instead.

As a children we loved this - Cheese Graters Slicer For Kitchen Handheld Stainless Steel with Handle Small Rotary Cutter Multi Purpose Machine We did manged to find one when our kids were young - again didn't survive the kids or our many house moves. It did avoid bloody fingers with cheese grating for a while.

MercurialMonday · 01/09/2022 13:39

We had a orange rabbit mould in house I grew up in and it turned out so did DH. DH found one in a charity shop and found some old style blancmange in packets.

Blancmange was more faff than angles delight but apparently better for packed lunches for a while - the mould was bloody awful never came out in one piece - which is what I remember about my childhood as well.

I was about to say the removable cuffs and collars which sound ingenious for small boys in particular. Would the shirt not get a bit smelly for adult men though?

I’ve had a shopping trolley for 15 years! Since my 30s living in a city close to lots of food shops.

My vote is for proper mangles. I don’t have one of those but grandma kept hers until she had to leave her house in the early 90s. It was massive, which does mean it takes up space, but things came out almost dry and in the hands of a skilful user you can eliminate or minimise most ironing. Perfect for a damp climate or rising energy costs as it reduces drying time enormously.

A mangle! My nan had one for donkey's years. Lost to the rag and bone man when she died (grrr!)

Yeah, but back in the day it was socially acceptable to be a little bit smelly and dirty

I suppose most people have oven chips now, but my mum had a great chipper that you put a whole spud in, pressed the handle down and evenly sized chips chips came out.

And of course, a chip pan, full of solidified lard. Those were proper chips!😋

Yes! The basket firmly lodged in the lard or dripping!

You and your trebuchets - it's only a trebuchet if it comes from the Trebuchet region of France - otherwise it's just a sparkling catapult.

🤣
