To say DS won't comply with school uniform?

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 08:55

For context, school has been terrible about communication so far - not responding to any emails, cancelling a registration day only an hour in advance, etc.

I checked the uniform policy - nothing on website. On the uniform retailer page, there were guidelines, but nothing about boys' trousers and nothing for sale, so I figured there were no restrictions. I bought DS some plain trousers over the summer.

It's now about a week before school starts and a school Whatsapp has been set up. I asked about the uniform just to make sure and a parent with a child already enrolled has replied saying they're only allowed to wear grey uniform trousers from Next or M&S.

It’s too late to return what I bought and I don’t have the funds to buy all new clothes simply because school didn’t bother to tell parents the uniform.

AIBU to send him in in what I bought because there is no information stating differently?

Our Lidl still had some grey school trousers this week for about £2. Worth a look if have one (or an Aldi) nearby.

@mattressspring

Grown women being so annoyed at the idea of a child not conforming and being exactly the same as every otjer child is whats pathetic.

As I said, no wonder bullying is rife.

Urgh. Deliberately putting your child is blue trousers when the uniform is grey is fucking stupid. Poor kid. I take it you have never been that kid? The one whose mother decided to take a stand whilst making them a target? Fuck that.

LobeliaBaggins · 31/08/2022 11:51

This is really not the hill you want to die on, trust me. Saying this as a foreigner unfamiliar with the UK system too.

mandolinwind · 31/08/2022 11:54

My local state comprehensive does stipulate which retailers trousers and shirts should be purchased from:

"The uniform is a non-negotiable requirement of all students in Years 7 – 11."

"Students must wear blue and white striped shirts as supplied by Sportswear International as the only acceptable shirts."

"The only acceptable long trousers to be worn to school are those provided by Sportswear International (SWI) via the school website, [redacted name of local supplier] or Marks and Spencer. Short tailored trousers available from Marks and Spencer online may also be worn. No other trousers will be permitted.

"The only acceptable skirts are grey ‘pleated skirts’ from [redacted name of local supplier], grey drop-waist pleated skirts from Marks and Spencer or ‘straight skirts’ available from The School Uniform Shop (online) or SWI. No other skirts will be permitted."

"BLAZER Navy blue tailored blazer with school [redacted] logo on the breast
pocket."

Twenty years ago, blazers were not compulsory but crewneck tops with the school house colours logo printed on them, which were only available to order via the PTA uniform shop, were required.

It is a racket - it generates funds for the schools' PTA.

Items of uniform should be purchasable from any retailer so long as they comply with requirements for colour, style, length etc. House colours could still be provided as enamel badges, as they were years ago.

We don't even have an M & S in this part of the county, anymore - closed down last year - so no chance to try on for a good fit before you order online.

Summerofcontent · 31/08/2022 11:55

I didn't think uniform was compulsory in primary🤷🏻

Topgub · 31/08/2022 11:57

Making them a target for what?!

Why do 4 yo kids all have to be the same?

What 4 yo is even going to fucking notice another kid has blue or black trousers and grey?

I can guarantee they would only ne a target because women like you would make them 1

Its not kids who bully, it's adults and they're ridiculous expectations they pass on to their kids.

Trying to raise your kids to be self confident and believe in themselves and be true to themselves is a fucking nightmare when you're up against patheticness like giving a shit what colour trousers you wear.

@mandolinwind

Fuck that shit.

No way would I comply with that

newbiename · 31/08/2022 11:58

You should say the school name. Not outing unless your child is the only one going there.
Prove some if these PPs wrong who are convinced you didn't look properly .

I'm talking about the poster who is pissed off the op has bought the wrong colour trousers and us accusing them of making the child a target

Along with several other comments along the same lines.

This school is very likely to be in breach of the new statutory guidance on school uniforms from the DfE and I'd strongly encourage you to point this out to the governing body.

What are YOU talking about??

it's the summer break between school YEARS, not bloody half term, which, unsurprisingly, just as it sounds, is in the middle of a term! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Exactly - errr half term, the clue is in the name. Mind you, the poster has written ‘could of went’ which just about sums it up. Oh dear.

But its a very valid point, why would you want your child just starting school to be the odd one out to the rest of the children who's parents have been bothered to source the correct uniform?

Are you suggesting children don't get bullied for being different?

mattressspring · 31/08/2022 12:08

The 'women like you' comment made to me was a million times worse then me suggesting OP simply gets grey trousers. That was targeted. Kind of makes anything said but that poster rather invalid.

Peachi82 · 31/08/2022 12:08

I feel you... My child is starting reception and despite having all the information from the school and from their website I really struggled to get it all in order and ready. It is so annoying as I have spent more time and money and visited more shops than I would usually for children's clothes (usually bought second hand or as and when needed from the supermarket). The most pain were the royal blue PE shorts that I could not find anywhere and had to order online. Navy, black, no problem; but couldn't find royal blue anywhere.

The quality of some of the stuff is appalling, especially the logo'ed school jumpers are mostly synthetic material, which I usually would never buy.

Without reading parts of this thread I wouldn't know that grey is the default colour for primary uniform. I never noticed.

ThirteenLuckyForSome · 31/08/2022 12:08

I fail to understand how you have bought the complete wrong colour of trousers. You bought 2 colours anyway so must have known at least 1 was the wrong colour if not both? If I go onto our school website or twitter I can see exactly what colour every child is wearing, there are pictures on the home page, plus there is an entire section on uniform about what to buy. If you were unsure why didn't you check before they broke up for summer? Seems a lack of organisation and common sense on your part to be honest.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 12:08

@ZeroFuchsGiven

We've no idea if the op can afford to buy new trousers. She has trousers already that are fit for purpose.

She shouldn't have to replace them cause some adults can't cope with not everyone being the same

@mattressspring

Quite the opposite

They do and it's the bullys parents fault.

Brigante9 · 31/08/2022 12:09

Yabu to think there were no restrictions. Buying blue trousers is a bit OTT. Surely you visited the school before enrolling your ds so you saw the uniform irl?

mattressspring · 31/08/2022 12:10

@Topgub

I don't know what your problem is but I suggest you seek some help for it. Making an example of a child to prove a point is disgusting.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 12:10

@mattressspring

How else could I express it? It beliefs like yours that cause the problems.

gatehouseoffleet · 31/08/2022 12:12

vivainsomnia · 31/08/2022 08:59

This can't be right. The whole point of uniforms is that they are not distinctive and commercially branded. Why would they insist on only two shops. Ridiculous!

Loads of schools insist on specified items from one shop.

But nobody is going to be able to tell the difference between M&S trousers and Asda trousers and I would tell any school to get stuffed who tried to impose those sorts of silly rules.

If they are the wrong colour though, you'll have to exchange them.

Nice ideals but your living in cloud cuckoo land. An angry cloud cuckoo land going by the number of expletives you’ve used.

29 kids wearing grey trousers / skirts and one wearing another colour. Yes ok, that’s not going to stand out at all is it? It’s human nature to want to fit in. It’s built into almost every one of us because evolution has made us that way. Fit in or get rejected and pushed out of the group. So much of our actions today are based on our history. It’s actually fascinating reading about it because it explains so much.
