Do you use one and if not, can I ask why?

I am interested in the rough proportion of people in the UK who use an electric toothbrush - no idea why - its just something I pondered upon whilst brushing my teeth. I use an electric, but haven't always - started around 3 years ago, and haven't looked back since. My teeth feel so much cleaner, and its easier too.

I cannot really see why someone wouldn't use one, outside from the expense, which I do understand would be prohibitive for many.

AIBU to ask: do you use an electric toothbrush, and if you don't then what is the reason for that?

it gives me a headache.

Mannymoomin · 29/08/2022 08:20

@Branster i use foreo.
A little bit pricey, but judging by how often everyone is charging, I’ve probably saved more in electricity by never needing to charge it!
I do love it though, and it’s so hygienic, no chance of it getting all disgusting!
I’ve decided that all 3 of my dc will be getting one for Xmas!

Very useful, thank you.
I have two other Foreo 'gadgets' and they very, very rarely need charging so it's useful to know the same applies to their toothbrush.
Is it as noisy as a normal electric toothbrush? Or just the quiet humming noise from vibrating?
And does it reach all the way between teeth, or rather, where teeth meet at the edges? I floss but I also rely on bristles to clean those areas.

Frazzled2207 · 29/08/2022 08:27

Used one for years and they def are better. But it’s hassle keeping them charged (have more than enough things that need charging) and can be awkward getting the right heads to replace

now use an old fashioned brush

LynneBenfield · 29/08/2022 08:32

According to my dental hygienist, technique is more important than tool but most people don’t have great technique and so the sonic type toothbrushes help to compensate.

gamerchick · 29/08/2022 08:34

I don't like the feel of them in my mouth.

tuesday2am · 29/08/2022 08:35

I’ve used one for years and do love it, but admittedly when the batteries run out, it takes me ages to replace them and I tend to use a normal one in the interim. Wish the batteries lasted longer.

Bought DP one. He’s used it very irregularly, says he prefers a normal one.

PotatoHammock · 29/08/2022 08:36

I hate the noise and the feeling of the vibrations in my hands. When I realised that I was having to psych myself up to brush my teeth I switched back, and now I don't dread brushing my teeth any more!

KimberleyClark · 29/08/2022 08:37

Yes I use one and have done for 20 years. I have good oral health, never had a root canal or an abscess.

I also have the Luna fofo and the Luna 3
Ive just checked to compare.
the foreo has exactly the same level of noise as the fofo. But not quite as much as the Luna 3.
if you have any of them gadgets you can probably compare.
before the foreo I used an oral b electric, when I changed, both my orthodontist (braces here) and dentist asked if I had changed my routine.
the tongue adapter is great too, doesn’t make me gag like the usual way of tongue cleaning does.
I do use a water flosser too, but I certainly think the foreo does a brill job of cleaning around and in between.
I definitely wouldn’t ever go back to an ordinary electric toothbrush.
Another plus is the usb plug, no arguing over shaving adapter which were always in short supply and in use in my house!

ThrallsWife · 29/08/2022 08:44

I used to use a fairly expensive Oral-B for a long while. Electrical charger (never an issue) at a cost outlay of £27 initially and then quite a hefty one per set of heads. Until they started changing the head fitting so frequently that I was spending more on replacing both brush and heads than I would have been on manual and I resented the waste and loss of money when there was nothing wrong with the actual brush.

I have since compromised on semi-electrics, provided I can change the battery.

Dentist is happy enough.

butterflied · 29/08/2022 08:47

I don't like the vibrations. Electric toothbrushes are also expensive (to me). My dentist is happy with my teeth, so I'll carry on as I am.

DysmalRadius · 29/08/2022 08:49

I use a manual one on the advice of my dentist who reckons that the benefits of electric ones are overstated and that technique and frequency are more important than the type of brush. I can well believe that its more a matter of personal preference rather than one being objectively better than the other.

georgarina · 29/08/2022 08:49

I use one. Less effort (especially when diagnosed with ME) and it gets my teeth cleaner.

OldTinHat · 29/08/2022 08:50

Yep. Not expensive, about £15 in the sale. You can bulk buy replacement heads from Groupon or Wowcher. The charge lasts ages.

I've used an electric one for a good 20 odd years and only recently (past three months) had to replace the first one because it stopped charging.

Because I use bamboo toothbrushes instead of plastic ! Is there any environmentally friendly electric heads that are compostable ???

Fairislefandango · 29/08/2022 08:52

I don't like them, the heads are expensive and charging it is annoying as I don't have a socket in the bathroom. I had one, but I didn't find my teeth looked or felt any cleaner, so when it died I went back to normal ones.

SiobhanSharpe · 29/08/2022 08:56

I like my battery operated oral B , they're less than a tenner and seem to last for a couple of years.
I use the TeePee interdental brushes but I'm also thinking about a battery operated water flosser.
Dentist is happy with my brushing so far.

catfunk · 29/08/2022 09:08

Yes I've been using one for 20+ years.
I have misophonia so find using manual toothbrushes extremely difficult.

My hygienist always comments on the cleanliness of my teeth.
Re plastic use - obviously they're plastic yes but apart from a replacement brush head every now and then, the bodies last me 8+ years.

unicormb · 29/08/2022 09:11

Couldn't be without mine, two full minutes morning and night and my teeth are squeaky clean.

I bought my DH one a year ago, his teeth were grim from nicotine and booze (which he's now quit). They were giving me the ick. They look absolutely fab now, and he's a lazy arse!

Pretty sure dental equipment used to fix teeth of people who don't brush properly has a worse carbon footprint.

unicormb · 29/08/2022 09:18

Just checked out the Foreo, it looks like a vibrator! 😳

LynneBenfield · 29/08/2022 09:19

I’m not convinced by the silicone bristles on the foreo.

oviraptor21 · 29/08/2022 09:21

BananaBender · 29/08/2022 05:24

Oh that sounds annoying. Pretty standard here to have at least one powerpoint in the bathroom for hairdryers, electric shavers, etc. New builds have multiple powerpoints in the bathrooms.

It's pretty standard in the UK too!
Not for hairdryers I don't think - they all need a 3-pin plug, but razors and electric toothbrushes use a 2-pin plug.

😂🤣😂🤣

now you say it, the whole thing vibrates rather than just the head

Mannymoomin · 29/08/2022 09:23

And in true MN style, this thread is being derailed… from toothbrushes to dildos 😂
