Cost of Living Support payment

I received £326 into my bank this morning from HMRC COLS… No idea what that means so I googled it and it’s a cost of living support payment.

Im a bit confused about why I’ve received it though as I’m a high rate tax payer so my income doesn’t allow for any means tested benefits!
I’ve read the criteria and don’t qualify for it from what I can see. Maybe I’m wrong? If anyone has any ideas please let me know…

AIBU to be worried about spending it? Should I contact HMRC to give it back?

I hope you get to keep it. Nice to hear of a higher rate tax payer getting something for a change. We get nothing, not even child benefit.

Why should a higher rate tax payer get something just for the sake of it?
The people who receive the £326.00 are on low incomes, which you are not. So therefore it’s not for you.

Naji · 02/09/2022 09:53

What a bunch of incredibly judgemental, narcissistic and unforgiving people replying to this thread. Someone comes on here to ask a genuine question and you all jump down her throat! Shame! What's the point of having a motherhood community??

Motto should be "if you don't have anything good to say then shut up".

I received the HMRC cols payment today but I didn't qualify for tax credits this year - guess HMRC must be making mistakes all over!

@EllaVoday if you're in doubt then contact HMRC Hun, don't waste your time on here.

Again, just because someone is a higher rate tax payer doesn’t mean they aren’t eligible, there are higher rate tax payers in receipt of UC or tax credits. Talking in general not about OP specifically.

What do you mean you get nothing? You get a higher salary

I can see mine, HSBC. And we're def entitled, unless someone wants to care for my disabled DS so I can get a job that means we out earn tax credits.

Not sure why your so snippy I got mine today I'm also the carer of my disabled child ,who gets DLA at the highest rates and tax credits for ,it was in reference to the Op who shouldn't be getting it.

Then you would see Glitterbomber is the OP not EllaVoday who posted a deliberately goady comment about higher earners geting no extra financial support from the goverment. Believe me when I say no one wants to need government top ups.

I didn’t know that. Not sure how that works as I thought a higher rate tax payer would rightly be out of the threshold for claiming.

Anyway, the positive with that then is that some people on higher incomes will finally be able to stfu about how they never get anything.
But then again they must be receiving something (UC or CB) if they’re entitled to the £326. So when they say they never get anything they’re obviously talking rubbish.

They didn't come back to their other post either.

Dump and ran

funinthesun19 · 02/09/2022 10:24

Sorry not CB
UC or TC

Legofigure · 02/09/2022 10:35

No, plenty of higher rate tax payers are under the threshold especially if they rent &/or have disabled DC &/or childcare costs, and the government rightly think their income is low enough in the context of their circumstances to be eligible.

funinthesun19 · 02/09/2022 10:40

Like I said, hopefully they will be able to stop complaining about how they “never get anything” then.

Legofigure · 02/09/2022 10:43

Hmm Pretty sure they aren’t the same posters, as otherwise they wouldn’t be complaining they didn’t receive anything if they did receive benefits, would they?

funinthesun19 · 02/09/2022 10:46

Well exactly and I pointed that out before. Someone upthread was complaining how she never gets anything.
But if she is claiming the required benefits to receive the cost of living payment then she is receiving something isn’t she?

If she’s not receiving those required benefits then she’s earning too much therefore she doesn’t get anything, cost of living payment included.

funinthesun19 · 02/09/2022 10:47

If all that makes sense…

Well yes, but just because they are a higher rate tax payer doesn’t mean they aren’t eligible for UC or TC, and thus the COL payments.

funinthesun19 · 02/09/2022 10:54

Great, so no need for them to complain about never getting anything then as per poster upthread.

Legofigure · 02/09/2022 11:44

As I said, I don’t think the ones complaining are the same ones who are receiving benefits because if they did receive benefits and thus the COL payments they wouldn’t be complaining they never receive anything.

Blimey the bitchiness, resentment and jealously on this post it laughable

Hope you get to keep the money

Well you should get child benefit as everyone with a child under 16 is entitled to that regardless of how much they earn.

mattressspring · 02/09/2022 19:15

That's not true at all and hasn't been for some time now.

No they are not it changed quite a few years ago now, I think it starts being reduced at £50,000 stops when someone earns £60 ,
000 There is an anomaly though where tow parents can earn £49,000 each and still get it ,I may have some figures wrong, but certainly not everyone gets it.

mattressspring · 02/09/2022 19:20

It changed in January 2013, so almost 10 years ago!!
