Inspired by a chat with a friend after struggling back from the corner shop yet again with the mountains of stuff my family can't survive without. My gran in the 70s used to have a little shopping trolley on wheels she'd take with her. You never see them anymore but what a brilliant idea. They sell them in Amazon, I'm going to buy one and be like my gran only without the curlers and housecoat 🤣
What else do you remember your DPs/DGPs use I can be inspired to invest in?

I can't believe people still use them and this has passed me by 🤷 @Helenloveslee4eva I'm still waiting for the hoverboard from BTTF 😭

They’re every where if you live in non posh places as people don’t have cars to run 10 mins to supermarket . If you walk to shops or take a bus it’s a no brainer.

Even in my posh ish area you see them lads, but mostly during the day as the pensioners are out in force using their free bus passes and saving the planet.

Salad spinner - only way to get lettuce dry. Fond memories of using that in my childhood

You can get these. I have my replacement one I bought about 3 years ago….just buy one fgs

Give it a few months and you'll be able to carry £60-worth no problem.

😂😬 Yeah! Coz pretty soon, £60 will very likely only buy 2 cartons of milk, a loaf of bread, 3 cans of soup, and a four pack of baked beans!!! Shock

I agree about the housecoats! My grandmother always wore them and they were great. As it is I just use aprons (I have masses of aprons) when gardening/cooking/cleaning/washing up.

Clothes pulleys.

I know you can still get these, but in my grandparent's days every council flat round about them had one. They were massive and held loads of washing. Just so practical, especially in the high ceiling tenements where they lived, keeping the washing up and out of the way on those dreich rainy days that you couldn't hang it up outside, much better than clothes horses/airers that take up so much floorspace.

As a child I used to love getting to pull (hoist?) the pulley up and down. 😄

It’s called aYorkshire Dollyin my parts up north. You can get them, still. I have one in my utility room . You need a strong ceiling or knowing where joist are.
tumble driers took over
also they creat3d damp issue if not used in ventilated room. In the days before central heating they were in kitchens near the stove as the 9f ly way to dry washing on wet days. Still made kitchens damp.

I leave window open in utility room when using .

Spanielsarepainless · 01/09/2022 11:37

A mangle. Staying with my grandmother once, she folded clean, wet bed linen, passed it through the mangle, pegged it on the washing line to dry, and it didn't need ironing when she got it in. Smooth, folded, smelling of the sun and the breeze.

In terms of other inventions, why can’t you buy proper feather dusters on a stick anymore? My nan used to have two - they were great for getting to high-up cobwebs 🕸

Cos they’ve been replaced with more hygienic and efficient micro fibre ones- I have one. You can detach the head and bung in washing machine. Couldn’t do that with real feathers.

and thankfully people aren’t allowed to hunt birds on large scale for the soft downy feathers that were used. We now think not killiing birds to get feathers for pillows and dusters is a good thing.

🤣🤣

What about the housecoat? Put it on over your clothes when doing cooking, cleaning, to prolong the time your clothes go between washes.
Basically the nanas know what they're doing!

I use my old lab coats I had early in my career nearly 35 years ago. They even have my name nicely embroidered onto front to remind me if I develop dementia.
in truth I just put over my bra and pants for house cleaning…get too sweaty for anything underneath

BuildersTeaMaker · 01/09/2022 11:51

We had a cooker in 1970-80s …all in one gas oven and hob type.
one of the rings had a thermostat control…I have absolutely no idea how it worked. It was designed to help prevent things like chip pan fires as would control temperature of fat once it got heated.

never seen them since - I’m guess whatever magic it used to do that sometimes failed and they were discontinued 🤷🏼‍♀️

my mums was still in kitchen when house was sold in year 2000.

ShinyPikachu · 01/09/2022 11:59

I have both a little shopping trolley and a salad spinner. Grin

I need to get a new one of those mechanical chip cutters. DM's one is older than I am and still solid. I bought one a couple of years ago from Avon and I broke it after only a few uses and haven't got around to replacing it yet but there are loads of different ones online. I still regret not buying one the same as DM's when I saw it in a charity shop.

I have one, it's invaluable
Does anyone have one of those manual carpet sweepers? Ewbank were they called?

There's one in the garage at the moment, it came from my late MIL's house and my OH was reluctant to get rid of a lot of things. It is indeed a Eubank, I intend taking up to the living museum place and see if they want it!

Handy for parking wars I would imagine!

How about that common companion of the shopping trolley, the rain mate?

Handy portable, packable solution to getting your hair wet on the rain.

There a shop in our little town which sells the most amazing selection of stuff, I always say If they don't have it, no-one does. Not seen rainmates though but they have stuff like bra extenders!

But are you all pronouncing it correctly or are we back to the panini wars?

I suppose most people have oven chips now, but my mum had a great chipper that you put a whole spud in, pressed the handle down and evenly sized chips chips came out.

And of course, a chip pan, full of solidified lard. Those were proper chips!😋

Reminds me of summer holidays, my mother worked in a confectioners where they made their own pies. My job was to load half a sack of potatoes into what was like a huge centrifuge with rough interior sides, this skinned the potatoes, I then had to go through all of the potatoes cutting out the 'eyes', I was also allowed to block the pie tins, that involved putting a lump of pastry into the tin and pulling down a handle that then shaped it intot he tin!

I'm never quite sure about a house coat ,my Grandma called her dressing gown her house coat ,but she did wear a gingham full length jacket over her clothes when she was baking or cleaning ,the type dinner ladies of the 70,s and 80,s wore .

MissFritton65 · 01/09/2022 12:41

@scottishthistle77 I've recently had an extension which included a utility room with a "dolly maiden", it's fantastic for drying my washing out of the way. We have high ceilings and the washing dries in a matter of hours!

Tax disc holders!

Not sure that could be classed as a genius invention!

x2boys · 01/09/2022 12:47

Ice magic the chocolate sauce that hardened when put on ice cream, there was something similar a few years back but not as good.

Bought some of this stuff last week in Tesco, now called Askeys Chocolate Crackin or something similar. Tastes like utter shite, greasy, takes ages to get hard and is nothing like the superior Ice Magic Sad

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 01/09/2022 13:02

The tabard, apron and housecoat are wonderful things. I have a couple of pinnies but I feel like I want to expand my wardrobe now. I’m currently coveting a Japanese non tied version that looks as nice as a dress.

A pp mentioned cookers. What happened to all the stand alone cookers which had the grill at eye level? They were great for doing toast.

I was looking on jacamo for some men's shoes and was absolutely shocked to see they had a tech section with ELECTRIC MOTOR SHOPPING TROLLEYS!!!

I was shocked that I'd never seen them, then I saw the price and thought ahh that makes sense.
